POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I had the pleasure of presenting ‘Gaggle’ in the village of Kalavasos, Cyprus.
Realised in collaboration with @paul_stan_nataraj & Mohamed B. Slama, who created the electrifying and special sound for the performance, and @amaiamolinet , who led a ritualistic procession from my performance to Paul’s.
The installation draws attention to the labour involved in producing, handling and moving materials on a large scale. Sugar becomes a metaphor for labour and mass production, connecting to the Kalavasos mines and the wider history of Cyprus, where sugar was once a major export to Europe.
Through the audience participation, filling, carrying and arranging the tea cups, the work brought the everyday into the industrial space of the Olive Mill.
A very special thank you to the people of Kalavasos who lent their tea cups and became part of the work. 🤍

More special thanks to @d6culture & @contesteddesires for the opportunity. 🩵

Free to Roam with @patrick_ziza and Mwenza Blell at @giftfest offered space to consider who gets to move freely, who and by whom the world is built for, and how we find - or create - the third spaces where we can belong.

The workshop began with an invitation from Ziza and Mwenza to take our shoes off and put on one of the many mismatched pairs laid out. We then walked - often unevenly and clumsily - in these new shoes, pausing to ask each other questions.

This led to a conversation between Ziza and Mwenza. Ziza spoke about creating ‘third’ spaces through embodied performance where traditions and futures meet. Moving between lived experience, theory and creative practice, the conversation asked urgent questions about freedom, belonging and resistance - is it ever possible to truly be in someone else’s shoes? And what does it mean to be free within systems structured by deep asymmetries?

Thank you so much to Ziza and Mwenza for making visible what is so often unseen; to our amazing audience and their rich insightful questions. And to GIFT for this collaboration.

💫 Ziza will be continuing these explorations in an open studio at D6 for @thelateshows, in a durational performance, alongside work by @efuasutherland and @paul_stan_nataraj.

✨Sat 9 May, 6pm-10.30pm, D6, 5, Charlotte Square, NE1 4XF

Ziza is developing Free To Roam through Contested Desires residencies - including at the @museoegizio, Turin, Santiago’s @museodelamemoria and with D6 in Newcastle.

Powerful stories. Shared experiences.

We were proud to be part of @thelateshows, celebrating incredible art, collaboration and cultural heritage across the North East 💫 🌃

Huge thanks to @patrick_ziza, @paul_stan_nataraj and @efuasutherland. Rooted in the North East, their art brings forward powerful and often overlooked stories, connecting them to wider global histories shaped by colonialism.

Developed through @contesteddesires residencies in Newcastle, Amsterdam, Budapest, Lisbon, Turin and Santiago, it was a real joy to share the work with our Late Shows audience.

Thank you to everyone who came by, and to all those who made it possible.

More about the artwork in the images…

✨Ziza’s durational performance reimagined maps and found objects to reveal colonial traces and hidden hierarchies, animating ceramic forms alongside domestic figurines and collectables.

✨Paul presented sound installations shaped by collaborative listening with communities in South Shields and Budapest, and collective responses to colonial voyages rooted in the collections at Lisbon’s National Museum of Natural History and Science.

✨Elisabeth’s films shared expanding research into Black and African lives in Newcastle, through retracing historical sites and interviews with Beverley Prevatt-Goldstein and Pat Poinen - founders of NEEACA and African Lives in Northern England.

We warmly thank the artists taking part. Contested Desires is co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union. In the UK, we are grateful for the support of @acegrams, @heritagefunduk and @communityfoundationnortheast and @newcastlecouncil's Newcastle Culture Investment Fund.

What a way to celebrate the final international residency of @ContestedDesires. 💫

At the @xarkis__ Festival in Kalavasos, all 22 artists came together to share artistic research developed over three years and shaped by encounters with place, history and community.

It was a joy to see D6 artists @patrick_ziza and @paul_stan_nataraj presenting work alongside artists from across Europe, Africa and South America. Through residencies in Cyprus and beyond, they've built relationships, gained new perspectives and developed ideas that will continue to shape their work back home in the North of England.

We were also delighted to reconnect with @efuasutherland, @andreas_mallouris, @afroscope, @marialuigiagioffre and @elguendelman, who have been part of our residency programme in Newcastle.

Thank you to the @xarkis__ team and people of Kalavasos for this incredible opportunity for collaboration and cultural exchange.

As this chapter closes, we're celebrating the friendships and creative possibilities that will carry on long after the residency ends. Thank you to every artist who joined us on the journey. 💫

@contesteddesires has reached a major milestone - the final international residency of the programme is underway in Cyprus. 💫

We're thrilled to be here alongside all 22 artists from across Europe, Africa and South America - including our own @patrick_ziza and @paul_stan_nataraj. Their experiences in Cyprus, as well as residencies in Chile, Hungary, Italy and Portugal, will return with them, enriching future work and collaborations back home in the North of England.

Hosted by @xarkis__ Festival in the village of Kalavasos, we're encountering the place through local memories, nature, archives and traditions.

