Dreeah Austin deserved to live 🤍 #Justice4Dreeah 🕊️

We are heartbroken to share the tragic passing of Dreeah Austin, a loving mother from Newark who lost her life due to a preventable postpartum complication just TWO weeks after giving birth.

Dreeah's story highlights the urgent need for action to address maternal health disparities, especially among Black mothers, who continue to face systemic inequities in healthcare.

“In New Jersey, 91% of all maternal deaths are considered preventable, with 53% occurring postpartum. It is devastating that despite the many programs and initiatives funded to improve maternal health, Black mothers like Dreeah continue to die from preventable causes,” said Dr. Nastassia K. Harris, Founder & Executive Director of the Perinatal Health Equity Initiative.

Black women are more likely to be diagnosed with preeclampsia or have high blood pressure during their pregnancy. This serious condition carries a high risk of death and other serious complications if it is not properly managed. It’s important that our workforce has the skills and knowledge to prevent, recognize and support a mama at risk. You can help us develop our next course by giving us 20mins of your time and we will give you a $20 gift card. Put a “💜” and a team member will reach out to put you on your calendar. by @perinatal_equity

Congratulations to the 1st Doula Cohort of @perinatal_equity!

After nearly one year of training, mentoring and gaining qualified births in hospitals, birth centers and home births they have officially graduated the program.

I honestly could not be prouder of this group of women who didn’t quit when things were rocky out the gate.

They preserved, drew strength from within and trusted me to lead them. They spoke freely from the heart about their experiences and their WHYS!!

I’ll be seeing them in these doula streets and of course at PHEI 💜💜

PHEI just helped shape a national report on what actually keeps Black mothers well.

We're one of seven organizations selected from nearly 150 applicants nationwide to join the Maternal Mental Health Equity Fund, a four-year cohort built around one idea: maternal mental health care works best when it's community-rooted, not clinic-first.

The Fund's new report, Community-Rooted Maternal Mental Health: Creating Trusted Care for Families, names what our South Ward team has always known. Prevention starts before anyone names a diagnosis. It starts with housing. Food. Transportation. Breastfeeding support. That's the work happening every day through DOPE Mamas, Sisters Who Breastfeed, and Mamas In Bloom, long before a mother ever needs a clinical referral.

Black mothers carry the weight of systems that were never built with them in mind. Community-rooted care meets them there first, before stigma or isolation gets the final word.

Read the full report [link in bio] and see the model we're building in East Orange, alongside six other community-led organizations across the country.

Ok here we go! Working to get more comfortable on camera but I hope the message came through clearly. This Black Breastfeeding Week, we invite our community to support our mamas by making a gift of $18 to keep our breastfeeding services free and accessible to our families.
As a bonus, our grant partners @focusforhealth have agreed to match our campaign dollar for dollar up to 20k! That would bring our grand total to $40,000 🎉. We have raised $3245 and we have 5 days to raise $20k. We can’t do this with you. Will you join us by making a donation today?
