What does it look like when design puts people, community, and well-being at the center?

@asid_hq’s National Awards recognize projects that advance health and well-being, foster more inclusive communities, and respond to environmental challenges. This year, we’re proud to have three of our projects recognized across two FOCUS categories.

As North Texas’ first affordable housing development designed to be inclusive and welcoming to LGBTQIA+ seniors, Oak Lawn Place creates a strong sense of belonging and community. The 84-unit development also connects residents to public transit, the Resource Center’s Community Center, and its Clinic—all within walking distance.

Our hearts are full after a meaningful week of giving back. Across four incredible events, our team came together to raise funds, lend a hand, and support organizations and causes making a difference across DC.

1. 💙 Whitman-Walker Walk to End HIV — We joined more than 1,000 walkers and runners at Anacostia Park for the 40th annual Walk & 5K to End HIV, to support accessible HIV care, honor those we’ve lost, celebrate survivors, and help end the stigma surrounding HIV.

2. 🚲 BellRinger — For the fourth year, our team is riding to support lifesaving cancer research at Georgetown University’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. With a fundraiser at @dachashaw that brought in $1,500, we surpassed our annual fundraising goal of $15,000!

3. 🥊 Haymakers for Hope — Tyler Haley stepped into the ring at Beltway Brawl VII after more than four months of training and fundraising for cancer research. With support from Davis Construction and Sienna / ALKS Associates, Tyler raised more than $24,000, contributing to an incredible $570,000+ raised by fighters throughout the event. @davisbuilds @alksassociates

4. 🌱 DCBIA Community Improvement Day — We spent the day at East Capitol Urban Farm in Ward 7, working alongside DCBIA and project partners to refresh and improve this important community space. From planting and repairs to new gathering spaces and amenities, the day’s work will help the farm continue to serve the neighborhood for years to come. @universityofdc

@bowiestateuniversity’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Center is woven into the fabric of campus—a place every student will pass through at some point during their academic journey. Customized, technology-rich learning environments create a stage where students at Maryland’s oldest HBCU are “empowered to speak” and “destined to soar,” while celebrating Bowie State’s history as a diverse institution and Dr. King’s ideals of empowerment, justice, equity, love, and community.

“This is an artistic, highly technical, beautiful facility,” says Dr. Otis Thomas, Department Chair of Communications at Bowie State University. “This is one of a kind. You won’t see this any place else.”

“Have the courage to face the uncertainties of the future.”

These words from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1964 Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech inspired the facade of the Martin Luther King Jr. Center at @bowiestateuniversity, where the quote is translated into waveforms expressed through the building’s louvres and windows.

At the heart of campus life, the Center serves as a hub for learning, creativity, and connection. A tribute wall honors Dr. King's life and legacy, while artwork and graphic elements throughout the building celebrate the importance of using one's voice to create positive change. In the spirit of Juneteenth, the Center reflects a shared belief in the power of education to advance opportunity and inspire future leaders.

“Every student receiving a Bowie State education will pass through this building at some point in their curriculum,” says Bowie State University President Aminta H. Breaux. “The skills they learn here will give them the self-confidence and practical tools to navigate real-world challenges in future career paths.”

Step inside Virginia Tech's new home for hands-on engineering: Mitchell Hall.

A soaring central atrium anchors the 284,000 SF building, connecting a wide range of laboratory environments that reflect the multidisciplinary nature of modern engineering teaching and research. As the new home of Aerospace & Ocean Engineering, Mitchell Hall will be a hub for research that reaches well beyond the classroom.

A network of accessible Green Links knits the building into the campus through inclusive pathways that connect the building with the landscape.

Targeting LEED Silver, Mitchell Hall will be healthy, collaborative, and built for discovery. Completion expected 2028.

#FirmwideFeature: Teaching laboratories and instructional spaces are about transmitting knowledge and training the next generation of innovators. These carefully designed environments help students move from concept to application through hands-on experimentation, observation, and discovery. Integrated tools and technology help bring theory to life, while durable, thoughtfully selected materials support the rhythm of continuous use and learning.
We believe transparency encourages greater participation in STEM disciplines by putting important work on display and embracing “teaching in the open.” Naturally lit, comfortable environments where learning is visible, collaborative, and engaging help fuel the pipeline of future researchers and scientists.

At The Field School, classrooms now breathe with possibility. Science labs buzz with discovery as students gather around expanded worktables. The Aude Building pulses with collaborative energy, its reimagined spaces reflecting the school's vibrant identity. Below, in the transformed Harris Family Athletic Training Center, athletes train in light-filled rooms overlooking Washington, DC. Then rises the Innovation Center. A glass-wrapped stage where makers, artists, and thinkers converge. Four phases, one transformation: learning unleashed, community ignited, futures forged.

This past spring, we welcomed students from @catholicuniversity’s Integrated Design Studio into our studio to explore how ideas evolve through collaboration, technical dialogue, and multidisciplinary teamwork. In collaboration with kpff_inc, @tyliininternational, and @interface, our team members led workshops and discussions that introduced students to the collaborative process behind architecture, structural engineering, and building materials.

Several Perkins&Will team members, including Catholic University alumni, were proud to connect with students throughout the semester, sharing perspectives from practice while encouraging curiosity, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of the profession.

At NORC’s (National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago) new workplace, data becomes something you can see, experience, and connect with. Designed to celebrate the work of researchers, analysts, and collaborators, a branded installation wall transforms survey research into an immersive architectural moment.

Using computational design, we translated responses from NORC’s long-running “happiness survey” into a field of wooden blocks, each representing an individual survey response. Variations in stain saturation reveal patterns within the data, while painted edges highlight respondents who identified as “very happy.”

The result is a warm and engaging installation that reflects NORC’s mission of transforming research into meaningful insight while creating a memorable arrival experience for employees and visitors alike.
