POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Posting again this week for the #fridaymusicchallenge !!!

This week is hosted by @thisisvinyl.tap and his chosen theme is “post an album you would like to discuss on a podcast.” Killer theme idea!

I chose “Exposure” by @esperanzaspalding which is an absolutely radical concept for an album! Her goal was to create an album in just 77 hours with her band, as well as some guests (@robertglasper @andrewbirdmusic @lalahhathaway ), and boy did she deliver! It truly is an “exposure” in the sense that the studio time was booked, the goal was created, and the product was pressed to wax. And that is that!

Esperanza chose an open creative process, putting up a giant roll of paper to write down musical and lyrical ideas during the process, and as a gift to those who pre-ordered the album (that’s right, the preorder happened BEFORE the sessions, adding an extra layer of pressure), she cut out individual strips of the paper, and put them on each individual cover (also signed by her). Every copy is unique. I LOVE that. It was also a limited pressing, and is only officially available on vinyl…you won’t be finding this one on Spotify.

First post on this page in awhile. I’ll have to get back to more regularly posting.

My good friend @patricksrec_collec is hosting this week’s #fridaymusicchallenge and the theme is “Most Unusual Record In your Collection”. I would have to say the most unusual I have is this Edison Diamond Disc featuring Conway’s Band on Side A performing “Tenth Regiment March” and Side B “Kiluura- Hawaiian Patrol”.

This and another of the Edison records came to be in my possession through inheriting a collection from my uncle who inherited a friend’s collection after his passing. These play at 78 RPM although I’ve read that the intended speed varies as these discs were a new product for Edison after years of releasing music on cylinders.

Thanks to @grooves.andneedles and @fridaymusicchallenge for letting my buddy host this. by @patricksrec_collec

I am honored to host this week’s #fridaymusicchallenge with the theme “the most unusual record in your collection.” I’ve already seen so many incredibly cool, and unusual records shared! Collecting weird, and unusual records that I’m sure will not be included in my friends’ collections is one of my greatest joys in life! Vinyl is art, and one’s art collection should reflect their personality…

…I am a proud Kentuckian, born and raised! So when my friend @tinyhowdy sent me a advertisement reel of this record, I knew I had to have it! @ale8one is a legendary soft drink (think a more molasses-y ginger ale) made, and bottled right here in Kentucky! I always enjoyed popping open a bottle with my friends on hot summer days growing up.

This unusual record consists of some lo-fi, guitar-riff based music on Side A, with actual recorded “found sounds” recorded from the Ale-8 One bottling factory. Side B is simply more sound recordings from the factory that act as a blue collar, factory-life meditation. This record was created by @powerfulgrams and I’m so glad it exists. It’s an excellent conversation piece, especially for us Kentuckians. And how cool is the bottle cap for the center label?!

I’ve got plenty more weird, and eclectic vinyl to share in the future, but I felt like this one really fit the theme perfectly, with a personal KY touch!

Thank you for having me on as a host @fridaymusicchallenge and @grooves.andneedles and thank you @berry1975m for the great interview!

Theme: Late To The Party - an artist you discovered late, or a classic album that took a while to add to your collection. This this week, the challenge is hosted by my friend since middle school, @downsouthspins …cool theme, brother!

I cheated a bit, double-featured, and answered both sides of the prompt! You can draw a direct line from one to the other though…

Classic Album that entered my collection in 2023: “Magical Mystery Tour” - 1967 - The Beatles

A formidable follow-up to their landmark, ground-breaking album “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” MMT feels in many ways like a companion album, or at least the natural extension of SPLHCB. MMT is a psychedelic fan fare, and truly contains some of The Beatles most iconic, and well-known songs: “I Am The Walrus,” “Hello, Goodbye,” Strawberry Fields Forever,” “Penny Lane,” and “All You Need Is Love”…..on the SAME album. Anywho, this album was gifted to me by a parent of one of my students who had a duplicate. This one is complete with the in-sleeve pages, as well as the larger story packet inside (not featured). Truly a gem!

Next: An artist I discovered late: The Lemon Twigs, and their newest album, “Everything Harmony.” My buddy @tony_kahn turned me onto this album sometime late-summer of last year. I listened to it on the way back from a gig in Asheville, and was just blown away. Perfectly recorded, excellent songwriting, musical execution, and most importantly, purpose. This album is truly something to behold. Standout tracks are: “In My Head,” “Corner Of My Eye,” and “Any Time Of Day.” “Everything Harmony” has a distinctive late ‘60s to mid - ‘70s vibe, and takes direct influence from the Beatles and their contemporaries…while imploring mid ‘90s “radio friendly alternative rock” sensibilities in a way that has no business working so well. I know the Beatles influence, because when they came and played @whirlingtiger back in October, they finished the show with a cover of “Hold Me Tight.” Their show blew my face off my head with how tight the band was, and their multi-instrumental prowess…so good.

