💨 Vaginal Flatulence. Vaginal Farting. Vaginal Gas. Queefing.

All are terms for the same thing happening in the vagina.

The vagina is a muscular flexible tube whose walls normally rest flat against one another— which can create a “potential space” for air to get trapped.

The inside of the vagina is lined with ridges and folds of expandable tissue called rugae, which can catch and hold tiny pockets of air.

If the pressure within your vagina decreases (like a vacuum effect), space within your vagina will increase and air can be sucked into it. ⬅️⬅️⬅️

This air generally can’t stay there so, as soon as the vaginal space is made smaller such as with a change in position or intra-abdominal pressure, the air is involuntarily forced out and can sometimes make an audible farting type noise. ➡️➡️➡️

This is not the same thing as farting that occurs from your anus. The gas does not smell and is not generated by your bowel system.

This noise can happen often at the worst time such as during sex, an inverted yoga pose/position such as downward dog, getting up from a sitting cross legged on the floor, and sitting in such a way that air enters the vagina and when you go to stand you get this awful farting sound.

As frustrating as this can be, remember our bodies make all kinds of noises and anyone with a vagina can experience this sound at any time or age; however, it does tend to more commonly occur in women who have had a baby.

Factors that may also contribute to vaginal gas:
✅ Weak or poor endurance of the pelvic floor musculature
✅ Having prolapse (descent) or laxity of one of the vaginal walls

We understand how this terrible sound can affect your confidence and keep you from enjoying activities you love 😔

We are here to help you at Pelvic Wellness Physical Therapy in Omaha. A thorough examination of your pelvic floor musculature including assessing the strength, endurance, coordination, and flexibility of your pelvic floor musculature can be a great starting point to addressing this annoying and frustrating symptom!

👀 Think you’re ready to run postpartum? Try these quick checks…

Your physician may have cleared for exercise at 6 weeks postpartum, but that doesn’t necessarily mean your body is ready for running.

Your body has been through an incredible journey—whether you had a vaginal delivery or a C-section. Returning to running isn’t about a date on the calendar—it’s about making sure your body has the strength, control, and capacity to handle the demands of running.

It’s important to keep these factors in mind
✨ Your muscles and fascia take at least 12 weeks to heal after childbirth (vaginal or c-section delivery)
✨ Every time your foot hits the ground while running, your body absorbs 2–2.5 times your body weight through your ankles, knees, hips, pelvis, and pelvic floor.
✨ Every postpartum journey is different. Your readiness depends on factors like your activity level before and during pregnancy, sleep, nutrition, stress, emotional well-being, and overall recovery.

In considering return to running, you should ideally be able to run without:
✔️ Back, hip, or pelvic girdle pain
✔️ Urinary leakage
✔️ Pelvic pressure or heaviness

At Pelvic Wellness Physical Therapy,we take a whole-body approach by assessing:
✅ Functional movement
✅ Strength, coordination, and endurance
✅ Pelvic floor function
✅ Sleep and recovery
✅ Nutrition
✅ Emotional and mental wellness

Our goal is to help you return to running with confidence and reduce risk of any potential injury.

Every postpartum body deserves more than a quick clearance. Our visits are built for you to receive the time and attention your recovery deserves. ✨ by @pelvicwellnessomaha

💫 Come walk with us this Saturday!

In pelvic health, we see every day how closely the body and mind are connected after having a baby. Pain, leaking, pressure, a birth that didn’t go as planned, a body that doesn’t feel like your own — these physical changes can weigh heavily on your emotional health. Anxiety and depression can show up in the body too.

Healing isn’t just physical. It isn’t just emotional. It’s both, and you deserve support for all of it.

It is our duty to screen each of our patients for mental health concerns, lead them to support, and BE a supporter.

Come walk with us! Bring your stroller, your partner, your kids, your friends. You don’t need a story to have a reason to walk. We’d love to see you there. 🚶‍♀️ 💫

✨ Your pelvic floor is pretty amazing!

Your pelvic floor muscles is one of the most fascinating muscle groups in the body — this might also be our bias as pelvic health PTs ☺️

It works behind the scenes every single day, supporting your bladder, bowel, sexual, reproductive, and core function.

When it’s working well, it functions automatically.

It adapts as you:
👟 Walk
🏃 Run
🤱 Pick up your child
🛒 Push a stroller
🧺 Carry a laundry basket
📦 Move furniture
🤸 Jump on a trampoline

No conscious squeezing or thinking required!

The pelvic floor is also constantly responding to your breathing, movement, posture, and the demands of your everyday life to keep you supported.

When symptoms like leaking, pelvic pain, heaviness/pressure, constipation, or pain with intimacy show up, it’s often a sign that this amazing system needs a little extra help—not that you’ve done something wrong.

The more you understand your pelvic floor, the more empowered you become.

And trust us...learning about your body can actually be fun! 💚

Come learn with us at Pelvic Wellness Physical Therapy in Omaha and discover how your pelvic floor is designed to support you through every stage of life. ✨ by @pelvicwellnessomaha

💥

💥 Are core exercises safe during pregnancy?
💥 Are certain core exercises bad for me during pregnancy?
💥 What about abdominal doming?

These are common questions we’ve heard in our years of practice as pelvic health PTs.

Here’s the answer: It depends. 💥

Your core is meant to work during pregnancy.

As your baby grows, your body is carrying an increasing load. Maintaining strength, coordination, and the ability to manage that load can be an important part of staying active throughout pregnancy.

Rather than asking, “Is this exercise bad for me?” we like to ask:

“How well is YOUR body managing the load?”

If you notice doming or bulging through the midline of your abdomen during an exercise, it may be a sign that your current strategy for managing pressure could use some adjustment.

💥 One exercise may cause doming for one person but not another. And sometimes small adjustments can improve your ability to manage the load.

So, are certain core exercises “bad” during pregnancy?
Not necessarily. It depends on the person, the exercise, and how your system responds to the load.

We can help you:
💥 Modify exercises
💥 Adjust load and positioning
💥 Improve breathing and pressure management
💥 Find alternative exercises when needed

🌿 We often recommend starting postpartum pelvic health PT as early as 4-8 weeks — but let’s be honest, childcare at that stage can feel impossible to figure out.

So here’s your reminder: bring the baby. Wear the baby. Nurse the baby mid-session if you need to. We’ve built our space to work with real postpartum life, not around it.

And if 4-8 weeks has already come and gone? It’s never too late to start. Whether you’re 2 months or 2 years postpartum, your body still deserves care and attention.

Come as you are. We’ll meet you there. 🌿

🤍

🤍For a few years, I felt a growing pull toward an out-of-network, concierge model of care.

It wasn’t because I believed one model was better than another. Insurance-based practices play an important role in healthcare, and I’ve had the privilege of working alongside many exceptional therapists who provide outstanding care in those settings.

But gradually, I realized I was looking for a practice model that more closely reflected my values as a pelvic health physical therapist.

I wanted the freedom to spend more time listening, educating, and treating the whole person. I wanted the flexibility to create truly individualized plans of care based on each patient’s goals rather than the constraints of insurance coverage. Most importantly, I wanted every patient to feel heard, supported, and never rushed. 🤍

Making the transition to an out-of-network practice has allowed me to practice in a way that more deeply aligned with why I became a pelvic health physical therapist in the first place.

I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity, and even more grateful for the patients who choose this model of care because they value personalized, one-on-one care and are investing in their long-term health and well-being. It is a privilege to be part of your journey.

Sincerely,

Dr. Shannon 🤍 by @pelvicwellnessomaha