It’s also a joy to be reunited with artists who took part in D6 residencies in Newcastle - @eefuasutherland, @andreas_mallouris, @afroscope , @marialuigiagioffre and @elguendelman, picking up conversations and relationships built over the course of the project.

💫 All this is a reminder of what international exchange can do - open space for new voices, surface histories that often go untold, and link local stories to a much bigger global conversation. 💫

Come celebrate with us!

Gaggle - Patrick Ziza - Sept 12 / 19:00 - 20:00

EN
Patrick Ziza is a British-Rwandan experimental artist whose work spans across performance, dance, and visual art, always inspired by both Rwandan cultural heritage and the western environment in which he resides. His most recent work, “Gaggle,” was realised at D6: Culture in Transit, Newcastle upon Tyne as part of the 2026 Late Show, and will be expanded through his residency at Xarkis Festival, with the village of Kalavasos acting as a source of materials, site, history and inspiration.

In Kalavasos, he will explore what might sit between the archaeological fragment and the absent body: movement, sound, labour, repetition, gathering and collective memory, while discovering relationships between objects and humans. This research will take place at an archeological site and its surrounding landscape, enhanced by conversations with local residents and engagement with the contemporary understandings of music, dance, ritual and community.

ΕΛ
Το τελευταίο του έργο, Gaggle, παρουσιάστηκε στο D6: Culture in Transit, στο Newcastle upon Tyne, στο πλαίσιο του 2026 Late Show, και θα αποτελέσει τη βάση για περαιτέρω ανάπτυξη κατά τη διάρκεια της φιλοξενίας του στο Xarkis.

Drop in this Thursday for our final Open Rehearsal! @patrick_ziza continues ideas of convening and connection in the finale in our series of gatherings. 🌱

📅 Thursday 13 August | 12–5pm
📌 The NewBridge Project, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE2 1AL

Slow down and explore this early research with Ziza, as the gallery becomes a space for live experimentation. Witness and engage with early-stage research inspired by the storytelling practices of cowherds. Ziza will test how voice, repetition, and sound can evoke memory, care, and a sense of belonging, through rhythmic pastoral poetry and chanting traditionally performed for cattle. 🐄

Materials will be moved, arranged, and transformed throughout the space, with Ziza activating the installation as a living environment; one that can be inhabited, reshaped, and experienced through performance. 🌿

This year marks 9 years of Dandyism Dance.

From its beginnings in 2017 through Dance Edit at @dance_city_newcastle (swipe for images 1–3), to receiving full Arts Council funding in 2018/19, for public performances in Sunderland (The Bridges and Winter Gardens in 2019), it’s been a journey I never imagined.

Tomorrow I’m back in the studio as part of Creative Summer @dance_city_newcastle . And yes… surprise, surprise… a dandy character is making another appearance. I’ll be exploring new movement, leaning further into satire and absurdity, and seeing where it takes the new trajectory. The more I revisit the Dandyism archive, the more I realise how deeply fashion and style have shaped everything I make.

As I start thinking about the 10 year anniversary in 2027 (funded or not), I’m excited to keep pushing boundaries, stirring things up, and seeing where the work goes next.

Thank you to everyone who’s been part of Dandyism from the very beginning until now. There is much to say and people to thank but this post reflects on the beginnings ❤️

💫 D6 celebrated the power of collaboration at an event bringing together artists and collaborators whose work is rooted in the North East and shaped by international perspectives through @contesteddesires.

Over the past two years, artists have worked across Chile, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal and the UK, exploring colonial legacies through collaboration with museums, archives and communities.

@efuasutherland traced the lives of Black and African people connected to the North East during the era of Empire. Her research was enriched through collaboration with African Lives in Northern England, revealing connections between figures including Frederick Douglass and Henry ‘Box’ Brown. ✨

@paul_stan_nataraj's practice centres on deep listening and shared storytelling. Working with @sanginiafriend in South Shields and Mira in Budapest, he explored stories of migration creating collective work.✨

As Paul reflected with @padmarao_artsconnect: the joy lies in connecting the pieces of the puzzle together, working through complexity, and creating new energy through collaboration.

@patrick_ziza's multidisciplinary project Free to Roam examines how histories are constructed and sustained through systems of power and knowledge. Ziza reflected on the opportunity for critical reflection with Mwenza Blell, researcher, artist and community organiser. Ziza said: We are the infrastructure. We tangle, connect and grow through those connections.✨

A panel discussion led by Dr Leona Vaughn highlighted a common theme across all the projects: meaningful creative work grows through trust, long-term relationships and shared learning. Through residencies, public events and research support, D6 has helped create the conditions for these partnerships to flourish.

Thank you to the artists, collaborators, speakers, D6 Producer in Residence Aisha Khateeb, Sangini Community Chef Azizun Nessa, The Customs House, and all who joined the conversation.

Contested Desires is co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union. In the UK @aceagrams, @heritagefunduk, @communityfoundationnortheast & Newcastle Council's Culture Investment Fund.
