7 years ago today we lost our dear Karina. She was 16. In the span of those years I have had eight friends lose children. I don’t know the meaning of this. But I am on a journey of sorts to learn. It is taking many shapes. I am shedding, maybe. Sometimes I just wander. Do you ever do this, without a destination in mind? Thank you to whoever came by the plot to drop flowers. We all carry loss and memory in unique ways. Be still, but not for too long. When the spirit moves, the heart opens. taken in Mountain View Cemetery, Oakland, California by @petenicks

I am in a state of exploration, grief and healing while working on SIXTEEN, a film about my daughter Karina Nicks. I don’t know how to catgorize it right now… a poem, song, an essay? I’m listening and learning. I’m shedding a sense of who I was and discovering a new sense of myself…which is something of a mess really. but that’s ok. i’m trying to open myself to growth even though the sadness is crsuhing. I’m allowing karina to teach me by connecting with her closest friends. I’m learning how each of them carries her in surprising ways. I photographed her friend Kames in Boston on my old Yashica T5 on Ilford HP5 400 b&w. It was last used long before Karina was born. I’m also learning how to develop my own film, which is super messy and unpredictable. That’s the point. it’s life and it’s real. here’s one of the grand lake theater where Karina worked (and Paolo currently does). they’ve been a huge supporter of my work. leica m6 with film flic superpan18 400. kodak hc-110 to develop. I also have a shot here from my Yashica of my water color brushes. I’m exploring watercolor, inspired by rob Duncan who came up with the “points of color” idea on the film’s website (www.sixteenfilm.com). It’s meant to captured the idea of how our universality and our individualism mingle. it’s about how the spirit of the loved ones we’ve “lost” permeates the air, the roots of the tress, the stars in the sky. i’m hoping to explore a little bit of animation in the film inspired by this idea. I might even paint it myself? The process of learning a new thing can be calming and meditative if you free yourself from perfection. It is the same feeling I want people to get from the film. these new medium are informing my process of making this film in ways that I can’t totally explain. It seems this film is about discovering a new way to relate to those we’ve lost and ultimately to ourselves. It’s about how the nature of spirit is both permanent and ever-shifting at the same time. My hope is that you can learn something about karina and that she can teach you a little something as well…maybe that your pain is a gift waiting to be unwrapped. by @petenicks

dusted off my old Yashica T5 point-and-shoot 35mm film camera that was sitting in my drawer for...uh, 28 years? 1998 might have been the last time i used it. it has since assumed legendary status. and it still works. these are all ungraded shots right from the camera. took some tinkering and a few rolls to figure out how to manipulate it because there are very few controls. (notice hair in gate!) Kodak Portra 400. Ilford HP5 Plus. developed by Photolab in Berkeley, CA. by @petenicks
