On the latest episode of PEM CHATT, I talked with Corey Edgar, DMSc, PA-C, about delivering bad news using the SPIKES framework. A few points that stuck with me:
* Communication can be learned, practiced and improved.
* A one-sentence “warning shot” helps prepare the patient or family for what comes next.
* Bad news is defined by the person receiving it.
* The emotion in the room is not derailing the conversation. It is the conversation.

Most of us will not give a death notification on every shift, but we will deliver bad news on most of them.
