Artist, author, priestess Penny Slinger’s work to liberate the feminine spans filmmaking, surrealist art, photography, oracle-making, music and writing.

Her journey began as a teenager at art school in the early sixties, and her studies continue today, sixty-two years on.

As we approach the sacred Nine Nights of Navarātri, I wanted to share this extraordinary image of Goddess Durgā by Visionary Artist @pennyslinger from Her online Dakini Oracle.

Penny’s work has long explored the mysteries of the Divine Feminine, the sacred body, Tantra, and the transformative powers of the Goddess.

I am deeply grateful that she offered such a beautiful endorsement of my new book, Navarātri Nine Nights of the Divine Mother: A Guidebook for Uncertain Times.

Word on the street is that we ecosexuals are going to be PROTESTED at our event Tuesday night at Chicago’s Music Box Theater. Gee. Well, we are used to controversy, because anything to do with se*uali*y is hotly contested. Our film, Playing with Fire, is HOT, indeed. I like to think of being protested as part of the work. We also heard our the screening was sold out. But Wednesday we will show our other two films so get tickets.

Our L.A. REDCAT screening last night was a love fest. So many friends, my family, and wonderful colleagues. Some of my all time favorite artists were there; Guillermo Galindo (our film’s composer), Ron Athey, Penny Slinger, and even inspiring Suzanne Lacy came. She said she didn’t really get us over the years, but she loved the film, and got what we were doing and complimented us. What a beautiful thing to get that kind of feedback. And a standing ovation too! Film scholar Constance Penley came from UCSB! Love her! Makes all the pain and sacrifices of the grueling post production period worthwhile.

Special thanks to Amelia Jones for moderating our Q and A, sweet Hoshi Hana for helping us sell our new swag and books, Matthew Johnstone for publicity and helping navigate our guest list with more people than tickets, and all who came—especially cast and crew that showed up.

Gratitude to film director diva, Zachary Drucker, for helping us secure the gig at the REDCAT. The REDCAT was a dream venue with an awesome team. Curator Jheanelle Brown was a beautiful host. We had a blast. Stayed at the grand ole 700 room Biltmore Hotel where the Academy Awards used to be held back in the 30s and 40s. Then today we got to experience the Yoko Ono show at the BROAD, with a tour by the events curator, Darin Klein. So grateful.

THROUGH THE LIMINAL: An Equinox Celebration of Sound, Symbol & Ritual

Join us for an immersive Fall Equinox gathering exploring the threshold between light and dark through the contemplative and symbolic traditions of East and West.
The evening begins with an Opening Ceremony by
Equinox Ritual, marking this moment of balance and creating a shared space for reflection, release, and intention.

The immersive performance act SEEKERS will begin the night with an exploration of the Equinox through the Western esoteric language of Tarot. Prompted by an audience interactive three-card pull, SEEKERS will offer a musical experience inspired by the archetypes of the selected Arcana.

The night will culminate with Liberate Elemental Forces, highlighting the Eastern tradition of Indian raga, a living musical framework connected to mood, time, season, and states of consciousness. Like ritual, tarot, or astrology in the Western esoteric tradition, raga offers a symbolic language through which we encounter the inner landscape.

Together, these traditions create a dialogue between East and West, sound and symbol, light and dark, inviting us to experience the Equinox as a moment of balance, regeneration, and renewal.

Do you ever wonder…

How come it’s always other people, or external circumstances you can’t control, that hold the keys to your happiness?

How come your power is dependent on everything and everyone but your own sense of self?

When and how did this happen?

Long before self-help books and girl bosses were a thing, pioneering surrealist Penny Slinger asked herself those questions over and over again, using her art as a vehicle for the exorcism of her innermost demons — especially the demon of patriarchal oppression.

Slinger was just 21 when she embarked upon the 7-year long venture of completing her seminal project, An Exorcism, in 1970, in which she comes face to face with the parts of her own psyche standing in the way of her own peace.

She understood two crucial things:

1. No one is coming to save you.
2. The most dangerous enemy you’ll ever face is within.

And the enemy is without? You most likely put them in charge.

In our deep dive into the dark feminine psyche and its gargoyles Penny and I explore how heartbreak, disillusionment and emptiness can become doorways toward the brightest futures we can imagine — if we have the courage to look within.

Would you rather take the long way out, through endlessly repetitive corridors of polished marble…or take the easy, smooth way out through the door with the mouldy handle and spider webs?

Through choosing to meet her inner self at her least flattering, over and over, for years on end, and using her art as self-transformation instead of just political declaration, Penny Slinger started laying the foundations for the feminine utopia all the way back in the 1970s — realizing that as women, we don’t have the power to change the world. But we have the power to change ourselves, and that’s pretty much the same thing.