Album #8 - “What’s Going On” (1971) - Marvin Gaye

This is such a classic album. “What’s Going On” has an interesting and rich history involving its creation…but most importantly, the music is simply divine. This album is a crucial stitch in the deeply woven fabric of American popular music, and so, it is in my opinion, deserving of the title “greatest album of all time.” It’s tough to pin down a favorite album, but this one might just be it. Even named my cat after Marvin Gaye.

Gaye’s duet partner, Tammi Terrell, collapsed in his arms onstage during a concert in 1967, and it was later determined that she had brain cancer. In 1970, she died at the age of 24. Gaye was inconsolable, and became a recluse for a while. Disillusioned with the entertainment industry, plagued with a bad cocaine habit, and depressed from the death of his duet partner and failure of his marriage, Gaye began writing music that reflected systemic problems in America through the lens of his own. He also dropped the sleek, dapper standard that top Motown artists were generally expected to adhere to, grew a beard and started to wear sandals and more comfortable clothing.

I have two favorite stories from the making of this album. The first involves the recording of the title track, “What’s Going On,” in which Gaye showed the song to some members of the “Funk Brothers” who urged him to record it immediately…so they went out to find famous bassist James Jamerson. Jamerson was playing a gig with a blues band, when the other Funk Brothers members convinced him to leave and come to the studio…and he was so drunk from the gig, he had to lay on the floor in order to play his parts…and of course, in typical Jamerson fashion, absolutely crushed it. The second involved Gaye bringing the newly recorded title track to Berry Gordy (head of Motown), where Gordy promptly told Gaye that he hated the single. Members of Motown then secretly released 100k copies of the single on the Motown subsidiary label, Tamla. Upon its success, Gaye was given full creative freedom to produce a full album, and did so in only 10 days.

Legendary perfection.

Album #7 - “Aim And Ignite” - fun. (released 2009, re-pressed 2023)

I’m definitely late this week, but squeezing in a quick post that’s relevant to the 4th of July! I picked this one up from @guestroomrecordslouisville a few months ago. This is the debut record by the band fun. and it is truly something else. fun. is a supergroup of three (at the time) Indie Rock musicians: @nateruess of The Format, @jackantonoff of Steel Train, and Andrew Dost of Anathallo, but their combined effort blends all of their talents into something honest, innovative, genre-bending, and…fun! Each member would go on to future success in solo careers and collaborations (…Taylor Swift in Antonoff’s case).

I remember my friend Nick in high school telling me about this band, and from his description…I kind of thought I wouldn’t be into it…and at first I wasn’t. But something about the songs just grabbed me. They took risks in their song forms, mixing, and arrangements…I was hooked.

This vinyl is gorgeous, to be completely honest. The color is “Blue Jay” and my favorite color of any record in my collection. The main album is spread across 2 records, with side D being some bonus tracks and different mixes. This particular pressing’s packaging is among the most impressive I’ve dealt with in terms of art and practicality. Overall a great vinyl pressing treatment for an equally quality album.

I was inspired to feature this record because at the end of our family’s annual 4th of July fireworks show, I found some of our favorite fireworks at the bottom of the pile…Roman Candles! When I looked at the packaging, I noticed something I hadn’t noticed before: the graphic design of the Roman Candles packaging had a very similar style to this album cover and it’s record sleeves. Track 6 is “Light A Roman Candle With Me”…duh! At that moment, I knew this was the album feature of the week!

Album #6: “Fugue State EP” (2014) - @vulfpeck - First Pressing (2017)

This record is actually not the first Vulfpeck record in my collection, but it’s one of my favorites for sure. It’s also rare, as just over 1.3k copies of this pressing were made, making this one of the rarer (but not rarest) of my collection! Vulfpeck did not initially release this one in vinyl format, hence the first pressing year of 2017, rather than its actual release year of 2014. This particular vinyl is actually a 12” 45rpm, heavy black vinyl, which is honestly really neat. This was a gift from my now wife…and she knocked it out of the park!!

“Fugue State” is the last of Vulfpeck’s EPs, and in my opinion, it’s their best EP by far. The track listing is so strong! Opening with the title track, Vulf shows their composition prowess in a song that is very uncharacteristic of them, and pays tribute to the general sound and feel of a classic Baroque fugue. Track 2 is perhaps Vulfpeck’s best known song, 1612 featuring the vocal talents of @antwaunstanley …no need to ask a Vulfpeck fan what their PIN number is 😂. Track 3 is probably my favorite from the album, “First Place,” which is so classic Vulfpeck, and exhibits an upbeat, yet melancholic vibe. “Sky Mall” is a wild tune which features an artificially sped up ending, and if my memory serves me correct (it often doesn’t), one of the Rhodes leg stands falls over during this recording. Next, we have a misprint!! In the original EP, “Christmas In L.A.” is instrumental, and longer than the vocal version that would appear on their first LP, “Thrill of the Arts,” and though it is labeled as “instrumental” on this first pressing, they actually accidentally include the vocal version! Finally, “Newsbeat” is a chill funk groove to round out this masterpiece of an EP.

