POSTS STORIES REELS
Last week we unloaded the “Jessimonster” Naborigama @cubcreekfoundation after a marathon wood firing with the most lovely group of humans. From lighting to shutdown we invested 14 days into collectively nurturing and growing the alchemical fire to create some really beautiful, one of a kind, pieces of art. I feel blessed to have been able to work along side so many badass, hard working, and kind people….especially those co-leading the firing @heidikreitchet @alexandrabarao @pearlman_studios @turningearthstudios The firing itself presented some challenges, which im still processing, but we persevered and the team pulled through to fire off all 3 chambers beautifully. This event was the perfect example of why I love to wood fire my work. It’s a communal, immersive experience working with the elemental forces where you’re able to practice communication effectively and compassionately, problem solving cooperatively …every step of the way a puzzle…questioning pattern recognition, timing, fuel/air ratios….learning to listen deeper and deeper to understand what the kiln needs to continue its upward climb….and the FOOD was so good…everyone showed up and made delicious meals to fuel the good times….and the stories and connection shared were kindling for the fire. It’s so true that we can learn more through adversity then when things are going smoothly…and how we respond to the challenge may be even more important than the outcome. Yes, we fired beautiful pots….though the inner alchemy of learning and growing through the experience is where the real beauty was created. I’m forever grateful to my dear friend @heidikreitchet , director of CCF for inviting me out as a visiting artist at the beginning of this year. To witness all that Heidi has done so far to grow this program and enhance facilities is truly inspiring. The amount of love and effort she puts into projects she believes in is absolutely remarkable to say the least…..and her efforts to prepare for and host this mega firing event at CCF were tremendous. #woodfiredceramics #cubcreekfoundation #jessimonster2026 #wufar #chrispateceramics by @pate2earth

The Jessimonstress is in full effect! Back is hot and we’re pushing to get tens down in the back. After several days of rain, the sun is out and we are drying out the muddy ground. If you are in the area, please stop by and see the kiln firing! by @pate2earth
Lit!!! Fantastic loading of the 3 chamber Naborigama @cubcreekfoundation #Jessimonster! Couldn’t ask for a better crew…kind, hardworking, and the perfect mix of knowledgeable and experienced crew members and inquisitive new comers. I’m super grateful to be firing with this bunch of lovely humans. We’ll be tending the fire for the next 10 days or so!! Stay tuned!! #woodfiredceramics #cubcreekfoundation #naborigama #jessimonster2026 by @pate2earth
Cub Creek Foundation’s Visiting Artist, Chris Pate, has made an incredible impact on our facilities, kilns, and resident artists. We are thrilled to have Pate here to be a lead for this year’s Noborigama firing. Pate grew up in Central Louisiana and has been working in clay for 17 years. While living in the Pacific Northwest he was introduced to woodfiring his work in 2012. Since, he has built several kilns, participated in a handful of residencies, taught many workshops, and worked with numerous communities to fire dozens of different wood fired kilns around the nation. He’s passionate about education, community collaboration, facilitating creativity, alchemy through interaction, and movement as medicine. I had the great honor of being invited back to Bailey, North Carolina by @gustinceramics to participate in the memorial firing for the late great Dan Finch. The Dan Finch pottery is quite remarkable. Situated on the families massive blueberry nursery. I heard it’s the largest blueberry farm in the country! The kiln is the largest anagama I’ve ever fired. All in all I believe there were 1669 ceramic objects in the kiln. After most of the load I slipped away to the forests of western Virginia for an unforgettable weekend while the kiln was heating up. I attended Ignite, a regional burning man event. Im so glad I did…I made some wonderful new friends and met an epic dance partner! After the weekend I returned to the kiln and fired till completion. It was a beautiful firing with great melt and atmosphere top to bottom and front to back. Dan fostered a wonderful community of artists at the pottery…many of whom helped to fire the kiln. The hospitality was second to none. I felt really lucky and grateful to be a part of it. The crew was top notch….i wish I had everyone’s IG but big thanks to everyone, especially Amy Finch. I loved working and hanging with you all!! @gustinceramics @benowenpottery @cynthiabringle @gordonkulous @don.ridley @k_feefifofum and many others!!! Much Love and Many Thanks!!#woodfiredceramics #anagama #DanFinchPottery #pottery #woodfiredkiln by @pate2earth
