This laboratory and office building (Site 3) is part of MIT's ambitious South of Main Street (SoMa) Development in the heart of Kendall Square's innovation hub. Designed by our Boston and Chicago studios, the project aims to draw a community of scholars, with tenants ranging from small incubator start-ups to global pharma clients.

To create spaces for all and an authenticity crucial to preserving Kendall Square's identity, #MIT gave the art of #placemaking a high priority. We renovated the interior and restored the exterior of the existing Main Street building to provide leasable spaces that invite public interaction. Restaurants and specialty retail on the ground floor animate the neighborhood, encouraging pedestrian-oriented activities and enhancing MIT's innovative culture.

Today, the @StarbucksReserve Roastery on Chicago’s Michigan Avenue makes its much-anticipated debut. Housed in the former Crate & Barrel flagship, the five-story, 35,000-square-foot space is now the largest Starbucks in the world. The bold design puts coffee production on prime display, creating an immersive experience of the “art, science, and theatre of coffee”. Starbucks Roastery’s internal design team led the project design, with Perkins and Will providing design development and project delivery services. We’re honored to have been a partner in seeing this special project to fruition.

#ClimateChange is one of the most pressing issues of our time. We are excited to work with @c40cities, the City of Chicago, @POAHCommunities & the Garfield Park community to bring this sustainable living project to our city.

The Garfield Green project will live up to its name by generating 100% of its power and processing all of its stormwater on-site.

#ThowbackThursday Feature: Crow Island School | Winnetka, Illinois

The school was the first of its type to be zoned by age group, with four classroom wings surrounding a common activity core. Each classroom is a self-contained unit; an L-shaped space with its own workroom, outdoor study/play courtyard, restrooms, sink, and drinking fountain.
More than 60 years after the school was opened, it remains one of the most imaginatively and effectively-designed educational facilities of our time.

#ThrowbackThursday Feature: Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum | Chicago, IL

The museum’s design embodies a physical and metaphorical link to The Chicago Academy of Sciences’ mission to cultivate greater understanding of the natural history of the Midwest. The angular masses housing the exhibits recall the shifting sand dunes that existed on the site before it was converted to park in the late 19th century. Their indeterminate quality expresses the dynamics of nature. The building is embedded in the site and the roof hovers just below the tree line at its peak.

Here is another project from our books as part of the #FromTheArchives series.
•
Contemporaine is a 15-storey condominium building located in vibrant downtown Chicago. In response to the varying scales of its neighbours, the design adopts a strategy of urban collage.
•
The sculptural quality of the concrete tower and the articulation of its individual functional parts is a way of mediating the buildings to the varying scales of the neighbourhood.