Love this album, and can’t wait to post next week!

Album #5 - “Dr. Dundiff & Friends” (2016)

Where to begin with this one… This album is frozen in time. A representation of a turning point in my, and so many of my friends’ lives.

In 2015, my good friend, @drdundiff began a grassroots effort to grab the attention of @forecastlefest promising to bring the biggest names of Louisville’s hip-hop scene together on-stage for one big hometown party. It worked! So he got a band of what felt like a million musicians, and we worked our asses off to put together a crazy set of original, Louisville hip-hop. Playing keyboards and singing in this band was one of the best experiences of my life.

Fast-forward to early 2016, when a donor decided to forever capture this moment by sending us to record the whole set at @lalalandaplace which we did over a 3-day period. This album features a host of insane musicians, rappers, and two of Louisville’s most widely known musicians, @removador of @mymorningjacket and a VERY young @jackharlow .

Only 500 copies of this beautiful sky-blue vinyl were pressed, and I believe the rest of the inventory not initially sold can be found at @record_shop …so go get you one! Love all of the musicians on this project!

Album #4 - “Hey Arnold! The Music, Vol. 1” (2020) - 1st Pressing - Autographed by @craigbartlett (creator) and Jim Lang (composer)

I was honestly hoping to save this album for later, but as promised, I respected the results of the poll in my story! This album is undoubtedly among my most prized vinyl in my collection. Here’s the story:

In 2020, I heard via Craig and Jim’s instagram accounts that they would be releasing a vinyl run of the music of Hey Arnold!, a cartoon from the 1990s that I watched literally all the time as a kid. It was a cartoon that dealt with real life issues in fun, but real ways. Also, on the music side of the coin, it’s jazz/hip-hop/R&B soundtrack was a huge draw for me, something I didn’t realize at the time, as I did not yet have a firm understand of my musical inclinations. I knew I had to get a copy…

…however, it slipped my mind and I lost my opportunity to order a first pressing. I was too late! That is until Craig and Jim both announced that they would be hand-signing first pressings of the record, and anyone could win a copy (I think they had limited it to 10-15 copies?) if one were to make a minimum donation to select charities, screenshot a picture of the donation, and send it to them as proof. Then you’d be entered in to win a copy. Given the time (late Spring/early Summer of 2020), one of the charities was Color For Change, an organization dedicated to promoting racial justice in America. So, I did my part, donated, and even though I was not guaranteed a record, at least it would go to a good cause. Lucky for me, I was chosen, and got an email from Jim Lang himself!!!

It was a long wait to receive the vinyl. The vinyl had to travel cross country to reach both Craig and Jim so they could sign it before it arrived in Louisville. You’ll see both men’s’ autographs, with Craig’s featuring a doodle of his most famous character, Arnold. Though that doodle itself is not rare (he often includes the doodle in his signature), having one on this particular piece is quite rare…1 of 10 or 15. And that’s why this is one of my most prized vinyl.

Record #3: “Duke” - Genesis (1980)

This vinyl is not of the era, but rather a 2021 reissue on white vinyl (beautiful). Bought recently at @guestroomrecordslouisville which I’ve been frequenting regularly about once a month. Sometimes when the budget is tight…I’ll still go haha. Last year I went in and found another Genesis reissue…and without fail every time I’ve been in since, another Genesis reissue that I need for my collection (working on their discography) is on the shelves.

@genesis_band is one of my all-time favorite bands, and this is the album that got me into them. I had the privilege of going to see them on their tour, The Last Domino in 2021 in Pittsburgh. It was absolute pure joy! To me this album represents a band redefining, and re-finding themselves. You can hear Collins settle confidently in his position as lead vocalist (though he had been lead vocalist for 3 albums up to this point…more on that in future posts). You can hear him begin to experiment with his drum sounds, and begin the path of reshaping drum tone that would define the 1980s. Almost immediately after releasing this album, he would begin recording his debut solo album, Face Value (1981) that would reward him with worldwide fame. In fact, he was writing songs for Fave Value at the same time as the writing/recording process of Duke. It’s truly inspiring to think about, honestly. Of course, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford supplied most of the material for Duke, and Rutherford’s songs in particular shine, in my opinion.

Anyways, fantastic album, and I’m excited to share more Genesis albums in the future. Stay tuned for next week’s pick…I’m thinking maybe something kind of novelty? I’ve got some weird ones, for sure!
