It’s hard to believe it’s been 3 years since we started BYOV. What an honor it’s been to host and teach, but also learn and grow as a DJ. It’s such a wonderful part of my week and I’m so glad to have the opportunity to share so many wonderful memories with everyone. This weeks BYOV will mark the 3rd anniversary of our start and I will start an extra hour early to help accommodate any extra time for people to spin. I hope you’ll join us in the celebration and come spin some records. I want to thank anyone who has ever come out to spin with us, it wouldn’t be an open decks without all of you.

What an August it’s been.

I feel like this month is always such a rollercoaster for me. So many emotions and feelings come to pass for me marking new beginnings and old ends. It feels like summer just started and I’m grasping desperately to hold on to savor every last moment.

So much happening and yet so many quiet personal moments. The dichotomy of it all is what makes it feel so special to me. A time of self reflection and introspection and a time of outgoing celebration, and I fall somewhere in the middle.

I look forward to fall, as bittersweet as it always is. I welcome the passage of time and the changing of the seasons. taken in Lake Michigan by @pedromeadowz

August 29th 2014 is a date I will carry the rest of my life. I wrote this song shortly after (and before) and it was the last song I wrote for years. I went from playing music every day to maybe a few times a month. So many of those years have turned into a blur.

My mom was always the one person who ever encouraged me to write music. Through every one of life’s disappoints she always was the optimism to counter my cynicism. When she died a part of me died too. It wasn’t until the 10 year anniversary of her passing that I really started to feel able to really process it. I still don’t feel I fully have.

I don’t play this song often. Maybe once or twice a year on those milestones that force me to remember. I wanted to post this yesterday but it seems, even now, there is never enough time.

I wish I had more pictures of us on my phone. They are buried in the countless boxes of photo albums somewhere in my basement. I tell myself I’ll go through and digitize them, maybe one day I will. But I wanted to take today and remember my mom and share that love in some sort of tangible way.

I spent the day on Belle isle swimming and playing guitar. It felt like a proper tribute. Thinking about all the things in my life I love because she taught me too. Like hammocks, and swimming, traveling, and of course the sun.

We carry the ones we love with us wherever we go. I cherish all the memories we had. 12 years went by far too quick. I wish you could see the life I’m living. I wish we could share a laugh, a meal, an adventure, hell even one of those dumb senseless arguments we would always have, because I am just as stubborn as you. What I wouldn’t give to just smoke a joint together and say I love you.

Time marches on, but I’ll never forget.

What can I even say. This is my third Underwater Clown Rodeo and it gets more magical every year. I have to really give Alyssa props because to dream this magical event up and make it a reality that just keeps growing year after year is truly an amazing thing to behold. What a way to celebrate all the Leo’s out there and just provide a good time for everyone to have fun. The vibes this year were immaculate and I am still riding the high from last night. I’ll be eagerly awaiting my time to clown in the underwater rodeo again next year.

Another year older and so much to show for it. It’s easy to get caught up in the minutia of it all. Being so busy one second that you just want time to catch your breath, and then before you know it you’re lazing about wondering why you’re not doing more with your time. What I’ve found in my 37 years on this planet is that no matter what I’m doing I’ll always want to push myself a bit further. My life has had so many moments of profound meaning and serene beauty that make time stand still and linger a little longer. Those deep breathes of fresh air that wash over you and make you feel like your whole life has been leading to that moment and you belong to this place and time and always will. And just as quickly as it comes it slips away, receding into the annals of memory.

August is my favorite month of the year, and yes I may have some bias as a Leo, but I also love the solemn sadness of it. Summer is setting, the days start to feel noticeably shorter, the sun takes on a golden glow as it sets. The first color in the leaves starts to peak through, as autumn creeps into the air.

There is more summer ahead and I have much to look forward to still, but I wanted to take a moment and reflect on the last year and even more specifically the last month or so when these pictures were taken and express gratitude for making it another rotation around the sun. Happy Leo season and may 37 be another wonderful revolution through the cosmos. by @pedromeadowz
