A message from our CEO, Phil Douglas…

After 10 incredible years of founding, building and leading Curious Arts, I have reached the difficult decision to move on from my role as CEO this coming November.

In 2016 after researching and identifying a distinct lack in LGBT+ cultural provision in the North East; I set out to put energy, care and time in to developing a high quality, inclusive and accessible response. From the award winning platform for queer arts, Curious Festival, which evolved in to the charity Curious Arts we know now, to the recent development of our trading company Curious Futures. I have had an incredible journey, it has shaped who I am, and I am so proud of what has been achieved.

A decade of ideas, creatives, audiences, volunteers, participants and communities, with Prides big and Mini, festivals, trikes, shows, commissions, projects, youth groups and more. The last two years alone including completing my @cloreleadership Fellowship, leading the campaign for Hartlepool to have Creative People and Places Investment @rockpoolshartlepool and picking up @newcastlepride.uk 2026.

As Curious heads into its next chapter, It feels the right time to welcome the fresh perspectives and energy of a new custodian. A leadership role will be advertised in the coming weeks.

Founding and developing Curious has been the greatest achievement of my professional life. Opening hearts and minds, challenging stereotypes, supporting families and communities to see themselves, supporting and platforming artists to create bold queer art and share in that joy.

Reflecting on the last decade, I believe now, more than ever in the transformative power of the arts and the need for investment in and fairness for LGBTQIA+ communities and will continue to advocate loudly, in my next chapter and wherever it leads.

To everyone who has been part of Curious, both supporting me and the organisation’s work, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Stay Curious and Proud x
