The greatest decision you could ever make as a coach who:

Has the book knowledge…
Has put in the hours…
But has yet to feel at relative peace for the first time…

is to devote greater appreciation towards your own unique experiences, and understanding how those things shaped your unique outlook on not just performance but the human experience in its entirety.

While being severely uncomfortable in your early years as you grow and develop is 1000% required and necessary, there comes a point where the discomfort and pain of never feeling good enough becomes a massive hindrance.

Be weary of the next best thing. You have yet to even grasp your own behaviors and understand at the most fundamental levels why it is that you believe what you believe.

Incredibly blessed, honored and forever indebted to @timrileytraining @zack_zillner @coachemuppodcast for having me speak at this year’s conference. What an opportunity it was to teach something important to me and meet great people. by @pedullaperformance

Changing the trajectory of an athlete’s career, getting continued results, winning championships, and saving yourself time are all possible at the same time and can coexist.

Step 1 is understanding how your brain actually functions best and fully grasping how you think and how these things impact the programs and coaching you deliver. by @pedullaperformance

Strength coaches like to do things that feel like progress, like consuming one resource after another before they’ve finished processing and applying the previous one.

I’m not saying education is a waste of time. It’s a big deal, but it’s one piece of the puzzle.

The largest improvements are made when you decide to iterate, update, and reframe knowledge and ideas that already exist in your brain, and this separates great coaches from the rest.

Less is more, especially when you’re suffocated by new knowledge and opinions at every turn. You’ll take a breath of fresh air when you accept that addition by subtraction (of information) is the key to efficiency and repeatable results in this chaotic environment of sport preparation.

As you grow, you’ll be ok with not knowing everything there is to know about everything, which is literally impossible. by @pedullaperformance

If we want strength coaches to be valued higher, we need to isolate what people truly need. The executable thing you’re selling is trumped by the intention or motive behind why the thing was purchased to begin with.

We aren’t just selling mere THINGS. The goal is to sell actual skills that last.

If we are to limit ourselves to deliverables, course modules, programs, and other commodities, herein lies the fault that leads coaches to believe that they can’t charge a premium.

“The market is so saturated.” No, it isn’t, unless you reduce your brand to systems and methods alone. What the market wants is your unique wisdom, experiences, thought structure, and discernment process that led to why you believe what you believe.

You might say that we are selling the same thing anyway. We might be at an executable level. But have you ever thought about how the messaging around the offer is framed? Your messaging is going to entirely dictate how a client perceives the value of what you provide and what it’s going to do for them.

If someone says they want to get faster, stronger, or make more money, the first question should be, “Why?” I don’t think S&C coaches are predestined for low pay. I think we just need to understand buyer psychology and pattern recognition. by @pedullaperformance

There’s getting faster…

And then there’s creating a true shift where noticeable, glaring progress is made.

@coach_stevens_ is a perfect example. 12 weeks of training. 1.67 10yd acceleration dropped to a 1.50. Less than 24 hours out from APEX Miami and I genuinely don’t know if we could have done anything better than we did to get him ready.

Time to put on an absolute show. by @pedullaperformance

You can do whatever you want with your career, and if this isn’t for you, keep scrolling because I am not talking to you so long as you don’t share these values…

The sole reason that I started a personal brand (and this is me explaining this to you on the deepest level I possibly can) is because God gave me me a talent I don’t want to waste.

I feel that I have skills that are fit for coaching at a high level, in person, within team sport where adaptive and agile thinking is required at high speed, and there is a lot at stake.

To fully actualize these skills, I knew I had to build a personal brand. This was the start of my endeavor to entirely purge my mind of any kind of dependence on others to feed my family. My primary goal was to maintain my ability to continue coaching at this level, while fulfilling my purpose as a husband and father.

When I mentor people through business development, this is the ultimate end. I don’t care about anything else except for keeping good coaches in the field.

There are others who will scoff at me, sarcastically saying how “inspiring” it is that I have to work 2 jobs since in person pay isn’t high enough. I’d do it 100x over if I could. What shall we do, throw our hands up and give up? I always knew it was going to be easier, albeit, a massive undertaking and sacrifice, to build a mentorship business than wait for others to give me a raise.

I love S&C and its coaches. Me saying to work more and lean into the financial challenge we are faced with is not me being insensitive to how hard it already is, it’s me calling you to a higher standard out of encouragement and care for your wellbeing.

This is not an ad for @ghostenergy Sour Green Apple, however it did make for a nice visual effect.

People who quickly get bored with training won’t like the idea that beginner, intermediate and advanced programs generally look extremely similar.

Athletes are what we’d refer to as weight room “generalists” and sport “specialists.” They are inherently highly sensitive to positive adaptation in the weight room.

The main differences in these levels of program are:

1) The stress that each one imposes on the athlete. By way of natural improvements and progression, the stronger athlete will allocate more energy towards training than a novice.

2) Exercises that have a higher “loadability” can be used for advanced athletes. Example: beginners can do a DB Reverse Lunge and squeeze what they can out of that. Meanwhile, an advanced athlete performs Hatfield Split Squats.

Trying to run 4-5 different programs at once as a one or two man show is also a one way ticket to complete chaos in your weight room. by @pedullaperformance

DOES YOUR PELVIS IMPACT YOUR PERFORMANCE? There are advantages and disadvantages of wide and narrow pelvic orientations! Wide pelvic tilts being able to stay lower and leverage time on the ground. While the narrows have a harder time with bilateral hinging so using unilateral hinging may be a better option!

IS TECH RUINING COACHING? @pedullaperformance takes us through how many coaches rely too much on the numbers instead of the athletes in front of them. Rather than using technology as a helping tool to better their athletes.

Exploring Acceleration Postures with @pedullaperformance ! COMMENT “JOE” and we will send you the link to the full episode.
.
Starting with a hip lift with a box. To then transferring that with an RDL variation. While also focusing on dropping that chin into an acceleration position. Then ending with a quick weight transfer and getting that knee into a good hip flexion position!

Tons of people will tell you to “marry the stimulus” by putting a compound movement like RDLs on a max velocity training day.

Although the result is the same, that’s not my rationale. My thought process is that if we RDL, perform Nordics, or other intensive hamstring dominant movements on the same day we sprint, we now have a full week to recover so that we can practically guarantee that musculoskeletal fatigue won’t negatively impact our speed training.

Same goes for squatting. I would prefer to squat no less than 4 day out from a speed training session.

This is the same rationale I take into exercise selection at the Division 1 level to maximize readiness on the weekend when games are played. Preparing for gameday is no different than preparing for a speed session that we know is the main thing that’s moving the needle for us. by @pedullaperformance

Guarantee is a strong word, but this is a massive piece to success within training:

While most people are adding and doing more, or looking for other methods and systems, I simply make sure my clients, athletes and I are PROTECTING our most important training days.

You could do so many things “wrong” or “sub-optimally” on paper. You could follow absolutely zero organized “system.” As long as you can consistently show up to these sessions as close to 100% as possible, you will get substantially better.

The problem is that things tend to look good on the calendar but fail in practice and in the real world. Just because you use the high-low model…this does not mean that you’ll be recovered for more high intensity training in just 2 days.

When putting lots of eggs in one basket (one training quality), it’s better to be safe than sorry. If I’m trying to build speed at my current performance level, I should be squatting and hinging no less than 4 days out from my next exposure.

This is just one example. Imagine how badly this is impacting athletes and their skill development when they go and train a certain way and then wonder why nothing is transferring. It’s not the program. It’s the fact that none of the skill work is quality.
