For physicians and hc providers, use the overturning of Roe as an opportunity to assess your orientation to the state.

Decide: what are your ethics, what laws do you believe to be just
The abortion fight is now your fight, whether you chose it or not. The court’s opinion puts you, as a physician, with the women who will suffer most, in the crosshairs. You can ignore that positioning, and move forward under the guise that this will not affect you and the practice of medicine, or, you can get ready.

One way of getting ready is getting clear. Get clear on what you would risk - would you refuse to turn in a woman who had an abortion to the authorities? would you prescribe misoprostol to a pregnant child who wanted it? Would you insist on giving standard practice chemotherapy to a pregnant cancer patient even if it could harm the fetus?

Get clear now on what you would risk, so that, when the time comes, you’ll be ready.

Medicine has often become the state’s tool in the worst circumstances - immediately what comes to mind is Tuskegee and doctors facilitating the torture sessions at Guantanamo - but the promise of medicine is also the promise of somehow resisting the state’s determination of whose lives are worth protecting.
For the court will not be there when a pregnant patient is in a hypertensive crisis or when a fallopian tube bursts - you will. Get oriented, get clear. Quite literally, the blood will be on your hands - in one of the worst and most twisted abstractions that emerges from this- the 6 people who decided that this outcome was best will be unstained. It’s now your carnage to manage, your patients’ lives to lose. by @pearlkap

Abortion is healthcare. Abortion is normal. Women have and will continue to have abortions. Abortion is ancient. If this is unsettling to you, look around. There is a truth you are not seeing: 1 in 4 women will have an abortion in their lifetime. 1 in 4. As a future physician, I stand today with women, with abortion providers, with abortion funds, and with the POC led abortion action networks that in the past, now and in the future will get women the care they need. This fight is not over. Abortion care will continue. by @pearlkap
