We can't wait until the inevitable happens. The time is now.

Humans have created art since before we could communicate with verbal language. Art is a part of our existence. Art is not just the final product, it is the observable journey that it took to produce that art. By allowing the spread of AI beyond simple private novelty, we are effectively reducing art to nothing but the end result. What is the issue with this?

If we no longer need to create, we no longer need to care.

If we don't care, we die.

Art is not about perfection because life isn't perfect. Art isn't about abundance because life is finite by nature. Art isn't about accessibility because you must work hard for things that matter to you in life.

Art is not about realism because reality is real enough.

This is an open door to observing the many problems we face related to our apathy pandemic in our world, such as nutrition, transportation, human rights, etc., but this issue is more abstract because many people don't understand the societal issues present with this emerging technology. Simply put:

We're letting people who don't care about artists destroy the livelihood and future of these same artists that they train their technology on.

If you like my music, your favorite artists' music, their visual art, their writing, their films, their dances, their food (yes, this is the most obvious next logical inevitability), and everything else they create, don't take away our reasons and motivations for creating. AI is now a farcry from what it was 4 years ago. In another 4 years, it will absolutely be integrated into our lives in ways that could be largely indistinguishable from humanity.

The reality is that we, as artists, need support to live and continue creating. We all want the scourge of capitalism to end and stop destroying lives as much as the next person, but we can't do that overnight. We CAN stop supporting AI overnight, however.

We can do it right now.

Playing on the immortal "Fly Like An Eagle" by the legendary @stevemillerband with the legendary Steve Miller Band at Jazz at Lincoln Center this weekend 🦅

What a ride it's been over the past 10 years. I had no idea what to expect when I got the call to play with Steve in 2016, arriving just a day after I got back from Russia with one of the worst bouts of the flu I've ever experienced... Haha. And he remembers this, too, funny enough. But I powered through it with his encouragement, and the help of my great friend Brianna Thomas, as well. Out of all the bands I get to play with, I always look forward to this one at the top of my list because I get to take a spiritual trip home every single song — and just play some blues!

Endless thanks to Shelly Berg for thinking I could do this and trusting me at just 23 to fill out a horn section with people I was listening to since high school - Mike Rodriguez, Craig Handy, and Lauren Sevian. We've only grown tighter since that time. I'm in awe of the dream rhythm sections that I've gotten the privilege to play with (which, over the years have included Eric Harland, Sonny Emory, and most recently Herlin Riley 🤯), and the guests and stars that I never thought I'd ever meet, like the legendary Jimmy Vaughn (brother of Stevie Ray Vaughn).

And of course, as always, one of the most enigmatic, cultured, cool as hell, and overall beautiful human beings I've ever met, who has selflessly shown me support even outside of his band by coming to my own band's show to watch — Steve Miller. Thank you for everything you've done for this music, and Happy 83rd Birthday! You sure don't look and act 83! 😂

In today's world of ultra-convenience, where everything we could imagine is premade, it's easy to forget that there are real people behind all of it. Every book we like, every game we play, every song we love, every dish we love to eat, every car we choose to drive, every philosophy of life that we follow to guide us through our day — all of it was thought of first. That means it's always possible for anyone to come up with great ideas and apply them. That's what we've always done as humans, but it's getting to a point where we aren't thinking for ourselves anymore.

I understand wanting to find an answer quick because you just don't want to be frustrated, but you SHOULD BE frustrated. Be willingly uncomfortable. Work that brain out. Do what we've been doing for millennia that made us who we are today. Next time you're stuck on a problem like how to play something on your instrument or how to make a difficult decision, don't just look it up online or ask AI, actually try figuring it out yourself, for as long as possible. 9 times out of 10, the answer to your problem is right there — because it's YOUR answer.

Don't forget about your mind. It needs you. Be kind to your mind. ❤️🧠

Happy heavenly 100th birthday to John Coltrane - the man that inspired all of us to look beyond the surface and find the music both within ourselves and our in the universe.

Here's an original of mine called the "Pariah", played with @pocketb @mileslennoxmusic and @stefydrums at @montereyjazzfestival this weekend. I didn't originally think of Coltrane when I wrote this song, but it just seems like every time I pick up the soprano, I'm drawn to his spirit... So I decided to let go and just yield to what felt natural, and as always, he's the ever-present spirit. Thank you for everything. 🙏🏾

Feeling ever fortunate that Universal Truth (@mackavenuerecords) has established itself as one of the most critically acclaimed tributes celebrating the centennials of Miles Davis and John Coltrane. We sat at number one on the jazz charts for eight straight weeks!

The album features @roncarterbassist, @georgecolemanofficial, @jeremypeltthegriot, @tivon_bzz and @joefarnsworthdrums, and explores traditional repertoire alongside a personal, original suite of music.

This might be my new favorite (jazz) solo I've ever played. I don't know how this happened, but I trusted everyone around me and the ever-present spirit of the music and it guided me to this. I'm forever grateful.

"Reels over 3 minutes won't get recommended to new audiences" I don't really care here, I just want to share with you all one of the absolutely magical moments that continue to happen every night with @morrisontrumpet on this Australia tour. More to come later...
