On Saturday I asked my best friend to marry me and she said yes. 🤩 Here is a before and after picture, Julie had no idea and it was a great surprise.

Also pictured is the sculpture I made to commemorate the occasion, two interlocked iron rings.

Julie and I met at @sculpturetrails doing what we love so it only felt fitting to see if she’d pour with me for life. I love you @fishbowlsoul_ and I can’t wait to see where our adventure takes us next.

And a HUGE thank you to @sculpturetrails and the interns for keeping the secret and helping me pull off something incredible!!

One wonderful year!

Happy anniversary Julie, what a year it has been. I am so thankful to have everyday with you. Backyard metal pours, traveling for sculpture and music, and buying a house, I can’t wait to see all that we can accomplish next year.

A little backbone for your baking. 🦴

@paulrobertwatson made this one-of-a-kind spine measuring cup set, with an iron spine holding together a series of aluminum vertebrae, each one doubling as a functional measuring cup.

Because apparently even your kitchen tools deserve a skeleton.

Featured Art Friday! @paulrobertwatson shares why he creates his life-size skeletal metal and concrete figures:

“‘Reconstruction’ and ‘JR’ were the first life-size pieces I ever made. Each one represented a moment stuck in time that helped me place feelings and work through things I couldn’t quite figure out. I was living in Boston at the time and was inspired by these giant retaining walls that ‘bellied out,’ revealing rebar infrastructure and an impossible weight behind them, shifting slowly through time.

I can’t wait to have a shop space that will allow me to get back to making pieces this size. I have the components for three from over the last few years. As we make progress on our dream of opening a foundry, it feels like a perfect time to bring more of these sculptures to life.”

✨ Featured Art Friday!

This week's featured piece is one of @paulrobertwatson 's incredible hand lamps and this version is cast in iron.

Each lamp begins with a real hand cast with alginate, then is transformed into metal in the foundry. The result is both functional and sculptural, with the light bulb glowing from the center of the open hand.

It's one of those pieces that always gets people talking.

Featured art Friday! "'Consume' was made during a time when it felt hard to make time for myself. The whole piece was made in a single block of resin sand, using tubing as a means to bind the other iron elements together. In Asheville, sculptures begin their lives in sunlit studios and crowded workshops. But when it comes time to cast them, they’re boxed up and shipped away, finished in foundries miles from where they were conceived. Without a local foundry, the city’s sculptors have had to work within limits, both practical and creative.

Julie Slattery and Paul Watson are about to change that. The two are hard at work creating Asheville’s first fine art foundry, Molten Made, set to open to the public this fall in the River Arts District (RAD). They first met at an iron casting workshop at the Sculpture Trails Outdoor Museum in Solsberry, Indiana, where Paul was a resident artist and tour guide. It was a match made in metal casting heaven: Julie soon began volunteering at the museum, and before long, they were living together in a one-room cabin in the middle of the sculpture park.
