With @hallozeen and @zinespooktacular and all the other Halloween zine fairs coming up I thought it might be a good time to share the zine I made for the zine making workshops I ran at the last @brisbaneillustrationfair.

If you’re not sure where to start with making zines, or if you’re feeling a bit blocked like I am right now mini zines are the best place to start! I hope this helps you to make a mini zine. Maybe for Hallozeen or maybe just because! by @petatron

I’ve been feeling a lot of self imposed pressure to create lately and I’m trying to take that away by being loose and just letting things happen and not thinking too much about it.

This page is from a weird little mini zine I’m working on, no theme really, besides being a little bit creepy with the spooky season in mind.

The last page was all in pencil so it’s safe to say it’ll be mixed media.

What will the next page be? I don’t know.

You’ll have to wait til @hallozeen to see it I suppose! But I will probably share a bit more before then.

I made a bookmark with a scrap piece of card and my posca pens.

I’m trying to read more instead of scrolling and it can be really hard sometimes. I have to leave my phone in another room a lot of the time.

I’ve read 8 books so far this year and I’m a quarter of the way through book 9. So I guess I’m doing alright.

Just some of the fun I’ve been having with the Staedtler watercolour crayons.

I meant to film more of drawing this and then totally forgot to film the rest so you’re just getting to see a few clips of my process. You get the idea though right?

I don’t always know what I’m drawing when I start. It’s kind of fun to work that way at times. Especially good when I’m just making art for myself.

I need to draw some more with these crayons. More monsters? Or something else?

I know everyone is always drawing florals with their watercolour crayons but that’s just not my way. I’m more of the kind to draw monsters.

Been having some fun with these Staedtler Watercolour Crayons. Still undecided if I’m going to splurge on the Caran D’ache neocolour ii’s just yet. I accidentally snapped one whilst working on this and it didn’t feel so bad because these were affordable.

How great are the textures created using oil pastels? This is from last week when I was feeling a lot more playful.

Once again I’m just using cheaper materials, the Monte marte oil pastels and a sheet of copier paper.

The goal of this piece was just to create. It doesn’t need to last. It’s not going to be sold. I just made this art for myself and for the act of creating.

Today I’m going to try and play again. I will ignore my to do list and just create for the sake of creation.

I’m having such an art block right now. Struggling to even just doodle. And I’ve got a list of things to do and deadlines to make. Not sure about that. But, These are some of the badges I’ll have that you can buy along with my zines (and hopefully the new ones I’m trying to make) at @hallozeen next month! So that’s something. by @petatron

I’ve been watching everyone’s videos and looking at all the lovely art you’ve been making with your Caran D’Ache neocolour ii’s but I couldn’t quite justify the price to try out a new medium! I’ve been searching for awhile for a cheaper dupe, most I’ve found have actually been around the same price.

These Staedler watercolour crayons were half the price so I thought why not get them to have a play. I can already tell the quality isn’t the same, but I don’t think they’re bad either. It’s just more of a student range. Which is fine by me.

Making art shouldn’t be expensive. Some of my favourite art supplies are student or even child quality! And who knows, if I do find I love working with these I may even treat myself to some neocolour ii’s. by @petatron

I have a small list of art things to do, but I’m not doing any of them. I’m feeling a bit blocked on that. But not so blocked that I can’t draw some fun mushrooms in my sketchbook.

I finished my sketchbook recently so let’s have a look at some of the best pages.

As always I’ve been very into colour this year, but this feels brighter than some of my past sketchbooks. As always lots of monsters, creatures, fantasy and fun.

I love keeping a sketchbook. It’s a great place to get those ideas down, a great place to play. I often refer to them when I’m working on more serious (that’s the wrong word for me I never do serious) bigger pieces.
