#OnThisDay, 11 years ago today, Stephen Curry dropped 53 points to push the defending champion Warriors to 3-0, in a Halloween win in New Orleans. This performance came a few days after Curry dropped 40 on the Pelicans to start the season. He had 28 points in the 3rd quarter alone, single-handedly outscoring the Pelicans alone, and also set a new career high for points in a quarter. He finished the game 17-27 plus 9 assists and 4 steals. Curry was averaging 40 PPG on the season. Draymond Green was asked after the game about the way Curry was playing: “He’s getting to the hole a lot better, picking and choosing his spots when to go. He’s turning the corner like crazy
Most importantly, I said it on the court to him, I said, `Man, you’re acting like this is your league.’” (October 31, 2015) Final score: Warriors 134, Pelicans 120 Curry: 53 points | 9 assists | 4 steals | +16 | 8 3PM AD: 26 points | 15 rebounds | 4 assists Jrue: 22 points | 6 assists Draymond: 21 points Klay: 19 points Iggy: 8 points | 7 rebounds by @pausedeye
#OnThisDay, 10 years ago today, the Patriots win their 4th straight game since Tom Brady returned from his Deflategate suspension to improve to 7-1 against the Buffalo Bills. This was Brady’s 26th time beating the Bills, and he would retire with a record of 33-3 against them all time. The Bills beat the Patriots without Brady earlier in week 4 of this season to give them their first loss after there was a pregame fight between both teams. That week 4 game was the first time the Patriots were shutout at home since 1993. Brady threw 4 touchdowns, 1 of them being a bomb to Chris Hogan over future HOF cornerback Stephon Gillmore. Rob Gronkowski also caught a long touchdown in this game, breaking Stanley Morgan’s franchise TD record with his 69th TD. Patriots scored 27 points on 5 straight drives, converted 9/13 third downs, and punted only 3 times. The Patriots headed into their bye week in complete control of the AFC, with the reigning champion Broncos in disarray. Brady: 330 total yards | 4 TD | 137 passer rating Gronk: 5 receptions | 109 yards | 1 TD Hogan: 4 catches | 91 yards | 1 TD by @pausedeye
#OnThisDay, 11 years ago today, reigning MVP and Finals champion Stephen Curry drops 40 points on the Pelicans, to kick start the upcoming historic 73-9 Warriors season. The NBA scheduled the Pelicans to open the season @ Oracle Arena as a playoff rematch from the year prior between two superstars in Curry & Anthony Davis, despite the fact Golden State swept New Orleans on route to their chip. Luke Walton coached this game for the Warriors due to Steve Kerr undergoing surgery on his back. Curry hit 7 of his 9 first shots and finished the 1st quarter with 24 points and instantly put to bed narratives against him from the summer since he did not win Finals MVP. He finished with 40, scoring the most points by a reigning MVP in season opener since Kareem Abdul Jabaar. No other Warriors player scored over 13 points, yet the game was over in the 3rd quarter. Alvin Gentry, former Warriors coach from their 2015 championship now the head coach of the Pelicans stated: “It didn’t matter who was out there
that’s just who Steph is.” Chris Sager gave Curry the postgame interview in his last season working with the NBA. (Slide 3) Curry: 40 points | 14-26 FG | 7 assists | 6 rebounds Klay: 9 points | 7 turnovers | 5 fouls | 3-8 FG Draymond: 10 points | 5 fouls | 3-12 FG Barnes: 8 points | 3-12 FG | 3 fouls Anthony Davis: 18 points | 4-20 FG | 5 turnovers Eric Gordon: 14 points | 5-17 FG | 4 turnovers Kendrick Perkins: 10 points | 5-5 FG Ish Smith: 17 points | 7-13 FG by @pausedeye
#OnThisDay, 8 years ago today, Stephen Curry dropped 51 points with 11 3’s made in only 3 quarters in a blowout win against the Wizards. He passed Jamal Crawford and moved into 5th place on the all time 3’s made list, as well as recording his 22nd career 20+ points quarter. He had 31 in the first half, and this 51 point explosion would be the highest he ever ended up scoring at Oracle Arena. This was the last time the Wizards would ever play a basketball game at that arena. Curry made 11 of the Warriors 15 3’s in the game; and made 1 less 3 than the entire Wizards team that night, who shot 12-42. Bradley Beal was asked after the game how to stop Curry when he’s in the zone, to which he replied, “Foul the shit out of him.” The Warriors honored the 1975 Warriors championship team that night, who ended up sweeping the Washington Bullets. The Warriors wore those throwback jerseys to pay homage. (October 24th, 2018) Curry: 51 points | 15-24 FG | 11-16 3PT | 10/10 FT | 1 block KD: 30 points | 13-18 FG | 8 rebounds | 7 assists | +26 Beal: 23 points | 10-15 FG | 19 minutes played Klay: 19 points | 8-17 FG Wall: 13 points | 5-12 FG | 4 turnovers Draymond: 5 points | 12 assists by @pausedeye
#OnThisDay, 7 years ago today, Kyrie Irving dropped 50 points in his first game as a Brooklyn Nets player, setting an NBA record for most points in a debut. This was the first official game Kyrie played since leaving the Celtics and he was greeted to a rabid Brooklyn crowd excited to welcome a hometown kid to their team. After carrying them the entire game, the game came down to Kyrie having the chance to win the game. He slipped on a drive, managed to get back on his feet and put the ball on the rim, but was unable to make what would’ve been one of the greatest game winners ever. (Slide 3) The Nets end up losing 127-126 to the Timberwolves behind Karl Anthony Towns dropping 36 points & 14 rebounds. Kyrie finished with 50 points and 7 assists on 0 turnovers in the game. Jeff Teague was quoted saying “I made Okogie guard him at the end, that’s how fried I was. I subbed myself out.” (October 23, 2019) by @pausedeye
