Luke Painter Ding Dong, 2020 Screenprint 🚪🗝️
“Luke Painter combines the traditional medium of drawing with digital tools used by contemporary architects to create haunting works that destabilize the viewer’s sense of space and time. The surreal and dream-like images led me to search the works for the foreboding and magical narratives I believe to be buried in the creeping fog and dark forests. Painter uses 3-D software to construct his intricate compositions, which he then draws directly from the image on the screen, including all the inconsistencies inherent in a flattened three-dimensional model. This serves to further confuse the viewer’s perspective, amplifying the surreal. Painter’s painstaking drawings build on a tradition of storytelling that forces the audience to imagine. His work engages the viewer in an act of play and creativity, as it seems impossible to look at his works without envisioning myriad stories in a beautifully grim land of unrealities.” – Luke Painter,  Border Crossings, Crossovers Luke Painter’s Prints are available for purchase through patelbrown.com/prints .˚⊹. ࣪Available in limited quantities, while supplies last! ࣪⊹˚. 🗝️ 🚪🚪🚪🚪🗝️🚪🚪🚪🚪🗝️🚪🚪🚪🚪🗝️🚪🚪 #canadianartist #torontogallery #LukePainter #contemporaryart #patelbrown

🌊Check out Patel Brown’s artists in public spaces @art_toronto !🌊 While walking around the fair this weekend, make sure to keep an eye out for some Patel Brown artists’ work featured in public spaces! 🔴“Luke Painter’s practice explores a wide range of historical and contemporary subjects in relation to pattern, ornamentation, technology and his own personal history. He creates fictional spaces that sample and purposely reimagine these subjects in surreal, humorous and narrative ways. Alex Bowron writes, “[this work] breaks down one of the fundamental elements of animation. The “Squash and Stretch” is an animator’s tool for improving lifelikeness through a contrasting change of shape, from squashed to stretched or vice versa, to make a stiff object appear supple. By presenting a frame-by-frame illustration of two classic motion studies –the bouncing ball and hydrodynamics, or the study of water in motion– Painter’s subject becomes the mechanics of production.”🔴 Works by Luke Painter, Marigold Santos, Swapnaa Tamhane, Alexa Kumiko Hatanka and Maria Hupfield will be featured in spaces throughout Art Toronto.  Work Featured : Luke Painter, Squash, Stretch, Splash, 2024 ink on paper 🌊🔴🌊🔴🌊🔴🌊🔴🌊🔴🌊🔴🌊🔴 #arttoronto #arto2025 #torontoartfair #publicspacesarto #lukepainter marigoldsantos #mariahupfield #alexakumikohatanaka #swapnaatamhane  #patelbrown #patelbrowngallery

🪼 Echo Without Origin 🪼 🐚 The group exhibition, Echo Without Origin, is on view at our Toronto gallery! 🐚 "A multiplicity of subjects are presented in this exhibition, from the naturalistic and bodily, to the structural and architectural. Soft drawn edges, edges of the body, bodies in scenes of stillness, still moments of anticipation, anticipated patterning on animal forms, forms personified cutting through space, and space filled with overlapping planes of color." -From the exhibition text by Brian Ginther. 🪼 With works by: Luke Painter & Ron Siu, Alberto Porro, Tammie Rubin, Mia Sandhu, Winnie Truong, Tuan Vu, Balint Zsako. 🪼 🐚 The exhibition is on view until May 10, 2025 🐚 📸 by Darren Rigo @raidendingo 🪼🐚🪼🐚🪼🐚🪼🐚🪼🐚🪼🐚🪼🐚🪼🐚🪼#artgallery #groupexhibition #torontoart #canadianart #contemporaryart #patelbrown #patelbrowngallery

📢 On view now in Toronto! 📢 ☁️ “The group exhibition Echo Without Origin explores the idea of “floating signifiers”, a semiotic and linguistic term used to describe words, symbols, images, and mark-making as fundamentally untethered and therefore able to shift in their meaning. These signals exist as crafted lines, references to the body, text, and representational shapes.” ☁️ -Excerpt from the exhibition text by Brian Ginther @nbginther 📢 Echo Without Origin is on view until May 10, 2025. 📢Our Toronto gallery is open from Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 6pm. 📸 by Darren Rigo. #artgallery #groupexhibition #canadianart #torontogallery #torontoexhibition #contemporaryart #patelbrowntoronto #echowithoutorigin #lukepainter #ronsiu #albertoporro #tammierubin #miasandhu #winnietruong #tuanvu #balintzsako
