Peer Sessions are excited to share we will participate in the 4th edition of “What is an Art Book?” at Space NN @space_n_n in Munich (Germany) to coincide with Super BOOKS 6, at Haus der Kunst @haus_der_kunst

————
Initiated by @themodernlanguageexperiment ‘What is an Art Book?’ is a hybrid event/exhibition/discussion/publication culminating in the publication of a book. Everyone is invited to participate...

An Art Book today can be seen to occupy various positions, including that of a piece of theory, a catalogue of artworks, a printed exhibition, a supplement to a pre-existing piece or a piece of art in itself. It can be a proposal for the future, an examination of the present, or what has passed.

“What is an Art Book?” is the continued investigation of what an Art Book is in terms of material, conceptual, industrial and political concerns within our existing TMLE network and Munich art makers. Over 50 artists, writers, curators, and other practitioners are invited to respond to the project’s title by contributing their interpretation of what an Art book means to them and their practice.

As a contributor, you can propose text, drawings, photographs, sculpture, performance, audio recordings, video or any other concept/theory as long as it can ultimately be realised in A4 paper format and in black and white. Each contributor will be given one copy of the finished book, and a PDF version will be available to download.

Over the three days, the contributors will supply/produce their artworks at Space NN, which will serve as an exhibition space, a production house, and a place of discourse as we create the actual art book together.

We have invited @sluice__ and @peersessions from London to host an Artist talk on the closing day, and @rubycruel will host the book launch in early 2026 in East London. The final book will be donated to public collections in the UK and Munich for the first time.

24 October 2025 6-10pm Opening night
25 October 2025 11-7pm Book production day
26 October 2025 1-5pm Artist talks and finissage

Last week we were delighted to be back at @chisenhalegallery for the latest Chisenhale Crit during Claudia Pagès Rabal’s exhibition (on until 11th May).

Many thanks to the two artists who kindly shared their work, Rita Evans and Electra Simon.

First up we watched @evans.rita film 'Respondents', a 2-screen projection featuring a female protagonist handling an assortment of sculptural objects. The discussion centred on the performer's relationship to the objects, which through controlled, choreographed movements appeared symbiotic, as they were played like instruments, and played-with like props or toys.

Next we discussed a series of work by @electrasimon titled 'Confessions', including: 'Set designers', 'In the room with the wardrobes' and 'Down by the River'. The group identified a number of art historical influences, including Rothko, Rembrandt, Bacon and Paula Rego, and felt that the poses of the figures and dreamlike painting quality suggested some kind of enigmatic narrative or allegory.

@evans.rita is an artist based in London. Find out more about here work here: https://ritaevans.com/

📆 This week! Join us on Thursday 13 March for our next Chisenhale Crit!

Chisenhale Crits bring artists and members of the public into the gallery to share their own artwork in the company of peers and established artists from the Chisenhale Gallery network.

The crits are facilitated by @peersessions (artists Kate Pickering and Charlotte Warne Thomas).

Two artists will share recent work as part of the crit. If you are an artist who would like to present new work or work in progress for discussion by the group, reserve a place as above and contact Seth via email (seth.pimlott@chisenhale.org.uk).

We are especially keen to present the work of artists outside of formal education, for whom the opportunity to have peers critique their work is less common than those presently studying on undergraduate or postgraduate courses.

📅 Thursday 13 March
⏰ 7–9pm
📍 64 Chisenhale Road, London, E3 5QZ

This event is free to attend. Book your place via the link in our bio.

Peer Sessions was recently invited to work with artists local to Orleans House Gallery in Twickenham toward setting up their own crit group. We enabled them to find out more about the benefits and different approaches of artists peer led critique groups, including how we set up and run PS. This week we put into practice discussion facilitation techniques and provided feedback on the work of seven artists across the day. It has been great to work in such a nice, welcoming location and to meet the artists. Thanks @orleanshousegallery it has been a pleasure to work with you!

Thanks to everyone who came and contributed to last night's Chisenhale Crit with guest responder artist Hannah Perry @hannahperryhannahperry . We were lucky to have two artists sharing rich and thought-provoking work, leading to insightful conversations about both.

The second artist to share work was Banita Mistry @foreign__body , who showed 3 canvases painted in various ways using henna; One was from a series titled 'Flights', and the other two from a series 'Screens'. At the start of the session, Banita performed the act of creating the works, adding lines to one of the 'Screens' paintings.

