Photography for @amouageofficial -- the most sophisticated, high-art perfumery: down to the earth of the ingredients and its dedication to cultivating great craft involving select artists & craftsmen. I had the opportunity to document the journey of Amouage's coming to Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, and it was an awe to see so much care put into every detail of every aspect I witnessed: from the conversations around what textures to make & how much texture is the right amount, to the specificity on hue of colors for each element. Real gold on the walls, craftsmen behind the construct that have lived as carpenters their whole lives, and designers with eyes over every aspect of the brand experience, and that's everything beyond the perfume. 👏🏼🙂‍↕️ As a brand photographer, I always say: we need to pay attention not just to making things "look" good, but actually making what's in front of the lens truly excellent in reality, and then photography just attempts to capture some of the marvel that's happening. Here are some of my favorite captures from inside the upcoming Beverly Hills store, from Day 1 of the journey back a few of months ago. Analogizing the next-level craftsmanship of not just surfing, but hand-making the very tool we use to surf the great ocean to the level of care Amouage puts into perfumery, fragrance & brand articulation, and the biological symbiosis between man & nature. While this full-length video (3rd slide) did not make the publication, aspects of it did, and this is the behind-the-scenes on my intended narrative to form the analogy. In late 2008 I knocked on the back door of Bouchon Beverly Hills. I was about 20 and just leaving a budding career in aerospace. I knew nothing about the kitchen, but I was able to land a Stage early on. I have to admit it was pretty intimidating walking into that kitchen for the first time. It looked immaculate, everybody dressed in white coats, French blue aprons, & not a stain on them. Spotless kitchen, everybody in unison yelling Yes Chef! to Rory Hermann’s commands. I watched in awe. I started out by learning from guys like Chef Johnny about standards. I was a rookie. They were veterans. Every cook in LA wanted the chance to work here. I stood at the end of that pass every day for what added up to be 3 years. I started as a stage then commis then on the line I worked the entire day, morning to night there, open to close just hoping to get an opportunity to learn from my peers when I was done with my work. I wouldn't leave lol Chef Rory had me stand at the far end of the kitchen near the Chefs desk as he would share his philosophies. I would listen and watch. Also where the fish station was, you were there at the time, chef @johnnyrayzone. I learned a lot from you by watching and running around like a madman trying to help wherever I could. Bouchon became my home and everybody there became family. it was a place of learning, but also place where we could be honest with one another and reinforce the why behind practicing excellence. You always had high standards, Chef. I almost didn't go to the Hayley Williams show last night, but, as expected: I loved it, and it reminded me of something I think we could all use a reminder of. How often do you call off something you've had planned, that you know you'd enjoy or that you know is good for you? I bet this happens to many people often. I almost didn't go, but then I thought: @yelyahwilliams is probably The Artist of our lifetime in her category and generation, and definitely my number 1 in her category. Life is just a long series of: "you could.......but did you?" It takes a lot of awareness to realize in the moment that some things are once in a lifetime or time-limited, like your friend's kid's 1st birthday, or the uncertain amount of weekends you have left to spend with your parents, or Hayley Williams covering @erykahbadu and duetting Stay the Night with @zedd, Live at your favorite venue: @hollywoodbowl. I understand you sometimes don't want to put in the effort, but Life feeling like it's worth living lies on the other side of putting in that work, and for all of the moments involving the things & people you love, I hope you--more often than not--decide to give it your all. 💌 This is a love letter to Motherhood: to the women who chose it and the women who had to, ft. my blood mom. While women are highlighted these days more for professional successes and achieving independence, I wanted to take this opportunity gifted by @photovogue to highlight mothers, who, like mine, have the majority of their life's work represented by that their children survived---many times at the sacrifice of their mother's own youthful life. Nobody talks about how mothers lose 18+ years, per child, of the freedom to chase dreams, travel, go out, build hobbies that aren't based in the home. To do that in the prime years of your youth? That's your entire life--a sacrifice I honor here. When I ask my mom about her hobbies, who she is, what she does for fun, or who is she friends with, she doesn't have an abundant answer. I never understood until realizing that the prime years to form those were given to my sister & I. It's an ultimate sacrifice impossible to pay back that children & society seldom gives enough credit to. She grew up eating plain rice & fish sauce as a primary meal, because her family lost everything in a big fire. She also faced the Vietnam war and abuse & infidelity, but chose courage & resilience and didn't abandon me or my sister, raising us with a single income: 3 mouths, 1 paycheck--at the cost of her own luxuries and nutrition, often barely weighing 90 lbs. If you look at the 5th photo, you'll see the change from when I was born until now: all her youth. She also seldom smiles, which is why these photos are special, because after us, she found purpose again in mothering her dog: Nugget, who returns maximum gratitude: the one gift a parent wants--that their children make it and acknowledge them. Every morning before 5am work, she walks him with a cane in one hand, because there are coyotes and one was inches away from snatching him one time. It took 4 days to figure out how to write a "love letter" with a photograph, not just show Love. It was also important to me to show her age & show the life she's gone through. Celebrating the grand opening of @ilovelaflea. LA Flea has been the iconic fashion flea market of LA for the past few years, where some of LA's most fashionable people frequent every weekend, including surprise visitors like @madisonbeer. When I heard @chefstephentrujillo was getting a coffee residency there, I had to swing by for coffee and also check out the fashion. Here are some people from a quick 25 min photo session with my @fujifilmx_us x100vi. I've been into fashion since I was 13--more in admiration of style, self-expression, and outward show of originality. I was taking photos in Los Angeles Chinatown, when a man struck a memorable conversation with me, and I didn't realize I had my glasses recording until it beeped. He tells me about his love for photography, his daughters, his late wife, and his recent father & brother. And then we take each other's portraits. Connection in LA is heavily wanted, but heavily yearned for how uncommon it is. While everyone's stressed, lonely, and trying to make their dream come true. Everyone's too worried about looking the part, or paying their next bills, to be able to let their walls down and connect, but everyone yearns for community. I think it's just something we have to proactively take part in as a collective, together, and take initiative, like Dale does here, to bridge that gap and have those open, kind conversations. You never know who you'll meet, or how those brave chances can change your day or your life. Thanks for talking to me that day, @mrdmf1, and sharing your story; it changed my day, and I hope it changed yours.
