Why do we do this to babies?
- Babies are nose-breathers (especially young infants). So, if their nose is clogged, they are not just uncomfortable, they are MAD.
- Their nostrils and airways are TINY, so it doesn’t take much mucus to create a complete block!
- Their nose not clear - they can’t breathe, and they also can’t EAT!
- Do NOT use tap water to do this - you’re going to use sterile nasal saline - 1 drop or more right into the nose before you suction.
- Do this before feeds and before bedtimes.
- Can do this for ANY child who doesn’t understand how to blow their nose.

*Pro tip: For 18 mo - 3 yo range if hard to suction
Get on the floor, put your baby between your thighs so you can hold their arms and legs down with your legs, so you have 2 hands to suction bc these are the kids who cannot blow their noses yet

*Pro - tip:
Prepare - have ALL of your equipment - the 3 S’s:
Swaddle
Saline
Suction

**Check out our next post (coming tomorrow, if you’re reading this in real time) - for ER staff suctioning “pro tips”.

If you do want a list of my favorite items, since I always get asked this, I madly created an amazon list to have these all in one place for you - let’s see if this works! Comment LIST and I will send you that!

EVERY teen should hear these before they get behind the wheel (or in a friend’s car) - what we, ER doctors, NPs, nurses, techs, and other staff WISH they could know.

I LOVE my amazing team @childrensaterlanger in the pediatrics ER - these people KNOW how to take care of kids! Plus, they’re a wealth of parenting info.

Comment with what else you’d like me to ask the team for future similar posts and share what YOU would never let your child do!
