Eastwoodhill is a place of evolving beauty, across seasonal changes but sometimes across a single day. Capturing Eastwoodhill in colour and shadow, darkness and light, is Joanna Abraham Joseph, Eastwoodhill's 2026 Artist in Residence. Joanna made her winter visit in August, staying in our accommodation, which allows her ready access to the changing personality and features of the park.

In addition to sketching and painting, she writes about her experiences while at Eastwoodhill. Read below Joanna's piece written during her recent stay.

The Eastwoodhil team are grateful for Joanna's artistry, her commitment to capturing Aotearoa New Zealand's National Arboretum, and sharing that beauty far and wide through her art. We look forward to sharing more of Joanna's work as it evolves. More information about Joanna and her work is linked below.

An Arboretum Winter Walk
By Joanna Abraham Joseph

Deadly calm and frost bitten
Shadow forms lurch around corners and up the sides of unsuspecting trees.
We walk briskly, heading towards the top.
There’s intent in our step as we navigate our way over icy track.
It won’t be long before ice becomes mud following the morning sun
The air is deliciously fresh
The day feels raw and new
Stands of trees born from unfamiliar worlds, bare all in impressive fashion…reaching
Deliberate and direct.
Here it seems the world is a stage…a coherent one
An unguarded, theatrical winter wonderland
On display
For all to see.

presents Glen Hayward at PAULNACHE Booth A06. Step into ‘Better Paul Saul’, Hayward’s installation of hand-carved wooden security cameras and signs — each one a faithful replica of a real camera photographed in cities including London, Austria, Switzerland, Sydney and New York. Carved from wood and paint, these humble objects turn surveillance back on itself, inviting dialogue rather than watching. Join us today @sydneycontemporary to discuss the ideas behind the work, from carving as an ancient form of mark-making to the title’s nod to Saul’s uncertain road to Paul.

Better Paul Saul is an installation of carved and painted wooden security cameras and signs by New Zealand sculptor Glen Hayward, presented by PAULNACHE at Booth A06, Carriageworks, Sydney Contemporary 2026.

Hand-carved from wood and assembled from photographs taken across international destinations — London, Austria, Switzerland, Sydney and New York — these humble objects speak to the oldest of human impulses: carving as proto-writing, mark-making, encounter with material. The work takes its title from a question about conversion: what did Saul leave behind on the road to becoming Paul, and was the uncertainty of those three blind days the more honest revelation?

In his 25+ year career, Hayward’s work has been presented at Sydney Contemporary, UNSW, the Canberra Art Biennial, Spring1883 and Quality, Melbourne. His work is held in private collections across Switzerland, Hong Kong, New York, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand, and in public collections including the Sarjeant Gallery Te Whare o Rehua; Christchurch City Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu; Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki; the Chartwell Collection; the Jim and Mary Barr Collection; the Chris and Charlotte Swasbrook Collection, the Parkin Collection, the Arts House Trust, Auckland and the Cato Collection in Sydney. Hayward has been represented by PAULNACHE since 2013.

After a couple of queries about past posted images, the most common was (paraphrasing) 'what are the blue, blobby sheets on the wall?'. When I got to Aotearoa, @Paulnache and I got talking about the presentation of the show - with the focus on the painterly and the survey-like narrative, we thought it would be a good idea to have extended labels. Not wanting to have it too museumy, we thought hand painted labels might work. I set to work painting them with not much preparation (and luckily not too many spelling mistakes or grammatical errors) over a couple of days before the my two exhibition openings which where a day apart. The labels give a personal recollection of how the series or works came about and often, how they related to either Aotearoa/New Zealand, the USA or, in regards to the #Isolationpaintings, both locations. Now that I'm back in the States, I'm regrouping and getting a chance to look over the exhibition and artworks in the show that go back to 1999. It's been a fun, energetic and lucrative 20 years with #paulnache and it was great to celebrate the milestone with this gathering of artworks. The labels are now being rewritten to be included in a possible publication and other exhibition opportunities. Big thanks to PN for scanning these as I forgot to get images of these before I left! taken in Paul Nache Gallery by @paulnache

This stunning composition created with oil and gold on panel painted @matthew_couper_studio #lasvegas entitled ’Boat Ride (S-104, Pg 202, Nakov)’ is now part of a unique private collection📍in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Art history has long invested blue with extraordinary weight. Ultramarine, ground from Afghan lapis lazuli, once carried the prestige of gold, allowing painters such as Giotto to transform the heavens into something tangible yet unreachable. Couper inherits none of that reverence directly, but he understands blue’s peculiar ability to hold contradiction: beauty and melancholy, abundance and absence, permanence and loss. See paulnache.com for more details and available works.
