Engelstalige boekhandels zitten in de lift: zowel De Slegte in Antwerpen als de Brusselse boekhandel Passa Porta wijdt er een volledige winkel aan, en de Britse keten Waterstones opent een tweede vestiging in Brussel. Ook Franstalige lezers gaan steeds meer overstag.⁠

🚨 OUR SHOPS WILL BE CLOSED MONDAY 10TH OF AUGUST 🚨

Did you know you can do an inventory on any day of the year? We like to count our stock in the middle of summer, chasing up and down ladders in our flip-flops and shorts.

This means two things: afterwards we’ll be even more accurate handing out reading tips live and online AND you’ll need to do your bookshopping this weekend or after Monday.

Be advised: both shops will be closed Monday August 10th. No telephones or mails will be answered.

Well, this is one for the books!

We’ve been named as one of six revolutionary bookshops in the world by Vogue Italia! Is this real or are we suffering a sunstroke? Other shops include Livreria Lello in Porto, where Dua Lippa just opened The Manifesto Library and Soda Books in Berlin.

“Brussels and the Power of Translation

There is another form of cultural resistance, often less visible but equally fundamental: translation. The Passa Porta bookstore, in the heart of Brussels, has built its identity around this idea. More than just a bookstore, it is an international center dedicated to literature and the encounter between different languages, cultures, and imaginations. In a city that symbolically represents contemporary Europe, Passa Porta celebrates the value of cultural contamination. Books cross geographical and linguistic borders, generating new meanings each time they are translated, read, or reinterpreted. The choice to give centrality to international literatures seems particularly significant in a context marked by rising nationalism and new forms of closed identities. Translation thus becomes much more than a linguistic exercise. It is an act of cultural mediation. A gesture that allows ideas to travel and differences to dialogue. Here too, the library emerges as a space of resistance. Not against something, but in favor of complexity.”

🌞 Zomertips! 🌞

Nu de traditionele Grote Vakantie van start gaat, overstelpen onze boekhandelaren jullie graag met boekentips voor in de hangmat of bij het zwembad. De eerste aanbevelingen komen van Steven, daags voor zijn vertrek naar de heuvels van Lazio.

📕 Als u dit jaar één roman leest laat het het dan Corpus Britney zijn. De trippy, trashy, marxistische debuutroman van Dominique De Groen die straks minstens één grote prijs kaapt.

📕 Kornel Filipowicz had, dixit zijn vriendin Wislawa Szymborska, de Nobelprijs moeten winnen. Op basis van de kleine roman Memoir van een antiheld, een studie naar lafheid, collaboratie en heldendom, ben ik geneigd haar gelijk te geven.

📕 Zin in een meeslepend verhaal over liefde, vriendschap en kunst? De nieuwe van Dave Eggers, Contrapposto, voldoet aan al deze wensen en meer.

📕 Eén van de twee nagelnieuwe boeken die ik zelf in de koffer pak is Long Wave van Daisy Johnson. Over zorg en moederschap, en dat -zo hoop ik- doorspekt met haar aan mythes ontleende stijl.

📕 Dooneen van Ridgway wordt omschreven als Beckettiaans. Vreemd, want als ik de eerste pagina’s lees valt net het bedwelmende Proustiaanse ritme op. Kan niet wachten om straks in Rome over Dublin te lezen.

🏠 🖊️ The resident’s choice 🖊️ 🏠

This past month we had the joyful company of Scottish writer Tom Newlands. He stayed at the Passa Porta residency to work on his third novel. His second novel -Something like happiness- is out this August. Can’t wait? Go read the tremendously funny and moving Only here, only now. His neurodivergent coming-of-age debut novel. Having lived above our bookshop these past few weeks, these are Tom’s book recommendations.

📕 Fat city by Leonard Gardner: The lives of those on the margins have never been more beautifully observed than in Fat City.

📕 Gloria Don’t Speak by Lucy Apps: the story of a young girl in London living with a learning disability. It is a window on a life rarely found in literature.

📕 The Bandini Quartet by John Fante: he inspired me to become a writer. There is an abundance of life in these four books.

Thanks Tom! Hope to welcome you in Brussels again in the not too distant future!
