🩵🤎 OUT NOW: What was design?—Declarations and definitions from a century of creative quest is a quick starter to one of modernity’s most contested terms. In its brief but meteoric career, “design” was subject to vast controversy. Celebrated as an engine of change, denounced as a driving force of commercialization, and regularly lamented as overused, design remains a concept whose true meaning is still being sought. While answers to the question “What is design?” are constantly shifting, the time has come for a retrospective. This book looks back, presenting a century of design thinking in its most compact form: a collection of bold quotes.

What was design? pits 87 historical one-sentence answers from practitioners, theorists, and philosophers against one another. The result is a web of radical short-form definitions that remain strikingly contradictory in their references. This selection is accompanied by an essay from Florian Walzel, exploring the deeper reasons behind the conceptual ambiguity of design.

This April, What was design? will be presented in Darmstadt at @form.social and in Frankfurt at @projekt_b25, inviting guests to further reflect on the perspectives and definitions of design brought together in the book—in a relaxed setting of conversation and drinks. More informations on our Website.

@slanted_publishers (pub.), Florian Walzel (ed.), @form.social (ed. advisor.), @pauljuer (design), 12 × 19 cm, 152 pages, English, hardcover with round spine, thread-stitching, offset printing with spot colors, ISBN: 978-3-69202-005-1, €26.– (DE)

Dieter Appelt
Gerhard-Altenbourg-Preis 2025

Book design for @kerberverlag and @lindenaumuseumaltenburg

Since the 1960s, Berlin-based artist Dieter Appelt has used photography to confront loss, transience, and the conditions of human existence. Trained as a musician and opera singer, he turned to photography as a way to reconnect with nature, myth, and time. In many of his actions, he used his own body as both subject and material — staging images that oscillate between ritual, endurance, and transformation.

TL 000–200

Two Lines is an experiment that opens up the space of the spoken or written word and the imagination. At the beginning of the year, 200 people received the following instructions by post: "draw on the front side two lines, each a different color, which may touch each other a maximum of one time". The drawing was then uploaded to the website two-lines.online, which was created by the wonderful @luca.meusburgee How do 200 different people interpret the instructions? What image came to mind when they read the instructions and how creatively and differently did they draw the two lines? Each drawing on the postcard can therefore be considered a separate work of art. The title of the work was decided in advance by chance (TL 001-200). But who is the author? The person who drew or the person who gave the instructions? Or is it co-authorship?

As of today, 48 two lines have been uploaded. (So to all those who have received mail but have not yet uploaded their lines: Do it. As of today, the project is open to anyone who wants to take part. However, each number can only be uploaded once.

You want to take part? Then go to two-lines.online, click on upload and download your personal two-lines template. Then print it out, draw on the front side two lines, each a different color, which may touch each other a maximum of one time, and upload it back to the website.

Printed matter for the student conference „Expanding the Reel“ @ma_kuwi @dieangewandte , which was dedicated to the material, physical aspects of expanded film practices. Photochemical, celluloid-based film practices, manual operations on the film material and autogenerative processes were in the foreground.

In addition to the design, I gave a lecture on the topic of „Filme aus dem Nichts - Der Film als produktives Medium am Beispiel von David Gatten What the Water Said, No. 3 (1998)“, which dealt with László Moholy-Nagy’s essay „Production - Reproduction“ and the camera-less film „What the Water Said, No. 3“, which was released more than 75 years later.

Further contributions came from Marius Fischer, Eddie van Gemmern, Matthias Koller, Anna Ebert, Lisa Heuschober, Julia Wiedenmann and a guest lecture by Kim Knowles. by @pauljuer
