X, page by page.

Six minutes with the book in hand: the silver papers catching and losing the light, the handmade black sheets, and Cody-Rose Clevidence's poem By Gaze, written in silver ink. A book like this doesn't show itself in a single photograph. It has to move.

Bound by Rory Sparks. Edition of 10. More at paulthulin.com, link in bio. by @pbthulin

X is out!

These photographs have always carried a particular energy for me: restless, dense, electric. Somehow they always brought me back to Squarepusher’s Music Is Rotted One Note, a record where jazz and electronica run into each other and the rules break open into something new. That’s what X feels like to me. A landscape with no vista, no place outside it to stand, all tangle and charge.

Of course, there’s a whole lot of deeper thinking underneath all this too. Hit me up and we can talk about it 🙂

Cody-Rose Clevidence’s poem By Gaze moves through the book in their own hand, in silver ink that brightens and fades as the page tilts. It sits beside the photographs as kin, not caption.

Designed with Rory Sparks, who bound it by hand. Section-sewn, 126 pages, 80 photographs, nine poem plates on metallic and handmade papers. X is a collector’s object in an edition of 10, made primarily for special collections and institutions. Acquisition details on request.

My deep thanks to Rory Sparks, whose care and skill turned this into an object I could only have imagined. And to Cody-Rose Clevidence: I think the world of your poems and the way you see the world. Thank you for collaborating with me on this. A special copy is on its way to you soon. If you don’t know Cody-Rose’s writing yet, go find their newest book, This Household of Earthly Nature, from Roof Books.

X is also why I rebuilt my website, so go take a look: the book, first looks at Sol y Sombra and Guasábara, and an Index of the ideas, books, films and music behind the work. Link in bio. by @pbthulin

At least once a week at night I wake up to this vision peering at me from our closet which induces pure panic and what feels like a mild heart attack. One night I need to say hello. by @pbthulin
