Fortunate Cookies

Guided by the standout vocal styling of Rachel Holmshaw, this supergroup of maestros features Kristian Craig Robinson aka Capitol K on drums, keys, filmmaker and avant guitarist Peter Sant, sonic colourist Mark Axiak on bass and twelve string guitar and young Jake Mallia on additional
drums.

Why are we fortunate ?
Hailing from Sydney (Aus), Malta, Hastings & London (UK), Kristian, Peter and Mark had already been performing across Malta as trio Spinozas Dog @spinozas_dog when Rachel’s chance visit to the island resulted in the impromptu recording of a self titled debut album made over two days in the midst of a heat wave.

A history of collaborations between various players in Fortunate Cookies goes back decades, yet this configuration had never met, until the day of recording. The resulting record was entirely spontaneously composed and resonates with the instinct of the collective in that moment. In the weeks following the session, select edits were mixed by Capitol K with the addition of Farfisa organ and percussion.

What do we see when we listen?

This Sunday, we're going to find out!

For our next pop-up listening session, Żafżifa leaves the screen behind.
Instead, we'll enter its world through sound design, soundscapes and soundtrack — listening to the records on a specially curated hi-fi system built around vintage Tannoy Berkeley loudspeakers and pure Class A Luxman amplification.

No projected images telling you what to see.

Just sound creating space, movement, atmosphere and memory — and the strange moment when your own mind begins supplying the pictures.

It's part film experience, part deep-listening session, part pop-up jazz kissa.

And perhaps an experiment:
Will everyone in the room see the same film?

Only a few places remain and we'd love to make this another full room.

Sunday 30th August marks another first for The Audiophile Cafe Club.

Join us at Teatru Salesjan Cafe Bar to experience what we see when we listen.

A film experienced through its soundscapes and soundtrack over a carefully curated hi-fi system, in a pop-up jazz kissa-style setting.

Arrive, settle in, order a drink, and ease into the room.

The session will begin with a short introduction to the format, the music and the playback system, before the soundtrack is played with intention.

Not background music.

A shared act of attention.

Savoured individually. Shared communally.

Written and performed for the experimental film festival Għeuff at Valletta Contemporary [curated by @_julianmicallef ], which took place on June 11th ’26, ILL-STRINA is a dual-loop performance inspired by a social media video of the 2026 fireworks factory explosion in Salina, Malta. The audio was transferred onto reel-to-reel tape and manipulated live using sound-on-sound and delay techniques. The original blast is multiplied, transforming it from a singular moment into an ongoing cycle of action and reaction. Presented alongside a hand-processed 16mm film loop of iconic, cinematic, and explicit images, the work suspends sound and image in a state of immanence, where intensity, repetition, and transformation continually unfold. by @peter__sant
