For years, we worked to develop an operation so that women undergoing mastectomy wouldn’t have to accept losing sensation as part of the price of treatment.

There are moments when your life’s work and your life collide. I never imagined that one day, you would need that same operation. Exactly one year and one day ago.

I recall a poem that said that a life well-lived can be measured in many ways, but even if your actions allow one other to breathe a little easier, you have achieved success. Your inspiration and motivation have improved conditions for so, so many. Today as before, you continue to share your gift with the world to help other surgeons help even more people. I couldn’t be more proud of you and the work we’ve done together. I love you so much!! Some results speak louder than any study.
Fifteen years ago, Marina chose peripheral nerve decompression surgery after living with debilitating headaches. Today, she's still enjoying the life that chronic pain once threatened to take away. For me, these operations aren't just about relieving pain - they're about giving people years back. Years of family dinners, vacations, careers, exercise, laughter, and mornings that don't begin with fear of the next headach. There is nothing more rewarding than hearing from a patient more than a decade later who says, "I'm still doing great."

One of the most common misconceptions about top surgery is that numbness is inevitable. This patient chose sensation-preserving top surgery with nerve reconstruction. Eighteen months later, they have regained full protective and light-touch sensation.
Nerve healing is a gradual process. It happens over months—not weeks—and requires meticulous preservation and reconstruction of the nerves at the time of surgery. While every patient’s recovery is different and outcomes can never be guaranteed, restoring sensation is an important goal whenever it can be be safely achieved.

For many patients, sensation is about far more than touch. It’s about feeling connected to your body, protecting yourself from injury, and improving long-term quality of life.

Preserving, repairing or reconstructing nerves isn’t enough.

Patients and their outcomes must be measured. We use a quantitative neurosensory test that precisely measures the ability to perceive light touch. Sensibility is recorded in grams per square millimeter, allowing for results tracking over time. During the test, small, blunt (hence painless) prongs are gently applied to the skin with gradually increasing pressure. The exact threshold at which sensation is detected is captured and displayed digitally, giving us a clear, reproducible way to evaluate nerve function and recovery.
