Hala Alyan spotted in Paris

Poet and clinical psychologist @hala.n.alyan has a peripatetic soul — growing up, she moved frequently, living in several countries and many U.S. states, before settling in New York in her early twenties. Now, she lives in Williamsburg, and when she’s not writing or teaching at NYU, her favorite thing to do is wander around the city, often with her four-year-old daughter, Leila, in tow. In early July, we caught up with Hala while she was in Paris teaching at NYU’s campus in the city. We chatted about writing an accidental memoir, finding music to cry to, eating lemons in the bath, and more.

Shannen, spotted in Parc des Buttes-Chaumont.

We spotted Shannen lounging in the park with her friends on a piece of Barbet de Jouy fabric. We noticed her as she performed an incantation to scare away the gnats swarming around people’s heads. Shannen spoke with us about how The Color Purple led to what she calls her “intimate revolution” and inspired her to become an actress; her passion for social causes; and her formative travels through southern India.

Revisit our interview with the postal worker who grew up in South Carolina with her single mother. After having two kids of her own shortly after high school, she moved back to New York to take advantage of her familial support system in the city and leave behind memories of a destructive relationship. In this conversation, DeNeita talked to us about early motherhood, the physical ramifications of her job, and how her fashion sense has evolved over the years.
