On this day, 72 years ago, Sara Shagufta was born in Gujranwala, Pakistan (October 31, 1954–June 4, 1984). Shagufta’s significance as one of Urdu’s most remarkable modern poets is often eclipsed by controversies surrounding her life as a working-class woman searching for love and liberation within sexist poetic milieus, in the shadow of repressive patriarchal laws instituted under US-funded militarized Islamist rule in 1980s Pakistan. We are honoured to be publishing EYES EYES EYES, Javeria Hasnain’s award-winning translation of Sara Shagufta’s posthumous collection, آنكھیں AANKHEIN, to be released September 2027. 🔗 Follow the link in our bio to pre-order at tracepress.org or at your favourite independent bookstore. by @peelijay

The ghazal is lyric poetry in its most pristine, ancient form and it manages to defy tradition whilst being traditional. In this 6-week, online class with poet @peelijay, you will read classic and contemporary ghazals across time and space, including ghazal poets Amir Khusro, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Agha Shahid Ali, Sarah Ghazal Ali and more. You’ll use these as inspiration to devise your own ghazals with meter and rhyme. This is both a learning and generative workshop geared to poets of all levels, and the format assumes no prior knowledge of the Ghazal form.
