See below for her answer to: What advice do you have for PT students or new therapists to be successful in their career?
“For anyone entering pelvic health: don’t do it alone. Find a clinic with a genuine mentorship program — ask about it directly in interviews — and lean on those providers with every question you have. Courses can’t replace mentorship. Once you have that early foundation and are solid in your patient care skills, you can do anything. This specialty is badly needed, but you have to be well-trained to do it well.

For anyone considering cash-based practice: surround yourself with others doing the same. It’s a scary road at first and easy to feel isolated. You need people to ask questions, watch how they operate, and remind you that growth follows focused effort. I honestly wouldn’t still be practicing PT if I weren’t in this model — I believe it’s the best way for patients to get excellent care, and it’s what keeps me fulfilled as a therapist.”

Most people don’t realize this until they’re building their website… it’s not the website that’s hard.
It’s not having the right photos to put into it.
So you’re sitting there thinking:

how do I show what I actually do?

Postpartum Return to Peloton Spinning Guidelines

1. Wait 6 weeks before jumping back on the bike. That hard seat is doing no favors for a healing pelvic floor so please be patient. A padded seat can also help tremendously as you return. During the first 6 weeks before getting back on the bike, focus on walking, mobility, gentle breath and core work, and rebuilding your strength foundations. All of my patients receive an 8 week postpartum return to strength guide.
2. After 6 weeks, begin with 2, 15-20 min sessions of gentle pedaling with little to no resistance over the course of 1-2 weeks. This is a test run to see if you are ready to bike. Does your pelvic floor feel ok on the seat? How do your hips feel? Do you need to raise the bar to decrease stress on your low back? I recommend trying to space these rides out over the course of 1-2 weeks as time permits. I do not recommend biking 2 days in a row at this point (or really ever).
3. Once you comfortably complete 2, 15-20 minutes of gentle pedaling, start with a 20 minute low impact class in the saddle. Pick a fun class! No need to push for PRs at this point. Just enjoy the ride!
4. Continue with 2, 20 min low impact rides per week for the next 4 weeks gently progressing your resistance in the saddle.
5. Wait 10-12 weeks to ride out of the saddle as it puts significant pressure on the pelvic floor. As a physical therapist, I want to remind you that rebuilding your strength foundation in these early months will pay larger longterm dividends than solely focusing on cardio.
6. Enjoy the ride!!!

But I’m not a normal person 🌺

I had a patient recently tell me she has had painful speculum exams all her life. She said she thought something was wrong with her and that she must just have low pain tolerance because every clinician who has performed a speculum exam acted like she was being dramatic.

A pelvic exam should not be painful. And by painful, I mean cause YOU pain. Yes, pain is subjective, but pain is a signal something is wrong during a pelvic exam.

Many times this is a sign of high tone pelvic floor dysfunction or that your pelvic floor is too tight, contributing to painful exams. AKA you need to schedule an appt with your friendly neighborhood pelvic floor therapist ASAP.

Other signs of high tone pelvic floor dysfunction: urinary incontinence, pain with intercourse, inability to insert a tampon, vaginal burning, constipation, feeling that you can’t empty your bowels completely, lower abdominal, back, or pelvic pain, hip pain, pain with periods, trouble starting your urine stream…do any of these sound familiar? 👀
