Last year, I spent a lot of time questioning my decision to pursue art. It felt silly given the state of the world to pursue creativity over more utilitarian paths. I felt selfish and useless to what the world needed.

When my friend and fellow artist Henna Aslam passed, my relationship with art was fragile and my commitment to it wavered heavily. I somehow felt the most pressure to create and the least willing to that I had ever. One day, I opened a zine from ZAHA — an art collective co-founded by Henna — and read a poem called prayer from the heart (of empire) by Kenia Hale. The words comforted me while I completed my final art projects last semester.

There is a helplessness felt amongst conscious minds on how to continue everyday with an acknowledgment of the crimes our governments commit and uphold. Within this helplessness, sometimes we create. I wanted to recognize art in protest and the historically powerful role it plays in healing. I wanted to shed light on the restorative nature of everyday protest, small acts of defiance, resistance in the mundane. The things we do at a smaller scale that feel futile in the face of larger global forces, but continue to do nevertheless. I wanted to talk about the importance of response; not as an engine to provoke change but as a documentation of the way humanity survived in the face of genocide. To show that the people cared, to prove that they stood for justice.

STEREOTOMY explores themes of community, resistance, grief, hope and what it means to build. It is a counter-response towards the feeling that what we do is ineffectual and pointless. The show title comes from the architectural practice of stereotomy: the art of cutting stones so they can be assembled into a larger configuration.

A huge thank you to my co-collaborators Skye Jung and Brenna Hasselmann; sincerely the best team I could have asked for. Thank you to everyone who came together to help make this happen, I am so deeply grateful.

Henna and I had planned to do a co-curate together Fall 2025. This gallery show is not without her recognizable initiative, passion, and drive. 💗💗💗💗
