THE THIRD MEMORY is a 2000 two-channel video installation by French artist Pierre Huyghe.
The title refers to the transformation of the event of John Wojtowicz’s attempted Chase bank robbery in Brooklyn (1972) first into journalistic fact, then fiction [in Sydney Lumet’s 1975 film “Dog Day Afternoon”], and finally into memories of the event as they have come to reside alongside the fiction.

In August of 1972, Wojtowicz attempted to rob a Chase bank which led to a police response that prompted Wojtowicz and his cohort Salvatore Natuarale to take 8 hostages, which attracted national media attention coinciding with Nixon’s re-election acceptance speech. Wojtowicz revealed that he had committed the robbery to pay for his homosexual lover’s sex change surgeries. In Huyghe’s The Third Memory, Wojtowicz claims that the FBI was ordered to kill him to prevent live media coverage of a “gay bank-robber” from disrupting President Nixon’s speech.

In THE THIRD MEMORY video installation, Pierre allows an older Wojtowicz to walk through a set with actors to reenact scenes from the robbery. The re-enactment is filmed from a two-camera set-up projecting footage onto two adjacent screens, where the subject is an actor of Wojtowicz robbing the bank, and Wojtowicz himself giving directions to actors. Hamza Walker notes in an essay on the installation “Although dual projection theoretically challenges a singular, fixed perspective by acknowledging a separation between a viewed and viewing subject, in this case, it also multiplies and magnifies Wojtowicz as the focus of the piece, demanding that his memory produce as opposed to reveal, a truth” by @worn.to.pieces

The original Maltese Cross Cuff by Fulco di Verdura was designed in the 30s originally as a pair of broaches for Coco Chanel, who Verdura was close friends with. He was inspired after a trip to Ravenna Italy by the Byzantine mosaic of Empress Theodora. The original two broaches were made by re-setting some gemstones already owned by Coco into gold Maltese cross motifs. Given his first pieces were worn avidly by Coco Chanel, there was no doubt that his fine jewelry would see great success.

French Jewelery, sculptor, and model Alina Alamorean posing with her works

Born into a family of avant-garde artists and architects in Braşov, Romania, Alamorean moved to France in 1990 intending to study architecture, but her path soon shifted. A pivotal moment in 2003 sparked her interest in the relationship between jewellery and architecture, leading her to study at the Haute École de Joaillerie in Paris, where she graduated in 2005.

Driven by the ambition to elevate jewellery as a major art form, Alamorean embraces intuitive, rapid-making processes that allow materials to dictate form. Her powerful, sensual works blur the boundaries between ornament, sculpture, and the body, balancing instinct with intellectual inquiry through experimentation, chance, and play.

Her work has been exhibited at institutions including DIVA Diamond Museum, Bunka Gakuen Costume Museum, Palais de Tokyo, Bozar, and the Museum of Arts and Design, and is held in the permanent collection of DIVA Diamond Museum in Antwerp. A two-time recipient of the HRD Diamonds Awards in 2005, she won the competition’s first international prize in 2007 and received two Tahitian Pearl Trophy awards the same year. Her work has also appeared in publications including The New Jewelers (Thames & Hudson, 2012), Bijoux contemporains, une passion (2018), Bagues d’Homme (2018), and Laurent Benaim: Curious Encounters (Taschen, 2019). by @worn.to.pieces

Portal to the 2016 Hermes installation “Here, Elsewhere” (shown further in previous post) by playwright and director Robert Wilson.

This immersive installation created by Robert Wilson to present the Hermès Maison home collection during New York Design Week. Staged at Cedar Lake in Chelsea, the exhibition combined theatrical lighting, live performers, video portraits, sound, and carefully arranged furniture to transform luxury objects into elements of a dreamlike narrative. Rather than displaying products in a conventional showroom, the experience blended Hermes’ designs with an immersive interior landscape to create a cohesive and dreamscape atmosphere. It presents the idea of “the dream of a house” rather than a realistic home. by @worn.to.pieces
