POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Some photos from this past week’s EVEREST: THE OTHER SIDE events. Thank you to Davis Guggenheim and Pete Nicks for moderating these panels. Both were among the most thoughtful Q&As I’ve been part of. Davis and Pete each got right to the heart of the story and engaged with the complexity of making it, and those conversations meant a lot to me.

Join us this October for this season’s Body of Work series - a retrospective glance at films and filmmakers who have shaped our visual culture. From WED, OCT 28 to FRI, OCT 30, catch three films that span over two decades from award-winning director/cinematographer Peter Nicks. Nicks’ films explore complex social issues through intimate, character-driven non-fiction narratives.

Night One: THE WOLF (2000, 55 min) is a fearless chronicle of the filmmaker’s own drug addiction, trafficking, and incarceration during his college years.
Night Two: HOMEROOM (2021, 90 min) follows a group of seniors at Oakland High School into spring 2020.
Night Three: Special Learning Session followed by THE WAITING ROOM (2012, 81 min), a look into the emergency room at Oakland’s Highland public hospital, a nationally recognized training ground for medical interns and residents.

On FRI, OCT 30, Nicks will discuss the range of factors that precede filming, from access negotiation to relationship building and camera and lens choices in a Special Learning Session. Registration includes screening access. Tickets are available at SCRIBE.ORG/bow-PN or at the link in our bio!

🏆 Another milestone for Call of the Jab!

We’re incredibly honored to share that Call of the Jab has won Best Short Documentary at the Tryon International Film Festival this past weekend.

Thank you to the Tryon Film Festival team for recognizing our film and creating a space for stories from around the world to be seen and celebrated.

This journey has been about more than making a film. It’s about honoring our ancestors, preserving our culture, and sharing Grenada’s stories with the world. 🌎

Great night at the Berkeley sneak peek of Professor Jason Spingarn-Koff's ‘The Coral Rescuers’ at @bampfa!

The film tracks a team of scientists and reef guardians racing to save Florida’s last corals from extinction as climate change threatens their survival.

The screening was followed by a conversation with ecologist Rachel Carlson and alum and editor Clayton Worfolk (‘08).

📸 II: Two of our most prolific doc alums @petenicks and @dan.k.krauss came out to celebrate Jason getting back into the director’s chair.

Welcome to FRAMES OF FREEDOM.

Inside the walls of San Quentin Rehabilitation Center, the first film festival ever held inside a state prison brought incarcerated and formerly incarcerated filmmakers together with members of the film industry under one roof.

The film follows the people who made it happen, the filmmakers whose work made it to the screen, and the stories that brought everyone together.

This is just the beginning.

Follow @framesoffreedomdoc as we share the journey.

After advocacy by Oakland filmmakers, city council approved an amended version of Mayor Barbara Lee’s film rebate program in what was otherwise an austerity budget.

According to the ordinance, which originally passed in 2024, the rebates would apply to TV and film expenditures, giving each project between $50,000 and $250,000, a 10% rebate on all eligible expenses, and other rebates if the production hires labor from one of Oakland zip codes with the top five highest levels of unemployment.

For decades, filmmakers from Oakland have wanted to turn The Town into a thriving film hub like Atlanta and New Mexico, but have suffered setbacks due in part to a lack of city support.
