"#BARBADOS’ SENIOR #ATHLETES MAKE THE NATION PROUD"

Some members of Barbados’ victorious 27-member athletics team to the 39th Huntsman World Senior Games returned safely to the Grantley Adams International Airport this afternoon, bringing home an extraordinary medal haul.

The team secured 82 medals:

33 gold,
35 silver
14 bronze

This is an outstanding achievement for a nation of just 166 square miles and fewer than 300,000 people.
Remarkably, 68 of the medals were gold or silver, underscoring the exceptional talent, discipline and determination of our senior athletes.

This success comes as little surprise. Many of the medal winners also distinguished themselves at the recently concluded Barbados National Senior Games (BNSG), organised by the Ministry of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs.

Now in its 22nd year, the BNSG continues to provide a platform for local athletes to develop their skills and prepare for international competition. The Huntsman World Senior Games, held in St. George, Utah, attract competitors from around 36 countries and all 50 US states, making Barbados’ performance even more commendable.

As Barbados celebrates 60 years of independence and five years as a republic, our athletes’ display of the national colours on the international stage is especially meaningful. Their achievement deserves recognition and celebration as part of this year’s Independence festivities.

Congratulations to our outstanding senior athletes for flying the flag high and demonstrating that age is no barrier to excellence. taken in BGI - Grantley Adams International Airport by @peoplebds

In Part 2 of Troy’s story, he sheds light on the importance of supporting caregivers — and making time to care for yourself, too. 💜

That’s why it’s so important that we #ShareTheCare, so no one person has to carry the weight alone.

Throughout this campaign, it’s been a pleasure to connect with you, the community! 💜

The conversations we’ve had (and continue to have) about caregiving and sharing the responsibility of care within our families and communities 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿. Because the people who need us most (our children, older loved ones and people with disabilities) shouldn’t be left to carry the weight alone. When everyone shows up, everyone benefits.

We saw the power of these conversations at our Massy Stores pop-up, where we connected with the public and shared the message of #ShareTheCare.

There is always more we can do to support one another. Let’s keep showing up, sharing the responsibility and #ShareTheCare together. 🫶

Our parents raise us, care for us and do everything they can to support us as we grow. So when the roles begin to change and they need care themselves, it can be an adjustment.

For Troy, caring for his mother was never a question of if, but how. Taking on that responsibility was an act of love, patience and respect for the woman who raised him.

Troy is one of the many men in our communities who show up for the people they love. His story reminds us that sharing the care means making room for everyone to give it. 💜

Our team popped up at Emerald City to chat with shoppers about caregiving! We heard some amazing stories about the ways people are already sharing the care in their families and communities.

From checking in on loved ones to lending a helping hand, care can show up in so many everyday ways. And of course, we had a few cool giveaways along the way! 🎁

Thank you to everyone who stopped, shared their stories and reminded us that we all have a part to play.

How are you sharing the care? 💜

As the 2026 #Barbados National Senior Games season continues to promote active and purposeful ageing, the Games are pleased to support initiatives that strengthen awareness, understanding and care within our communities. 💜

Special Advisor to Elder Affairs, Ms. Cynthia Forde, representing the Ministry of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs, delivered brief remarks at the 2nd Pamelia Brereton Memorial Lecture, hosted by the Barbados #Alzheimer’s Association.

The lecture forms part of the collaboration between the Association and the Barbados National Senior Games, reinforcing an important message: active ageing is about more than sport—it is about health, dignity, inclusion, connection and continuing to live with purpose at every stage of life.