The participants were fascinated by the performative aspect of the work, and felt this emphasised the many layers that were apparent - both physically in terms of layers of paint, but also in terms of layers of meaning. There was much discussion of the woven-look of the work, and also the cultural significance of henna as a material for decorating the hands and feet of women on cerimonial occassions. This raised the prospect of whether there was a gendered aspect to the work - in terms of the traditional heirarchy in the artworld, which often overlooked and denigrated crafts as 'womens work'.

Banita Mistry is a London-based painter & sculptor who recently completed an MA in Jewellery & Metal at the RCA.

Thanks to everyone who came and contributed to last night's Chisenhale Crit with guest responder artist Hannah Perry @hannahperryhannahperry . We were lucky to have two artists sharing rich and thought-provoking work, leading to insightful conversations about both.

First up, Abdollah Nafisi @abdollah.nafisi shared his works 'Inwards' and 'Outwards'. These consisted of a series of sculptures made in wood and metal, which the audience were invited to interact with, by tapping them with an assortment of sticks and rods to generate sound. One of the sculptures, a large piece of roughly hewn wood, had its own soundtrack, while another was white and featured a large megaphone shape.

The discussion began with observations about how interacting with works was a playful experience, and lead some to consider the works as active, rather than passive objects. Others noticed how the works articualted the nature of sound, by producing it, representing it (as in the large megaphone-like object), and embodying it - by themselves becoming musical instruments.

Abdollah Nafisi was born in Tehran and recently graduated from the RCA. Find out more about his work:

Another wonderful Chisenhale Crit last night, generating a reflective and insightful conversation about Susanne Dietz’s work.

Suzanne shared a recent film [work- in-progress] “Stones good for sucking” (2024) digital video, 16mm and Super8 to HD.

The discussion began with observations about the choice of music and how the sountrack affected the reading of the film. Many felt the stop motion annimation and other elements lead to feelings of being alienation from the body. The use of the colour blue had associations with melancholy or drowning, which was emphasised by the enigmatic voiceover and text extracts from Maggie Nelson’s Bluets.

The film is part of Susanne’s ongoing research project The Tightening, investigating hormonal decline, ageism, and dementia. Using the experience of menopause, it examines themes of memory and intimacy. This research has been evolving over the past two years.

https://susannedietz.com/

The second half of the session was led by @seth_pimlott as an exploratory discussion about what kind of provision artists are seeking in the public programming of a gallery like Chisenhale. We were delighted to get so much rich and vital feedback, which will be digested over the coming weeks and months. More soon!

Join us on Wednesday 27 November for a special crit at Chisenhale Gallery, with a fresh approach to our usual format!

For the past three years, Chisenhale Crits has brought together an incredible roster of artists, guest contributors, and a regular audience of artists and art-curious individuals. Together, they have created a supportive space to critically consider new work & work-in-progress.

Building on the momentum and community already created through this series, we feel it is a good moment to think more expansively about the program, and how it might address a gap in local artist support networks outside of higher education.

📅Wednesday 27 November
⏰7–9pm

For the first hour we will facilitate a crit, during which one artist will receive feedback on new work or work-in-progress.

Then, in the remaining hour, Peer Sessions (Charlotte Warne Thomas and Kate Pickering), along with Chisenhale’s Curator of Social Practice, Seth Pimlott, will lead a collaborative workshop with participants to shape the future of the Chisenhale Crits series. The workshop will gather feedback and ideas to create a more regular group – exploring its potential structure, the forms of support it could offer, and the impact it could have on artists’ practices and local creative networks.

The event is free to attend.

🫶 Thanks to everyone who attended last nights @artquestlondon salon for contributing to such thoughtful and generative online discussions of the 2 artists’ work.

🌺 First up was Oliver Palmer, who showed an as yet untitled installation (pic 1), a tableau featuring a life-size screen prints of a group of people, one of them ex-PM Margaret Thatcher, with a suspended backdrop of hand painted floral wallpaper. He also showed a diptych of two paintings, each hand painted floral wallpapers.

The participants quickly identified Thatcher and the family from a 1980s photoshoot used to promote the Right to Buy policy. The discussion revolved around issues of class, taste and artifice.

🏠 Next up Lee Suh shared collaged images (Boundary dispute 1 and Boundary dispute 2) from a recent zine, alongside a painting, “Boarderland” (pic 2) made with plaster and home paint on wooden panel.

The group identified in the photos and zine evidence of some kind of boundary dispute, with reference to how we might define a boundary in legal, political, social and personal terms. The painting elicited more visceral responses, with participants feeling its textured ‘mouldy’-looking surface expressed frustration, disgust and distress.
