Gorgeous group of participants in <<HOMAGE>> Studies Project at Impulstanz this Summer. How to describe the magic we made; the collective stories, timelines, opened secrets, embodied and unknown lineages, histories, traversals unmapped, yet traced through dance, breath, and shared & new forms of access.

Out of this research together, I’m thinking of “Access Intimacy” as that which is not only shared between living beings, but which extends into our relationship with those who have passed, how they touch into, travel through, move within us. How we need each other in relation, always. Many thanks to this incredibly wise group for dancing out our ghost embodiments, for sharing in daily ritual practice, for our altaring/altering, for the quality of attention we shared, for the openness to divination and to the practice of access as spellwork. How our cripcestors and trancestors danced through us, how we constellated & transgressed the strictures of family, how we conjured new forms of remembrance, how our nervous systems touched, trembled, shifted, and radiated. Our work continues to resonate and I am forever grateful for this time with you. Still can’t believe the storm that came through on our last day! Note the rain soaked window in our group altar pic.

Thank you to @impulstanz_festival for supporting this program and to Fio mal_fio4, Lena Z, the Workshop Team and Travel Team for such excellent organizing. Thank you to TQW @tanzquartierwien and Rio @riorutzi for hosting. Thank you to our super caring class assistant and archivist Hicran Ergen @studio_wagashishi_xoxo, and my sweet travel assistant Chris Peck @pckpckpck. All images and video by Hicran. What a transformative week at @impulstanz_festival!!! It has been an honor to work with such a powerful group of artists, sharing the wildness of deep inner processes, grieving toward liberation. If you are in Vienna, come to the studio @tanzquartierwien to get a taste of our practices.

Participatory presentation of the Research Project, “Homage.” Friday, 17 July 2-4pm with @ameliaa.jeann, @m_papagram, @nashfole, @sofia_valdiri, @annemegier, @oliva_roja, @nunweilertanz, @mairinina, @graefin_von_choreo

All are welcome to enter the space we’ve created together through altar-building, writing, witnessing and participating in scores for and with our group.
If you desire, you are welcome to bring an offering for the altar in the form of a symbolic object or something from nature. You are welcome to write with us through guided questions, and to witness and move with us through scores based on memory and speculation. The audience can come and go as needed throughout the event. There will be relaxed seating with some chairs, cushions, and yoga mats.

I am honored to be invited to perform and teach in these Spring-Summer months for two programs that both encompass hosting, holding, and personal and political questions of belonging.

Friday, June 5th at 7:45pm
Performance: Hôte Cicatriciel at Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Angie Stardust Foyer, Free

The title of the performance can be translated as either host or guest of scars, as the French word ”“hôte“ holds both meanings. Drawing on Jacques Derrida’s essays on hospitality , in which the philosopher explores this ambiguous dichotomy, I will offer my body and its pelvic scar as a field of inquiry into belonging, vulnerability, and the need for what Derrida, in the context of self-conception, refers to as ”the Other.“ The interactive performance illuminates, among other things, the precarious relationship between status and statehood, and addresses real and abstract forms of participation enacted through care, control, regulation, and subjugation.
The performance is in English spoken language with German language simultaneous translation. The Foyer is wheelchair accessible, and there will be a relaxed performance.

Teaching: Homage
Impulstanz, Vienna July 13-17
10am-4pm, Tanz Quartier Wien, Studio 1
This Research Project is for anyone who wishes to study the art of homage. An homage may be dedicated to a loved one, a teacher, a friend, a mentor, a chosen family member or community member, or to someone who has influenced a movement, genre, school of thought, or field of research whom you may wish to honour. It may also be dedicated to an unknown or imagined person who represents an ancestry, or a legacy of struggle or oppression.
Everything is ceremony, everything is threshold. Discourse occurs between voids. Honored to sit or lay or dance void-to-void, bodyvoid to bodyvoid, with or without language, to co-create the paths we need to get from here to there to there to there.

Performance: “Enfreakment (Homecoming)”

So, Diane Arbus...what’s up with her body of work?

I was invited by the Schwules Museum and Gropius Bau to interrogate her traveling exhibition, Constellations, with a new performance-intervention:

“Enfreakment” is a reference to the term invented by disabled photographer and scholar, David Hevey to describe the way disability imagery is oppressive to its subjects, regardless of the photographer’s intentions.

In describing Arbus’ gaze, Hevey writes:
“She saw herself and her “freaks” as fellow travelers into a living oblivion, a social death. … the crucial thing is that she considered her projection to be more important than their reality.”

At the same time, Arbus herself was bipolar, a chronic condition not seen as a disability at that time. She would die of suicide in 1971. I added (Homecoming) to the title to invite her/ spirit to join “us,” in a shared world, beyond projections.

You are welcome to join me as I inhabit the exhibition at Gropius Bau adorned with costumes by @_rjrh_ with relics and instruments to usher in the New Freak Year with, among other things, an adaptation of Allen Ginsberg’s “Footnote to Howl” and possibly a splash of Patti Smith.

