The Adonis Code

108 cm x 76 cm

Oil on canvas in carved wooden artist’s frame

Part of an ongoing body of work picturing and re-imagining the rites around the Adonia, a summer ritual from ancient Athens in which women would climb onto the rooftops of the city with vessels of planted seeds. The seeds would then germinate, grow and whither on the hottest days of the year, a mysterious act of sacrifice, expenditure, gesture of anti-fertility and satirical speed farming. Needless to say, there’s a lot to unpack, Marcel Detienne has written a great book on it.

Something in the Water — a group exhibition co-curated with @andreas_steinbrecher , presenting new voices in contemporary German painting.

Works by Haein Choi, Lucas Kaiser, Hanna Kuster, Paul DD Smith & Andreas Steinbrecher.

Drawing returns as structure; everyday and iconographic images expand painting into new narrative possibilities—inviting slow looking, memory, and imagination.

Bubble Tile (Museum Island)

Glazed ceramic, 2025.

Part of an ongoing series that blends a number of matte paintings made for a scene in Alfred Hitchcock’s Torn Curtain with Adolf Menzel’s The Iron Rolling Mill (Modern Cyclopes).

In Hitchcock’s film, the interior and exterior of Berlin’s Alte National Gallery is entirely simulated (and mostly invented) because filming was impossible at the location in East Berlin. Menzel’s painting is in the museum’s actual permanent collection and it also graces the cover of the penguin classic English translation of Marx’s Capital Volume 1. by @paul.dd.smith
