Had so much fun creating this dish towel. When i saw the #ChloeBlanket pattern by @melissa_made_that , I knew I needed to use it! She had a great idea book that showed the towel. I’ve never thought about making a towel from a blanket pattern.

Started in a new book club with fellow book readers and crochet lovers. The idea from @bookishhookers is to read a book or two (or more) a month, and using a specific pattern, create a square using the colors off of the cover. Today’s a very special day in the Felter house! This guy is retiring and today is his last day of “work”. I could not be more proud of him and the way he leads our family with love, wisdom and fun. Had fun making this little blanket for a new baby girl. Sometimes you just need a light layer for the stroller or car seat. Love how the striped yarn came together for the border. A cornerstone of friendship and community, the simple act of "hanging out"/"chilling" is quietly fading from our lives.

What was once spontaneous and unstructured meeting up with friends just to be... has given way to tightly scheduled outings, curated experiences, and digital interactions.

The casual hangout, with no agenda and no purpose beyond enjoying one another's presence, is becoming rare, have you noticed?

There are a few culprits. Technology is the most obvious. With constant connection through phones and social media, we've convinced ourselves that a group chat is the same as sitting on a porch.

Algorithms can mimic conversation, but they can't replicate the shared silence, the inside jokes born from nothing, or the comfort of simply being with someone without performing. Whenever I think of my greatest hangouts, half of them were filled with comfortable silence.

Capitalism plays its part too in this process. Time is money. Everyone's hustling, optimizing, side-gigging. "Doing nothing" now feels wasteful, indulgent even.
The idea of hanging out without a goal or no content to make, no networking to do, no productivity to chase seems almost outdated. People still gather, sure, but it's often framed as "going out," "catching up," or some event that justifies the interaction.

But we lose something when we stop hanging out for no reason. That kind of unstructured time is where real intimacy grows where trust is built in the space between conversations, not just within them. Hanging out is a declaration that someone's presence is enough. No performance necessary. Just you, me, and time to kill.
