What is the human impact when you try to erase a civilization?

“A Message to Humanity”, the powerful exhibition honouring 2024 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Nihon Hidankyo, answers that question.

The Hibakusha - atomic bomb survivors - share their testimonies, describing the devastating reality of what happens when a city is wiped out, and offering a crucial and timely reminder to the world.

Peace Boat has sailed for a year with the “A Message to Humanity” outreach edition of the Nobel Peace Center’s original exhibition. Students, school groups, community organizations, activists, and politicians from five continents have come onboard to see the extraordinary portraits by @antoinedagata, and hear the vital message of the Hibakusha.

Thank you to everyone who has visited “A Message to Humanity” on Peace Boat! Please spread the word and push for a world without nuclear weapons. @nuclearban.

Peace Boat will sail for six further voyages with “A Message to Humanity”. We hope to see you somewhere around the world!

@nuclearban

To mark eighty years since the end of World War II, Peace Boat's 120th Global Voyage carried out a project titled “Time for Peace.” Rooted in Peace Boat’s founding philosophy of reflecting on the past to shape a peaceful future, the initiative aimed to amplify the voices of those impacted by war, past and present. It connected individuals and organizations dedicated to peacebuilding and conflict prevention around the globe.

This video is a summary of voices and experiences shared during these three months at sea, between April 23 and August 7, 2025.

🌏 80 Years On – Time for Peace 🕊️

This year marks 80 years since the end of World War II, the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and for many Asian nations, liberation from Japanese colonial rule. As we reflect on these milestones, Peace Boat reaffirms our commitment to a world free of nuclear weapons, an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, and urgent action on today’s global crises—from war and international law violations to the climate crisis. Together, let’s choose peace over force, cooperation over division, and a sustainable future for all.

🎥 Through this video, hear insights from speakers at the August 10 “Time for Peace” event, co-hosted by Peace Boat and the UN Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai, bringing voices together to reflect on 80 years since the end of World War II and foundation of the United Nations.

Peace Boat Congratulates Navi Pillay on the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize!

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem "Navi" Pillay on being awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, and commend the Norwegian Nobel Committee for its timely and historic decision.

The world today stands on the brink of an unprecedented crisis in the rule of law. The hostility and suppression directed by major powers toward the International Criminal Court (ICC) are a stark symbol of this reality. In a world that possesses enough nuclear weapons to destroy itself multiple times over, collapse of the rule of law would signify the potential destruction and extinction of humanity and global society itself.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee's choice serves as an earnest and frank warning to humanity in the face of this crisis. It is time for us to listen intently to this warning, share a profound sense of urgency across borders, and dedicate all possible efforts to consolidating the rule of law rather than the rule of force.

Achieving peace without relying on military force and building a sustainable society through international solidarity is indeed possible. However, the establishment and enforcement of a universal legal order is indispensable to achieving that end.

As members of international civil society, we hold firmly in our memory the words of Jørgen Watne Frydnes, Chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee: "Whenever might overtakes right, it undermines stability, trust and peaceful co-existence."

We remember that Navi Pillay in an international tribunal recognized violence against women during wartime as a crime against humanity, and that the UN committee she led explicitly recognized the killings in Gaza by Israeli occupying forces as genocide.

We will continue to carry out cross-border solidarity in support of Navi Pillay and all those within the United Nations and international bodies such as the ICC and ICJ who lead efforts to achieve peace and justice under the rule of law.

🌍🕊️ What really makes us safer?

As part of the Global Week of Action for Peace and Climate Justice, participants onboard Peace Boat joined a day of learning and action exploring the connections between the climate emergency, peace and demilitarisation.

Held on the International Day of Peace, the programme began with ABC of Climate Change, looking at what climate change is and why it is happening. This was followed by the workshop For a Sustainable Future, exploring what we can do as individuals and what we must press governments and companies to do.

The final lecture, What Makes Us Safer?, introduced climate justice and militarism, examining how military activity and rising military expenditure contribute to emissions and environmental destruction while diverting resources away from climate action and resilient communities.

The day concluded with a photo action on the top deck, joining actions taking place around the world during the Global Week and carrying the message:

📢 Demilitarise for Climate Justice

Peace Boat is one of the organizations coordinating the Global Week of Action for Peace and Climate Justice.

Last week, Peace Boat US, in collaboration with Blue Planet Alliance and Welch International, hosted the New York Innovation Forum for Sustainable Development during a pivotal week for global dialogue. 🌍🌊

The forum brought together voices from civil society, conservation, business, technology, finance, and policy to exchange ideas and strengthen partnerships for ocean and climate action. The conversations centered on a shared question: how can we turn innovation and collaboration into solutions that reach communities and advance the Sustainable Development Goals?

Meaningful progress takes people working across sectors and borders. We’re grateful to everyone who contributed their perspectives, made new connections, and helped carry these conversations forward. 💙

At this year’s Climate Impact Talks, powered by Blue Planet Alliance, we presented Peace Boat’s Ecoship, sailing for a 100% Renewable energy future.

Peace Boat’s Ecoship ⚓️🛳️⚓️

Established in 1983, Peace Boat is an international NGO in Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, and a committed campaigner for the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Working in partnership with the UN SDG Action Campaign, Peace Boat carries out its main activities through a passenger ship that travels the world to promote a culture of peace and sustainability.

Ecoship is Peace Boat’s project to build the world’s most sustainable cruise ship as a transition model for decarbonizing the maritime sector. Our commitment to a carbon reduction of 30% is in line with the targets set by the Paris Agreement and subsequently by the UN International Maritime Organization in its initial strategy. Ecoship’s eco features include solar sails reducing CO2 and more than 6,000 sqm of installed solar panels covering 100% of the lighting needs, batteries to reduce emissions in ports, an onboard lab equipped to conduct ocean research as we sail around the world as well as a 6-story soaring green space.

The event also included a new Peace Boat documentary debut by Ari Beser.
