Years of design work came together earlier this month as @nufootball hosted their first football game at the @newryanfield!

Designed by our Chicago studio in collaboration with @hntbcorp, the 35,000-seat stadium draws from its context, pairing glass and limestone with expressive steel and sweeping curves the echo the character of the original Ryan Field.

The design rethinks how fans experience the game, from open, connected concourses and intuitive circulation to the Wildcat Wall, a 2,000-person standing student section positioned directly above the end zone to being students closer to the action and amplify the energy in the stadium. Our branded environments team also helped to shape that experience through signage and wayfinding, mapping and storytelling, and destination integration, creating a cohesive visual identity that helps fans navigate and connect with the stadium.

After years of working on the project, it was exciting to finally experience Ryan Field as a fan and see the design in action!

𝐀 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐀𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐰 𝐉𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐬𝐨𝐧’𝐬 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞.

The Andrew Jackson Foundation recently announced a new $132 million plan to modernize visitor facilities and infrastructure while returning the landscape around the Mansion to the appearance of its agricultural past.

As part of this work, a new operations facility outside the historic area allowed several outdated buildings to be removed. Built between 1930 and 1941, the Maintenance Building, Pump House, and East Field Barn were demolished, while the wings of the Storage Barn were removed, leaving its original brick core intact for adaptive reuse. All four buildings were documented before the work began to preserve their history.

A special thank-you to Patriot Demolition Services LLC for helping us take this important first step.

Next comes a new 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫, designed by Perkins&Will and thoughtfully sited to better integrate with the historic landscape. It will give visitors a place to pause, recharge, and get oriented before exploring the site.

The Visitor Comfort Center is the first step in a larger transformation that will also include a new museum, designed by Perkins&Will, and new interpretive experiences developed with Gallagher & Associates.

Support this new chapter by visiting our website to learn more and make a difference.

Our Branded Environments team partnered with WM to bring the new South Florida Recycling Facility Education Center to life—an immersive experience designed to connect visitors with the recycling process in a meaningful, memorable way.

Located above the recycling floor at WM’s largest facility, the space helps visitors better understand and connect with the recycling process happening in real time below.

From the custom mesh wall that stores tour helmets within WM’s iconic logo to bold branded graphics and glass-applied messaging that points directly to the machinery below, every element guides visitors through the journey of recycling as it happens. A mobile centerpiece showcases how recycled materials are transformed into new products, even down to WM employee uniforms. Every detail was crafted to make the experience engaging, accessible, and impactful.

Proud to continue our partnership with WM and help shape experiences that inform, inspire, and connect. by @perkinswill_chi

Closer care, closer to home.

UChicago Medicine Crown Point has received an Honor Award from @AIA_Illinois in the Interiors: 5,000 SF and Over category!

The 132,000-square-foot facility brings a micro-hospital, cancer center, imaging, surgery, and multispecialty care together under one roof, expanding access to specialized care for Northwest Indiana. Inside, a light-filled Patient Pavilion connects each department through intuitive, nature-inspired wayfinding, while Indiana limestone, warm wood, and imagery drawn from the local landscape create a welcoming sense of place.

Congratulations to the project team and our partners at UChicago Medicine, PMB and Walsh Construction!

What happens when women across the AEC industry come together to share ideas, experiences, and perspective?

At our recent Women in Design panel, leaders from across the firm and industry came together for an evening of conversation around mentorship, career growth, sponsorship and creating more inclusive design practices. Because shaping the future of design starts with shaping the communities behind it.

Thank you to our incredible panelists Lindsey Peckinpaugh, Pat Bosch, Sommer Schauer, and Kate Thatcher, and to our moderator, Margaret Cavenagh, as well as everyone who joined us and helped to make the conversation so meaningful. by @perkinswill_chi

“Chicagoland gets its first architecturally distinguished stadium in over a century.”

@nufootball's new Ryan Field officially opens this October, and it’s already earning praise as a worthy successor to the architectural legacy of Wrigley Field and Comiskey Park.

The new 35,000-seat stadium draws from its Chicago context, pairing glass and limestone with an expressive steel structure and a series of curves that echo the character of the original Ryan Field. Inside, wide concourses, intuitive circulation, and accessibility-focused design create a more welcoming experience for every fan.

Thanks to @ekeegan521 for featuring the project in the Chicago Tribune! Read more at the link in our bio.

We’re thrilled to celebrate Crow Island’s Citation of Merit Award from Modernism in America from @docomomous— a recognition of the school’s extraordinary legacy and the thoughtful stewardship that continues to shape its future. Originally completed in 1940 by Perkins&Will with Eliel and Eero Saarinen, Crow Island has long stood as a landmark of progressive, child-centered design. Today, its renovation and expansion honor that legacy while bringing new life to the campus for future generations.

Now in its 13th year, the Modernism in America Awards celebrate the documentation, preservation, and reuse of modern buildings, structures, and landscapes across the United States and U.S. territories. by @perkinswill_chi

As back-to-school season begins, we’re revisiting a school that helped define the future of educational design: Crow Island School.

Built in 1940, Crow Island is widely considered the first modern school in the U.S., introducing a new approach to learning environments through child-scaled spaces, connections to nature, and its iconic L-shaped classrooms. When we returned to renovate and expand this landmark project, the goal was clear: to honor its legacy while creating spaces that support the needs of current and future generations.

“When you are working on a project that involves a historic building like Crow Island, it is a strong advantage to have a team that considers the value of the relationship that the community has with the building, and the symbolism that the building embodies for so many,” says Dr. Kelly Tess, Superintendent of @winnetkapublicschools.
