Keeping your distance from seals means paying attention to the space between you and how the animals respond to your presence.

Be aware at 100m and keep at least 50m away, unless a seal approaches you. The distance at which seals become agitated can vary, so some animals may need more space.

If you’re watching from the coast path, binoculars or a long camera lens can give you a much better view without moving closer.

Watch the seals’ behaviour while you observe them. If a seal becomes alert or reacts to your presence, move further away and give it more room.

A quiet approach can make a big difference when seals are resting on beaches and rocks.

Noise can disturb hauled-out seals, so keep voices and other sound low and avoid lingering nearby. The Pembrokeshire Marine Code recommends limiting viewing time to 10 minutes.

Watch the seals while you’re there. If they become alert or change their behaviour because of your presence, move away slowly and give them more space.

Keeping encounters quiet and brief helps seals use their haul-out areas without unnecessary disturbance.

The first few weeks of a grey seal pup’s life are incredibly important.

Pups can treble their birth weight in around three weeks, relying on their mothers for the milk and energy they need before becoming independent. Mothers may come ashore several times a day to feed their pups.

If you see a mother and pup apart, keep well back and leave the space between them clear. Avoid walking, stopping or gathering where you could make it harder for them to come back together.

Giving them space helps those vital feeds continue without unnecessary disturbance.

Pembrokeshire’s quieter beaches and coves can be important places for grey seals to rest and raise their pups at this time of year.

If you come across seals using a beach, give the whole area plenty of space. Do not land on pupping beaches from 1 August to the end of November, and avoid disturbing mothers nursing pups.

Keeping these places calm gives mothers and pups the quiet space they need during this sensitive part of the breeding season.

👋 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗣𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗼𝗸𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗲
Yesterday we welcomed 35 BSc Environmental Management students from the @uniofreading for a morning exploring the opportunities and challenges facing Pembrokeshire’s coast.

We started at Hobbs Point, looking out across the Cleddau and using the landscape around us to discuss how industry, the natural environment, tourism and coastal communities all interact within the same system.

The group heard about the breadth of Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum's work, including marine renewable energy through Marine Energy Wales and the Marine Energy Test Area (META), climate adaptation, sustainable recreation and the Pembrokeshire Outdoor Health Project.

They also heard from @thecrownestate Marine Futures interns Sophie and Arwen, who shared their experiences and perspectives on their work with us.

It was a brilliant group, with plenty of thoughtful questions and discussion throughout the morning. Visits like this give the students a chance to explore what integrated coastal management looks like in practice, and how collaboration across communities, industry, research and the environment can help address some of the pressures facing our coast.

Thanks to Professor Julian Park and team for joining us again. We hope the visit helped set the scene for the rest of your week in Pembrokeshire.

If you spot seals resting or pupping along the Pembrokeshire coast, use your camera zoom rather than moving closer for the shot.

Be aware at 100m and keep at least 50m away, unless a seal approaches you. Avoid creeping up on seals and watch their behaviour – if they react to your presence, give them more space.

Enjoy the moment from a distance and let the wildlife stay wild.
