Dropping Cave and Ouchtriemakain Cave, Port Mora, near Portpatrick, Dumfries & Galloway. To the left, the small Dropping Cave has a powerful waterfall cascading over its mouth. A "tradition of the country" reports its healing properties, "that in former times unhealthy children were brought and bathed here under the belief that they would either recover very soon or die." The cave to the right, named Ouchtriemakain, might relate to a 12th century Lord of Galloway, Uchtred, who was possibly blinded and castrated in this cavern. The following posts will explore this amazing place in more detail... #holywell #cave #water #waterfall by @peetahooitt

The Well, Stamfordham, Northumberland. I know nothing about this well, it's not dedicated to any saint or worthy, but it's just great. Situated on the village green near the 18th century lockup; you can just imagine life buzzing around this place in years gone by... by @peetahooitt

'Drive your cart and your plough over the bones of the dead. The road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom. Prudence is a rich ugly old maid courted by Incapacity. He who desires but acts not, breeds pestilence. The cut worm forgives the plough.'

Bullaun stone (probably) at Kirkcolm, Galloway. These stones may have begun life as mortars for grinding foodstuffs etc., but were often used at Christian sites as baptismal fonts or receptacles for healing water. by @peetahooitt

Just moving stuff over from my other account @a.cursed.place. This is an article from the early seventies which kicked off my interest in fields. I've researched this field and others like it from across the world (everyone has them, or variants of them). I'll be posting my research on this account from now on... #cursed #probablymorecomplicatedthanacurse by @peetahooitt

St. Beorhthelm's Pool, Ilam, Staffordshire. This is a post-medieval pool or well which replaced the more remote, probably Anglo Saxon well on a hillside in the Manifold valley. It is close to the Church of the Holy Cross, opposite Ilam Hall (now a really good youth hostel). St. Beorhthelm (sometimes Bertellin or Bertram) was an 8th century saint who, while in Ireland met a woman and got her pregnant. They came to England and lived, it is said, in a cave in the valley here (see pic). "When they were hiding in the thick woods ... behold! the time for giving birth appeared, then the end to the pain, and a river of grief followed for them. Oh, how mournful is childbirth! When Bertellin was seeking out the necessary aid of a midwife, the woman, together with her newborn, died in the teeth of wolves." Following this tragedy, Beorhthelm became a hermit, and his example prompted the conversion of many pagans in the region. by @peetahooitt
