I had a list of 10 celebrities to do impressions of and gave it to someone in the audience to yell them out so I could do them quickly.

Sit. Stay. Be an ally.

I swear the Bone Dry mic at Last Best Comedy is one of the best open mic nights in the country to work out material. 💪 🎤

I wish more comedians understood this…

One of my least favorite things as an audience member is being asked to cheer every 30 seconds.

“Give it up for the host!”
“How’s everybody doing?”
“Give it up one more time!”
“Let me hear you!”

Eventually I’m like, I came here for you to make me feel good. Stop giving me assignments. 😂

But there’s a bigger lesson in there too.

The audience wants to feel like the person onstage is in control.

They don’t want to be sitting there thinking, Oh no. Is he nervous? Should we help him? Is this going badly?

Because once the audience starts getting nervous on your behalf, everybody feels it.

That doesn’t mean you have to be fearless. Most performers are nervous.

It means you learn how to walk out there and communicate: I’ve got this. You can relax.

Then tell the joke.

One of the funniest things about doing a short set is how little time you actually have to waste.

If you’ve only got five minutes — or one minute, Kill Tony style — you don’t really have time for:

“Hey guys, how are you?”
“Good to be here.”
“Beautiful city.”
You need to hit, hit, hit, hit, hit…and get out. 😂

Leah and I were talking about how many comics burn precious time warming up a crowd that is already warm.

And sometimes the best move really is just:

Tell the joke.

That’s easier said than done, because my instinct is still to walk out and go, “Hey guys, how we doing?”

Apparently I care very deeply about everyone’s wellbeing right before I tell them jokes. 😂

I would genuinely rather perform in front of 10,000 strangers than 10 people I know. 😂

There’s something weirdly freeing about a room full of people who have no history with you.

I can get onstage, be whatever version of myself I need to be for the joke, and just perform.

But the second I see friends or family in the crowd, part of my brain starts going:

They’ve heard this joke before.
They know the real story.
They know I’m exaggerating this.
I have to see these people again tomorrow.

Very relaxing.

Leah nailed it in this conversation: a stranger’s opinion is pretty inconsequential. Your family? Unfortunately, they remain in your life. 😂

It’s one of those bizarre things about performing that sounds backwards until you’ve experienced it.

I did my first vlog on Laugh or Death. 🎥

Instead of sitting in the studio talking about comedy, I brought you along for the actual thing.

I got asked last minute to do a set at Pine Creek Lodge opening for Wolves of Glendale, so I figured: why not show you what the whole night actually looks like?

The venue, the pre-show nerves, trying out new jokes, figuring out how an outdoor crowd changes the energy, the post-show breakdown with my friend and comedian Leah Tiscione, and then the part nobody really sees when I finally get home and start replaying the entire set in my head. 😂

This night was especially interesting because outdoor comedy is just different. You want people close together because laughter spreads. When everybody’s scattered around, you have to work a little harder to create that shared energy.

But honestly, that became part of what I liked about this episode.

It wasn’t a perfect setup. It wasn’t some polished comedy special. It was just a real night of doing stand-up, trying new stuff, figuring it out as we went, and having fun.

One of my favorite things Noah does onstage happens before he’s even gotten to the joke.

He’ll mention that he has a stutter, somebody in the crowd will laugh, and Noah immediately goes: “Why are you laughing already? I haven’t even said a joke yet.” 😂

And for a second, the whole room gets tense.

But instead of ignoring it, Noah leans directly into the awkwardness. He acknowledges what just happened, gets everybody laughing with him, and then moves on with the show.

That’s such a great comedy skill.

Sometimes the best way to deal with tension in a room isn’t to pretend it isn’t there. It’s to point at it, play with it, and let everybody know:
We’re good. Now let’s have some fun.