Big thank you to Collin Klugbauer from the Schwules Museum for the invitation, and for the indelible statement, “Freaks aren’t a distorted image of society; they are society.”

Stay for @river.in.motion and @thisisbishopblack

New York, I‘m still on your shores. Come join me for another ”show“ of Untitled / DEI Memorial Service. Tickets: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/untitled-dei-memorial-service-tickets-1481893536459

Saturday, August 2nd at 6pm
Mabou Mines Theater
122CC - 150 1st Ave.
2nd floor, wheelchair accessible
ASL by SignNexus
Audio Description by Madison Zalopany @mzalopany
Masks Encouraged

I‘ve been an Associate Artist at @maboumines since 2021, and in these years have been growing a relationship with the theater inclusive of care and access. This work comes to the theater by way of @revenuenyc, an initiative by @thetanknyc to revitalize NYC theater life. It will be a lively time with a festival vibe and open courtyard!

Untitled / DEI Memorial Service is an open space to talk about grief and its many forms. Anyone who has lost someone is a type of expert at grieving. For 60 minutes, I will be on the stage sharing a bit about my own research on loss, and holding space for the audience to share their stories. I’ll have a mic on the stage and one in the audience. I will sometimes invite a volunteer to hold my hip or assist me.

The title of the show is a bit tongue-in-cheek - like, mourning a time when it was ”celebrated“ to be marginalized, or more like, ”marginally safe“ or more like not threatened.

When I first brought this to @lincolncenter for #summerforthecity, we managed to make the outdoor Underground Theater feel like a living room. While I shared how the loss of my mother is changing me, audience members shared their own grievances and grief: fears of job loss in the current climate of academia, the unexpected loss of a beloved artist and friend, and the endings of relationships. Come talk with me, be honest, share your sorrow, or your way of mourning. Feel free to drop a comment here, too.

[ID: Perel is held by an audience member while another holds the mic for them. They are in a pale, angelic frock in golden light. Then they are laid on their side on the stage with a gold rope harness over their body with long, pale, cocoons hanging overhead.] Images: @mayrawallraff taken in Mabou Mines by @perelpix

HI NEW YORK!

FREE SHOW!

Friday, July 11th at 8pm

Lincoln Center

Underground at Jaffe Drive

Tickets: https://www.lincolncenter.org/series/summer-for-the-city/untitleddei-memorial-service-970

ASL, live audio description, further access doula-ing

About:
”Untitled / DEI Memorial Service,“ is an open space to talk about grief and its many forms. As I’ve been mourning the passing of my mother in the past year, I’ve learned that anyone who has lost someone is a type of expert at grieving. I have learned so much from sharing with and listening to others, and it is changing the way I think about performing and the shared space of a ”show.“

For about 60-90 minutes, I will be on the stage, sharing a bit about my own research on loss, but I’ll also be holding space for the audience to share their experiences and stories. I’ll have a mic on the stage and one in the audience. I will sometimes invite a volunteer to hold my hip or assist me in some way. This will be a space for anyone who wants to share and participate in mutual aid to do so.

The title of the show is a bit tongue-in-cheek - like, mourning a time when it was ”celebrated“ to be marginalized, or more like, ”marginally safe“ or more like not threatened. I wanted to talk about and listen to how it is right now for people, and hold a space for personal, social, and political loss, fear, and confusion.

Just in the time of creating this show, there have been a few significant losses in some shared communities. Patty Berne, @patty_berne, jes sachse @squirrelofmystery, Zaza/ Diana Oh @ohyeadiana_ , all artists whose lives, examples, voices, influences, labor, and artistry have touched, held, changed so many disabled, queer, survivor, activist-artist lives, have become ancestors. Let’s also honor their spirits together.

Thank you so much @lincolncenter for hosting me, and to @ryanjhaddad for inviting me.

On my flight now! See you on the other side…and on the other side…

This is the first time I‘m posting *myself* in maybe 5 years? Please bear with…I‘m sitting in a laundromat before heading to @kampnagel_hamburg to tour Natural Acts, which premiered at @hauberlin in the Fall. I present these beautiful images by Mayra Wallraff of me and Rita Mazza and an audience volunteer. We have lounge chairs by Finnegan Shannon, and 2 works by Itamar Gov.

This work is a major project as I remember showing up to Berlin to tour with one suitcase some years ago. I‘m at a point now where I feel that life is iterative. We sit on things like this app and perform progress, but when loss occurs, we are no less worthy of being seen.

Natural Acts was made during a period of very fresh grief. It disordered my insides and emptied them. This show is really for anyone who has or is facing loss, or is in a grieving process that might not find resolve. Rita and I occupy that empty, open space and gesture toward a poetics of remembrance.

That’s a fancy way of saying we‘re pointing toward the void in metallic harnesses by Russell Harris. So if you’re in Hamburg Friday, May 30 or Saturday, May 31st, come join us.
