Had a great time last week in Montreal. Thanks to everyone at Patel Brown and especially @casa_marquette @bronson.smillie @bretteduardz for the excelllent install. Thanks to @alex__bowron for the thoughtful text, @imagefoundry for the scanning and @superframe for the framing.

Squash, Stretch,Splash

Squash, Stretch, Splash is a five-panel drawing that is simultaneously a single image space and five separate frames of an animation. Two animated movements are depicted – five balls falling and bouncing in the classic squash and stretch animation technique and a splash sequence over five frames. While the background is repeated and alludes to five frames of the same animation progression, the floor of the work conforms to perspectival space across a single, long image.

 “Luke Painter combines the traditional medium of drawing with digital tools used by contemporary architects to create haunting works that destabilize the viewer’s sense of space and time. The surreal and dream-like images led me to search the works for the foreboding and magical narratives I believe to be buried in the creeping fog and dark forests.

Painter uses 3-D software to construct his intricate compositions, which he then draws directly from the image on the screen, including all the inconsistencies inherent in a flattened three-dimensional model. This serves to further confuse the viewer’s perspective, amplifying the surreal.

Painter’s painstaking drawings build on a tradition of storytelling that forces the audience to imagine. His work engages the viewer in an act of play and creativity, as it seems impossible to look at his works without envisioning myriad stories in a beautifully grim land of unrealities.”

@rsronsiu and I have some collaborative drawings included in the exhibition Echo Without Origin at @patelbrowngallery opening this Friday, March 21, from 6pm-8pm.

These collaborative and exploratory drawings by Ron Siu and Luke Painter, depict figurative and decorative elements that reveal moments of repetition, mimicry and deviation. Themes of growth, reflection and mirroring, are present in both the process of drawing, and the imagery presented. Delicate, graphic and muted marks appear and disappear in these compositions, producing and overall feeling of immersion and the ephemeral. taken in Patel Brown Gallery by @personfrompotluck

Excited to travel to and have some drawings at the @mmmmmaterial art fair in Mexico City next week through @patelbrowngallery . In great company with @marigoldasantos and @kyleamartens.

Egg or Die

This drawing shows a number of eggs interacting with a wall. The title refers to the slogan “Skate or Die” popularized in the 1980’s by skateboarders as a funny, philosophical battle cry. In this case, eggs are dropping into and “skateboarding” on a half-pipe on top of a wall. The eggs are ornamental in nature and look like Fabergé eggs but are lifted from Hermes scarf designs. I suppose it is funny that they are of a shape that is somewhat round but not like a wheel on a skateboard, and that they would roll into and out of the half pipe in a wonky way. There are a number of ornamental squares on the surface of the wall that are anchor plates. These plates are often used in older buildings to reinforce and distribute weight on a wall and to keep it secure. As with many functional things in the past, people found ways to make these decorative and make them integrate with the surface of the building. by @personfrompotluck