#OnThisDay, 2 years ago today, Jayson Tatum drops 37 points in a blowout win against the Knicks on Banner 18 celebration night for Boston. He made eight 3’s, and the Celtics tied the NBA record for most 3’s made in a single game. The Knicks were touted in the offseason as the biggest threat to the Celtics in the East in the offseason, and this was the first regular season game Mikal Bridges & Karl Anthony Towns played for them after New York sent away 7 first round picks a few months before to acquire the pair. Despite this, only Brunson & McBride managed to score over 20 points for the Knicks this game, while Jaylen Brown & Derrick White each had 20 to compliment Tatum’s 37. The Celtics title defense was off to a roaring start, & it seemed as if the team would have no trouble at least getting out the East for the 3rd time in 4 years (October 22nd, 2024) Tatum: 37 points | 10 assists | 14-18 FG | 8-11 3PT | 2 stocks White: 24 points | 8-13 FG | 4-6 3PT Brown: 23 points | 7 rebounds | 5-9 3PT Brunson: 22 points | 9-14 FG | 4 turnovers | -23 McBride: 22 points | 8-10 FG | 4-5 3PT | -18 Jrue: 18 points | 7-9 FG | 4-6 3PT | +23 Mikal: 16 points | 7-13 FG | -33 KAT: 12 points | 7 rebounds | -18 OG: 4 points | 1-7 FG | -21 by @pausedeye
#OnThisDay, 8 years ago today, the Patriots held on for dear life but beat the eventual NFC North champions in Chicago to improve to 5-2. In this game, Cordarelle Patterson fumbled a kickoff return that immediately led to a Mitch Trubisky TD (Slide 1) Then on the next Patriots drive, Sony Michel fumbled, which the Bears responded to with another TD. From up 7-3 to down 7-17 in 5 minutes, momentum had completely flipped, until Cordaralle Patterson took the immediate next kickoff to the crib for a TD. (Slide 2) The Patriots eventually took a 38-24 lead with 5 minutes left, & Trubisky got them a quick score, while the defense stopped the Patriots to give the Bears one last chance. While getting hit, Trubisky fired a bomb to Kevin White, who CAUGHT the Hail Mary, but the Pats were able to rally to the ball and hold Chicago’s comeback a yard short. (Slide 3-5) Tom Brady after the game he was holding his breath during the play, and wasn’t sure if White had scored or not due to being at a bad angle. Both teams went on to win their divisions, with Chicago losing to the reigning Super Bowl champion Eagles on the “Double Doink”, while New England captured their 6th world championship in February 2019. (October 21st, 2018) Tom Brady: 25/36 | 283 yards | 3 TDs | 1 INT Josh Gordon: 4 catches | 100 yards James White: 8 catches | 57 yards | 2 TDs Mitch Trubisky: 26/50 | 414 yards | 3 TDs | 2 INT Jonathan Jones: 1 INT JC Jackson: 1 INT Kyle Fuller: 5 tackles | 2 PD | 1 INT Kyle Van Noy: 6 tackles, 1 TD by @pausedeye

#OnThisDay, 6 years ago, the Denver Nuggets kept their season alive in the 2020 Western Conference Finals by winning Game 3 to make the series 2-1 in favor of the Lakers. The Nuggets were coming off of a heartbreaking Game 2 loss, where Anthony Davis hit a game winner at the buzzer to give LA a 105-103 win. In this game, Jamal Murray, Nikola Jokic, & Jerami Grant combined for 76 points, 21 rebounds, & 18 assists to make sure the Nuggets didn’t squander away another opportunity. The Lakers cut a 20 point deficit to 4 in the 4th quarter, but Murray put them to bed with two 3’s in the last minute of the game. Nuggets coach Michael Malone after the game stated, “I don’t know why we love this bubble.” while Jamal Murray claimed that he believed the Nuggets should be up 2-1 in the series. #OnThisDay, 6 years ago, Jayson Tatum & Jaylen Brown combined for 51 points, 21 rebounds, & 13 assists to keep the Celtics season alive in Game 3 of the 2020 Eastern Conference Finals. Boston improved to 20-3 on the season when both Tatum and Brown scored at least 20. “We could have come in here and laid down, or we could have played like we were fighting for our lives.” - Tatum postgame The Celtics had blown a double digit lead in the 4th quarter of both the previous games, but were able to close it out this time. Gordon Hayward returned from his ankle sprain in August for the first time & dropped 6 points. Tyler Herro scored 16 points in the 2nd quarter alone to keep Miami in it, however contributions from Marcus Smart & Kemba Walker were enough to put the Heat’s last second comeback to bed. The pressure is now on the Heat to not squander this series lead, as they have been outplayed by the Celtics in 9/12 quarters so far in the series. #OnThisDay, 6 years ago, the Celtics-Heat rivalry was renewed in the 2020 Eastern Conference Finals. Jayson Tatum & Jimmy Butler were both announced as All-NBA players the day of the game, with the Celtics favored to win the series and face the Lakers in the finals. The Celtics were up 14 with 11:25 left in the 4th quarter, but thanks to Jimmy Butler scoring 14 points in the 4th quarter & OT, as well as an all time block from Bam Adebayo, the Heat would escape with the win. The Celtics had been 156-1 when leading a playoff game by at least 12+ points in the 4th. Kemba Walker placed the Celtics up 1 in OT, yet Jimmy Butler responded on the other end with an And-One. This would be the first of many down to the wire games between Boston & Miami in the next 4 years. Outside of the Nuggets & Timberwolves, the NBA has not had a rivalry in the 2020’s even close to this.
