Whānau
(family)

This was planned to be the last post of my NZ photo collections. Whānau is such a strong word, such a feeling of connection to people that you just met but just became part of your family on this journey. Wasn’t quite sure what pictures to put into this post really. There is way too much of them and probably lots of that I just keep for my personal camera roll. But yeah that’s a wrap up on NZ (for now).

Haere rā, Aotearoa. Haere rā e te whānau, ka maumahara tonu au ki a koutou 🌀

1. Eating food leftovers of Copperbeech-Party
2. Playing piano in the shed of the Copperbeech hostel (Nelson)

Manapouri

The circle track was a true hidden gem. Two hiking days, did it in the winter, there was no water taxi to cross the river so I had to use my SUP to paddle over the freezing water and hide it in the bush for the days. But so I was the only human there. Wandering trough beautiful Fiordland, along beaches, being followed by Pīwakawaka (fantails), sleeping in an empty hut while possums were running over the roof. Pathfindig was terrible, had to follow the orange triangles trough the dense muddy bush, sometimes there were old landslides so no triangles, had to do pathfinding even in the darkness of the night. All in all it was amazing!!

1. Gotta always look for those triangles
2. Sunny lake beaches in the winter with only animal footprints
3. Muddy Fiordland
4. Funny bridges
5. Can you see the branched eye? 👁️‍🗨️
6. Track vibes
7. Inflating my SUP to bring me over Waiau river taken in Lake Manapouri by @pataljonja

Rakiura
(Stewart Island)

Being on the island that is more southern than the South Island and probably the most southern (inhabited) island of NZ is absolutely crazy. Never been that far south ... It was surprisingly warmer than on the South Island. My highlight was defo seeing a southern tokoeka (kiwibird) in the wild during a peaceful full-moon hike.

1. The neighbourhood-streets of Oban
2. Taking the ferry from Bluff to Oban trough the Foveaux-Strait
3. The coastline felt like summer (it was winter)
4. Sandy lagoon
5. An log hauler machine from the last century in the middle of the bush
6. Sandy wharf
7. A typical stewart islander’s property entry taken in Stewart Island / Rakiura by @pataljonja

Moana
(Ocean, Sea, Large Body of Water)

Aotearoa is completely surrounded by the ocean. You feel the Pacific lifestyle and the vibes. You also sense the raw power and strength of the water. It dominates the lives of so many species. Looking out into the endless sea, you realise that water rules our planet. It keeps Aotearoa separated from the rest of the world, making it unique. It tells stories, it gives, and it takes. I’ve always loved watching the horizon over the water and letting go of everything.

1. A seal that probably doesn’t want to be disturbed on the East Coast of the South Island
2. Split Apple Rock, photo taken with Alonso’s phone
3. Long exposure shot in Abel Tasman National Park shot by Alonso
4. Two fishermen in Jackson Bay, the last point where you can drive along the West Coast of the South Island
5. Another kayaking photo with Ruben and Louisa, plus someone else that is still preparing for his next chapter …
6. A sea cave in Coromandel
7. & 8. Rafting the highest commercially rafted waterfall at Kaituna Cascades, Rotorua (7m)
9. Paddling to Ruby Island on Lake Wanaka with Flo
10. Nissan Atlas at Jackson Bay
11. Kayaking near Mosquito Bay Campsite
12. Walking up after sliding down the Rere Rockslides
13. An empty beach all to myself at sunset on the West Coast

Piopiotahi
(Milford Sound)

Sounds like „pio! pio! tahi“
or like 🔫🔫 tahi

Of course, I had to visit the famous Milford Sound! It’s incredibly beautiful but also very touristy (by NZ standards). I’m a tourist too, after all. These places are what make the country internationally known. I heard the Doubtful Sound cruise is even more stunning but also way more expensive, so I chose the classic Milford Sound cruise instead. Since it was winter, I feel the scenery was even more magical. Milford Sound is one of those rare places where you actually hope for rain to see all the waterfalls – and guess who didn’t have rain on their cruise?

1. Which side is reality, which side is mirrored?
2. Traffic before Homer Tunnel
3. The classic Milford Sound shot
4. Ship cruise through Milford Sound
5. Everyone trying to get the best photo
6. Beautiful Milford Road
7. Stunning Lake Marian – didn’t take a swim, tho taken in Milford Sound by @pataljonja

Takutai
(Coast)

In Aotearoa, you have coast everywhere, you never have to go far to hear the sound of the Pacific and enjoy the scenic views of the coast. Especially when I left the cold mountains at the end of autumn, the coast brought me sunshine and fresh sea air.

1. Me rolling around Wharariki Beach (The Windows Beach)
2. The classic photo angle at Cathedral Cove
3. Sunny beach at Abel Tasman during winter (it was totally warm here)
4. Nugget Point view at the coast
5. A guy taking a photograph of the rocks in the sea called „The Nuggets“
6. Cloudy view at Slope Point, the southernmost point on the South Island
7. Spending my last weekend in NZ at Piha Beach with Mattes, Leon & Anna
8. Big waves in Greymouth
9. Kayaking with Ruben and Louisa
10. The big empty beach at Farewell Spit
11. Seeing the coast for the first time after 3 months on the West Coast of the South Island
12. Nugget Point - View on the land
13. A cave at Wharariki Beach
14. If you see this street sign, you know you are at a special place

4. Some dark branches on the Routeburn Track

Maunga
(Mountains)

All pictures apart from the last one were taken in Kā Tiritiri o te Moana, the Southern Alps of the South Island of New Zealand. The mountains of Aotearoa feel different than the European Alps and hold place for many adventures, for new experiences …

2. Standing on top of the famous view of Roy’s Peak
3. Scenic view in Mount Aspiring National Park

Te Rua o te Moko
(The land of the shadows)

The Fiordland feels like the most unique natural area for my New Zealand experience. The never ending green bush with creatures like the Takahē rediscovered, holds place for many mysteries. Walked inside the endless green, while meeting animals like a group of Keas or while standing in a river at dusk, some Whio (blue ducks) were flying over me. Fiordland immersed me totally!

1. A scenic view on the Kepler Track
2. The same view as 1, just with myself featured and a different angle
3. Descending into the bush on the Kepler Track
4. Somewhere in the green bush, idk where
5. Underwater at Lake Te Anau, moments before I got eaten alive by sandflies
6. Again a picture of the Kepler Track, high up
7. Me … on the Kepler Track near swamps
8. Waiau River - or for the Tolkien fans: Anduin
9. A small waterfall - detour off the Kepler Track
10. May the force be with you!
11. I feel there are only pictures of the Kepler Track, including this one …
12. Some plants that are green, wtf idk where exactly this is taken in Fiordland by @pataljonja
