Fellow author @patticalkosz has written a young adult novel so heartfelt that you will never want it to end. Olaf and Essex is the tale of two unlikely friends, a bear and a fox, on a mission to help a magical baby in NYC. The story expertly threads the needle of hilarious and profoundly touching.

Patti and I share not only a deep respect for the animal kingdom and a love of NYC but also our illustrator @xiaostudio17, whom I suspect has her own magical wand. 😉

This book captured my heart in the most unexpected way! Olaf and Essex begins as a charming romp with a kindhearted bear and wise fox rescuing a baby from a malicious witch. As the story progresses, it is much deeper than an adventure with magic and talking animals.

Olaf teaches us that love transcends all, even death, even species. Essex teaches us to trust, even when you’re not so sure it’s the right thing to do. But, most of all, what really touched me was the portrayal of the afterlife in this story. It’s done in a comforting heartwarming way, making it feel less scary and strangely reassuring.

I can’t wait for the next one! #bookreview #yafantasy #fantasy #yafiction #fiction #booktok #bookstagram #literature

Not since Harry Potter have I devoured a YA novel like this one. Olaf and Essex, by first-time author @patticalkosz is just that good. And...my favorite illustrator in the world @xiaostudio17 added her own extraordinary talents to this tale. Brilliant!

Full review below:

Olaf and Essex is a unique novel that transcends genres and appeals to readers of all ages, touching anyone with a heart.

At the center of the story is Olaf, a kindhearted yet somewhat misguided bear, and his best friend, Essex, a wise and protective fox. Alongside their cantankerous cat and the magical inhabitants of New York City—witches, trees, puddles—you name it—they embark on a mission to rescue a baby they've named Football (aka Madison) from the clutches of a bumbling, but wicked witch named Mabel.

Their adventure involves a series of misadventures, including kidnapping and rescuing Football multiple times. As the story progresses, Olaf, Essex, and Football form a unique "family" of sorts. We discover that each animal in the tale has faced tragic events in their past, resulting in profound loss.

Author Patti Calkosz expertly immerses us in the magical world of NYC, particularly with her vivid descriptions of Central Park and its hidden corners. More importantly, she highlights the symbiotic relationships between all living beings and their mutual reliance for protection, love, and light.

The beautiful portrayal of the afterlife is one I will not soon forget. Additionally, the illustrations by Xiao are magnificent! I highly recommend this imaginative novel for readers aged 8 and up, as it contains both humorous and poignant moments that resonate with adults as well.

I've had the great opportunity to read the wholesome and witty debut novel written by lovely @patticalkosz .
🐻
We follow a bear and a fox, Olaf and Essex, best friends for life, on their journey through NYC, trying to find a baby's real parents. Mentioned baby, youngest child of the Magic Chief Detector, has been kidnapped by a witch couple to coerce the Chief into releasing all imprisoned witches of New York. But clumsy Olaf scares them away in the middle of the night and finds himself alone with this tiny human being.
🦊
Together with clever Essex and their cat fellow Baby, not only do they learn how to take care of an innocent and dependent child from a complete different species, but they also learn how to cope with their own losses and hidden grief, what friendship and family truly mean, and that first impressions deceive.
🐱
What really connected me to the characters and the book itself was the empathetic writing style and the connection to nature. You can literally feel the author's love for animals and nature on every page.
On the other hand, in my humble opinion, the human beings are being presented in a little too critical, harsh way. I do acknowledge that 'our' world is rough and violent and might be very strange, incomprehensible for wild animals. Especially a city like New York.
The ending... Patti, I've had tears in my eyes. I was shocked. Perhaps a little too brutal 🥺 But life is brutal, life is a tough one.
🐸
I recommend this book to every autumn person, animal person, people who love stories with witches and people who want to read something different because I have never read anything like this before. And I loved it 🥰 And the gorgeous, gorgeous illustrations by @xiaostudio17 !
Thank you, dear Patti, for sending your book all over the world to me, for your trust and for our lovely chats. Danke! 🫶🏻
