Jeff O'Lantern by Charlie Greenwald
reviewed by: Patti & Sweetie

Patti's review: “Such a fun and sweet story about self-acceptance and sharing your gifts with others. The illustrations are lovely and complement the tale perfectly. A great read for Spooky Season and any day of the year!”

Sweetie’s review: “Sweet book. Jeff, don’t ever let your brother make you feel inferior. I’m sure you both are equally delicious.” >^..^<

Fragments of Riversong by Farah Ghuznavi
reviewed by: Patti & Sweetie

Patti's review:

"Fragments of Riversong is a beautiful compilation of short stories that delights with its vivid tales of Bangladeshi life, both in Bangladesh and abroad. Each of Farah Ghuznavi’s tales intrigued and hooked me; her writing is infused with so much wit and compassion.

"Most of these stories are of struggle against rigid social and governmental expectations and systems, yet they are imbued with such hope and awe for the beauties, complexities and resilience of people. Many of the tales feature Bangladeshi women finding creative ways of getting around harsh patriarchal oppression to survive and even achieve their dreams.

"My first copy, the paperback, is full of post-its marking favorite scenes, passages, and wickedly funny lines, and I now have the gorgeous hardback to add to my bookshelf (thank you Farah!). Both are the 10th anniversary edition of the original release and feature brand new material. Farah's stories leave me daydreaming about her characters, wondering what will happen to them next. I hope someday she will indulge me and her countless other fans with sequels in a future edition—or, even better, a brand new compilation!"

Sweetie’s review: "There are dogs in these stories but no cats. What does the author have against cats?" >^..^<

Pet-ty Book Review no. 17
Sushi and Sea Lions by Rachel Corsini
reviewed by: Patti & Sweetie

Patti’s review: “Sushi and Sea Lions is a sweet and spicy story (NSFW!) about a ballerina who takes a nasty fall on the stage, causing her whole life to literally come crashing down around her. Not only must she build an entirely new career, but also revamp her sense of self and find new purpose.

“Adding to the disgrace of having to move back to Queens (I can say this because I’m from Queens), when she finally gains the self-esteem to dump her rich but no-good boyfriend, he replaces her with none other than her rival at the ballet company—who’s also stolen her starring role! 😡

“What else can a girl do but hook up with the neighborhood hottie (a childhood chum who just happens to be one of Daniela’s brother’s best friends—yikes). Vincent’s dealing with his own issues—a recent divorce and child custody battles—so there are plenty of rocks on the road to romance.

“Author Rachel Corsini peppers this feel-good tale with lots of laughs amidst a cast of loveable characters (Daniela’s gal pals are a special delight). There’s also plenty of life wisdom to be gleaned, but never in such a way that you feel like the pages have suddenly been switched with a self-help book.

“Just be careful not to leave it lying around where curious kids might happen upon it. The writing shocked my cat regarding the hijinks humans can get up to (yes, my cat read it, she is talented).”

Sweetie’s review: “Human mating rituals are highly illogical. They could have had dozens of litters by the time the story ended.” >^..^<

Hole Lotta Trouble by Thérèse Lynch
reviewed by: Patti & Sweetie

Patti’s review: “Fergus won our hearts in A Mole in One, refusing to listen to the naysayers and insisting on following his own path. Now in the lovely sequel, Hole Lotta Trouble, Fergus and his best friend Frances the fox are back.

“The new installment begins with Fergus, in his new role as (spoiler alert for Book 1!) caddie for The Champ—a longtime winner who’s challenged by a hot new talent, The Hammer. The Champ shanks a drive into the dreaded Willow Woods—quite a scary place for a little mole who’s used to safely habituating underground. In the woods, the brave and loyal Fergus must conquer new challenges in order to perform his duty and give his friend The Champ a chance to win the tournament.

“My favorite moment is when Fergus outwits a “villain” in a way that showcases not only his ingenuity, but also his sweetness. In her gentle and humorous style, Thérèse Lynch creates another fun adventure about persistence, courage, commitment, and how staying the course can lead to wonderful surprises.

“As with any picture book, the images are just as important as the story, and this sequel does not disappoint with a new set of gorgeous illustrations by Xiao. There’s even a little mole rat hiding a handful of times in the pages, challenging children to find him. The end delivers a wonderful punchline, and leaves us wanting even more Fergus. Bring on Book 3!”

Sweetie's review: “What's not to love? Fergus and a whole new gang of small critters to eat. I mean, root for.” >^..^<
