Snippets from Tales of Two: A Library and Theater for Castles Corner for @yalearchitecture

Site: Dublin, Ireland between Werbergh and Ship St Little

This project engages the site’s history through two key walls: the Dublin Castle wall along Ship Street Little and the retaining walls between Hoey’s Court and St. Werburgh’s Church. These structures have long anchored cycles of building and erasure, creating a layered urban condition. The proposal incorporates them into a campus of public programs -a library, theater, and gallery- that connect these parallel spines.

The irregularity of the site introduces
deviations, misalignments, and irregularities within the underlying grid system, creating attunements at a more localized scale. The project operates at both macro and micro scales, balancing overall order with site-specific responsiveness.

The work draws on A Pattern Language by Christopher Alexander, and the literary visions of Jorge Luis Borges’ The Library of Babel and Umberto Eco’s The Name of the Rose, alongside contemporary discourse on the evolving role of libraries. by @permadwell

This project reintroduces the native wild rice Zizania Palustris to the Winooski River corridor as a climate-adaptive food system that couples floodplain restoration, regional food production, and alternative land ownership models. By leveraging on-going dam removal, state funding for riparian replanting, and hybrid traditional and contemporary processing infrastructure, the project explores the opportunities for ecological repair, community based food production, and regional food sovereignty

While the faciity can adapt and embrace the encroaching floodline of the dynamic Winooski river, designing for changing environments and needs, requires designing for the lifespan of the building on a material and programmatic level across multiple scales of time.

When the rice production processes outgrow the site, moves, or is no longer needed, this project allows the timber frame to be dismantled and transported, leaving only the limestone foundations to fossilize back into the earth as landscape.
