Congratulations to the 1st Doula Cohort of @perinatal_equity!

After nearly one year of training, mentoring and gaining qualified births in hospitals, birth centers and home births they have officially graduated the program.

I honestly could not be prouder of this group of women who didn’t quit when things were rocky out the gate.

They preserved, drew strength from within and trusted me to lead them. They spoke freely from the heart about their experiences and their WHYS!!

I’ll be seeing them in these doula streets and of course at PHEI 💜💜

Black Breastfeeding Week kicks off tomorrow, and our Alliance partners already have a full line-up of ways to get involved. ✨

Here’s where you can show up:

🤎 Black Mothers’ Breastfeeding Association is hosting their Annual Black Mothers Breastfeeding Summit in Detroit on August 29, featuring a community panel, kids activities, vendors, and more. Register at bmbfa.org/events/bbw2026.

🤎Mamatoto Village is running a Donation Drive all month, collecting lactation essentials like breast pumps, nipple butter, and baby wrap carriers to support mamas and families in their care. Donation link in their bio.

🤎Center for Black Women’s Wellness is holding their August Community Consortium, Nourished & Nurtured, on August 25, a conversation on evidence-based breastfeeding practices and the link between breastfeeding and long-term heart health.

🤎Perinatal Health Equity Initiative has a full month of programming in New Jersey, from screenings to breastfeeding history to a Black Lactation Provider skills mixer. Scan their QR code to see the full calendar.

This year, Black Breastfeeding Week is also preserving Black breastfeeding history through the Community Legacy Project, building toward BBW’s 15th Anniversary in 2027. Community organizations hosting a BBW event or Irth’s National Milk Crawl can register for a free Community Legacy Organizer Kit and create their own BBW Story Squares, sharing memories, photos, and keepsakes that will become part of a national community art installation. We are celebrating the incredible work of our friends at the Perinatal Health Equity Initiative.

Since April 2018, the Perinatal Health Equity Initiative, located in New Jersey, has been dedicated to a single mission: making equitable care available, accessible, and affordable to Black mothers.

The ultimate goal of PHEI is to reshape Black maternal health throughout New Jersey, fostering an environment where justice and joy thrive together. Through the implementation of evidence-based strategies, they seek to transform the narrative, proving that childbirth for Black mothers can be a joyous and beautiful experience. Rather than merely surviving childbirth and pregnancy, Black infants and mothers deserve dignified, respectful care along with the necessary resources and tools to truly flourish in motherhood.

Another beautiful night with our Loved Ones! 💜 Session 4 of the Loved Ones Program brought Brittany Wright, MPH, IBCLC into the room to talk breastfeeding education and how partners, aunties, grandmas, and other loved ones can show up in support. Breastfeeding isn’t just on mom — it takes a village. 🤍
