Do you ever wonder…

How come it’s always other people, or external circumstances you can’t control, that hold the keys to your happiness?

How come your power is dependent on everything and everyone but your own sense of self?

When and how did this happen?

Long before self-help books and girl bosses were a thing, pioneering surrealist Penny Slinger asked herself those questions over and over again, using her art as a vehicle for the exorcism of her innermost demons — especially the demon of patriarchal oppression.

Slinger was just 21 when she embarked upon the 7-year long venture of completing her seminal project, An Exorcism, in 1970, in which she comes face to face with the parts of her own psyche standing in the way of her own peace.

She understood two crucial things:

1. No one is coming to save you.
2. The most dangerous enemy you’ll ever face is within.

And the enemy is without? You most likely put them in charge.

In our deep dive into the dark feminine psyche and its gargoyles Penny and I explore how heartbreak, disillusionment and emptiness can become doorways toward the brightest futures we can imagine — if we have the courage to look within.

Would you rather take the long way out, through endlessly repetitive corridors of polished marble…or take the easy, smooth way out through the door with the mouldy handle and spider webs?

Through choosing to meet her inner self at her least flattering, over and over, for years on end, and using her art as self-transformation instead of just political declaration, Penny Slinger started laying the foundations for the feminine utopia all the way back in the 1970s — realizing that as women, we don’t have the power to change the world. But we have the power to change ourselves, and that’s pretty much the same thing.

Ahead of our feminine science fiction interview, I wrote an introduction to the visionary feminine surrealist.

Comment "SURREAL" to get the full intro 👾

Tuesday, September 22nd, join us at The Philosophical Research Society for an immersive Fall Equinox gathering exploring the threshold between light and dark through the contemplative and symbolic traditions of East and West.

The evening begins with an Opening Ceremony by Penny Slinger, accompanied by Astara Calas, marking this moment of balance and creating a shared space for reflection, release, and intention.

The immersive performance act SEEKERS will begin the night with an exploration of the Equinox through the Western esoteric language of Tarot. Prompted by an audience interactive three-card pull, SEEKERS will offer a musical experience inspired by the archetypes of the selected Arcana.

The night will culminate with Liberate Elemental Forces, highlighting the Eastern tradition of Indian raga, a living musical framework connected to mood, time, season, and states of consciousness. Like ritual, tarot, or astrology in the Western esoteric tradition, raga offers a symbolic language through which we encounter the inner landscape.

Together, these traditions create a dialogue between East and West, sound and symbol, light and dark, inviting us to experience the Equinox as a moment of balance, regeneration, and renewal.

On my way back to Maui, my heart is full. 🌺✈️
Grateful for the laughter, the deep conversations, unexpected reunions, and the beautiful weaving of old and new friendships. Thank you for the inspiration, wisdom, creativity, and love shared along the way.
As one journey comes to a close, another begins. I now turn my attention to preparing for our upcoming Bhutan retreat this November, a pilgrimage of presence through the extraordinary Himalayan Kingdom, the Land of the Thunder Dragon. 🇧🇹🐉
If Bhutan has been quietly calling your name, send me a message. 🐉✨There are still two spaces open for those who feel called to join us for a journey of beauty, friendship, sacred celebration.

Until our paths cross again… mahalo for making this journey so memorable. 💛

🌟New Acquisition🌟

Penny Slinger ‘I Speak What I See,’ from the series ‘Mouthpiece’, 1973 (printed 2024).

Penny Slinger’s photomontages often feature the artist’s own body; a feminist act of reclaiming control and agency from the patriarchal experience of the 1960s. In ‘Mouthpieces’, Slinger composites different parts of her body into her mouth. The resulting grotesque and abstracted images create a witty and provocative visual pun, questioning the societal absence of women’s voices. In subverting traditional notions of beauty and femininity, Slinger also confronts the eroticising and commodification of women’s mouths through the pornography and advertising industries.

Penny Slinger is in a league of her own when it comes to the raw power of the female form. Emerging from the 70s underground, she hijacked Surrealism and used her own body as a canvas to explore the deepest corners of desire and the psyche. Her work is incredibly tactile, blending a dark, Gothic edge with an unapologetic celebration of eroticism. It’s the kind of art that gives you pause because it feels so visceral; she was mapping out the “secret architecture” of the feminine long before it was mainstream.
